Food Behind The Success

When the Ferrari team travel the world to all the Grand Prix's in a season, they have to be fed and the man behind the cooking at Ferrari is Carlo Casoni. Together with Massimo Battaglini they have the responsibility to feed the entire Ferrari team, this includes Jean Todt to the youngest team mechanic.

"We feed around 80 people at each meal," says Casoni, "and serve a total of 720 meals per Grand Prix, but our job doesn't finish there. We also have to set the kitchen up and then dismantle everything at the end of the weekend."

Do they work long hours to prepare the meals?

"Our working hours are very long - just like the rest of the team. We are usually in the kitchen 15 hours a day - sometimes even 20!"

What dishes do you normally prepare?

"I can choose the menu, but we normally go for traditional Italian cooking, especially typical dishes from around Modena and Emilia Romagna. These recipes are quite high in fat - there's little or no scope for special diets here, because the mechanics need proteins."

Do the drivers have special diets at tracks?

"Michael eats a lot of boiled vegetables with either dressing, basil sauce or meat extract. His favourite pasta is fusilli which he usually has either 'in bianco' - without sauce - or with tomato sauce. He always has a rocket salad with Parmesan cheese with meals, followed by a large fruit salad. Michael's breakfast is rich in fibres - cereals, corn flakes and muesli with fresh milk.

Rubens goes for a slightly more varied menu. He likes pasta with pesto sauce, prawns, fresh tomatoes or a vegetable sauce. He's another fan of salads and fruit, too. For breakfast we always make sure he's got a wide selection of cereals, toast and low-fat, high-protein jam to choose from."

And the team?

"On race days we always serve breakfast in the morning as usual, while lunch is served after the race. Just before the race there are sandwiches and fresh milk available for snacks."

What's the best part of a race weekend?

"There's no two ways about it - celebrating a win. Rushing to the pit wall to applaud our drivers is the best thing about Formula 1!"
