Aldo Costa

Aldo CostaBorn in Parma, Aldo Costa studied mechanical engineering at Bologna University. He wrote a brilliant thesis on Formula 1 suspension systems, gleening the information from the Ferrari racing department, and after graduation in 1986 he joined the Abarth company where he worked with CAD/CAM and in the calculation department for 18 months.

In 1988 Aldo joined F1 team Minardi where he went on to become the chief designer at just 27 years of age. Aldo stayed at Minardi in charge of all technical aspects until in 1995 when he left to join Ferrari.

Betwen 1996 and 2003 Aldo was Head of the Design Office at Maranello and assistant to Rory Byrne. When Rory Byrne announced his official retirement as Chief Designer in 2004, Aldo became Chief Designer with Rory acting as a consultant and Aldo was responsible for the design and build of Ferrari’s 2005 F1 racing car.

Before the 2006 season began Aldo was promoted to become the Head of Design and Development, as Ferrari announced Nicholas Tombazis as their new Chief Designer. At the end of 2006 with the departure of several key technical staff, Ferrari reorganised their Management and Technical Staff structure and Aldo became the Head of the Chassis Department.

After a successful 2007 campaign which saw both the Constructors and Drivers Titles return to Maranello, Ferrari carried out another reshuffle of their technical and management organisational structure in which Aldo was promoted to the role of Technical Director taking over from the current encumbant Mario Almondo.
