View Full Version : Guide to visiting Maranello

OK, so following a chat in the Ferrari Dreams thread I thought I would set this thread up for anyone with experieces of visiting Maranello to post and for those wishing to visit to perhaps post questions.

I have been a number of times with my first visit being in 1995 and my most recent a couple of years ago.

First the map I made. I believe this has been put elsewhere in the forum but I figured it made sense to have it here as well. Below is text explaining what you should find at the letters on the map.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/suffolkben/Maranello/maranello_1.gif

The letters on the map correspond to the following.

a. Galleria Ferrari. There is quite a bit of parking outside the Galleria but if not you can pull up on the road in various places along the road Via D Ferrari that the Galleria is on. It’s not a huge museum but you do get up close to a good number of Ferrari road and racecars from various decades. Plus you can see engines, sometimes prototypes etc. They change the display from time to time so you never know what you will see exactly. There is also a café inside. It’s open at 9.30 until 6 although I think that’s extended to 7 in the summer months.

b. Formula 1 factory. Again it’s not a massive impressive building but it’s worth a look. Often on the right as you get to the factory entrance you will see the Ferrari transporters that are used to take the cars and equipment to the races in Europe. They are very impressive and you can just about see through and over the fences. No one seems to mind anyone taking a look or taking pictures.

c. Main gates for the Fiorano test track. You can’t really see any of the track from here buts its worth hanging around for a while as new cars and prototypes are driven round to hear, often on the back of a truck so they can be tested on the track. Not F1 cars though. These are built in a different factory and have direct access to the track. See b on the map.

d. Original Ferrari Factory entrance. This is the entrance to the factory and it is still very much used today. Not much to look at but as it’s the original building’s it’s a major part of the history. All the factory workers still use this entrance and I believe if you turn up to collect your new Ferrari, this is where you go in and out. (One day I wish!!!)

e. Cavallino Restaurant. The famous place that anyone that is in anyway connected to Ferrari has eaten in (plus myself!). Not cheap but its great if you get a chance. All the plates, glasses etc have the Ferrari logo’s on and the memorabilia on the wall is an incredible collection.

f. Modern road car factory. This is the massive and impressive buildings that road cars are built in. It’s not that old. Another good place to hand around and spot cars going out for test drives, especially ones covered is disguise. Get the camera ready! Also, just to the left of the entrance is the wind tunnel. This is massive. You simply cannot miss it. It’s well worth a look. You can’t get that close but it’s a very impressive building.

g. This is a good spot to watch cars going round the Fiorano test track. You can stand and watch through a mesh fence but there are normally barrels or rubbish bins left around which you can use for getting up higher and looking over the top. You only see a small section of the track but is a good place as the cars approach at speed and have to brake very hard, they then go round a fairly tight left hander and the accelerate hard out of the corner often getting the back end out if they are road cars.

h. This is the small monument to Gilles Villenerve. Its not very impressive buts it’s significant for all Tifosi for obvious reasons. It’s actually placed in a hedge which is carefully cut around it. However this means a lot of people miss it.

i. Red Café. A great place to eat either indoors or outdoors in the Piazza.

j. Across the Piazza just near the entrance to the Hotel Domus is the Enzo Ferrari Statue. A rather impressive thing, if a little odd!

k. This in a place on the main road in to Maranello from Modena. There is a flyover which runs along the northern edge of the Fiorano Test track. From this bit or road you can get a view of the circuit and with binoculars you can see the garage where they were on the cars whilst testing.

Finally, a few pics from round and about Maranello.

There are some nice parks which we spent time in. Good for children to play and relaxing in general.

Wonder if I will ever get to go again?

I do too (actually have way more family there than here), but the exchange rate is just so awful, that it's not do-able.:-(

As a curiosity, now you [yes,YOU the reader ;-)] can drive a Ferrari 430,at Maranello and outskirts for 20 minutes time. You only need a driving license, and cash in an amount of 160 euros, plus another 20 if you want to be videotaped [highly recommended when talking to friends :lol].Of course,a "driving instructor" goes with you, just in case :-P

Ant Raikkonen

Red5: thanks for posting those pictures :love :love
Driving the 430 & getting it videoed would be an absolute must (i would pay 160 euro's without hesitation).
In the last few years i hoped to get a drive in a Ferrari road car as a birthday present....it hasn't happened yet...... I would do it anywhere, Thruxton/Mallory do it if i remember right, ideally Silvestone would be fantastic but Fiorano would be the ultimate :-E:-E

I haven't given up hope yet ;-)

Thanks Ant Raikkonen, will be more pics to come ;-).

As for driving the Ferrari...errr...I didn't do that [yes,I'm quite contradictory].Driving scares me to death, let alone driving a supercar with 500 hp.I offered to pay the testdrive to my girlfriend, but she too refused because of safety reasons.Anyway she has regretted it,and won't do that again :-).To know how is it like, check this web site http://www.warmup.it/shop/home.php

Agree with you with the price, almost a bargain when you realize, here in Spain, something alike can easily double or treble the money.

You should go to Maranello and Modena, there are lots of things to see [cars included],people is friendly and the food is magnificent!!!

Maranello - for each real Ferrarista Mecca in the world. Ferrari Ferrari factory and the home is located about 20 km south of Modena, the famous Italian region Emilia Arroyo Manie 170 km southeast of Milan old city. Maranello - Italy's secret funds - is important in the region, small towns are signs from the exit "Modena North " from the right A1 motorway Milan Bologna

If your in Europe try to book a flight to Bologna airport with Ryanair, rent a car and drive around 45 min to Maranello.
In Maranello you can book a hotel, cheap hotels ar not hard to find, the rest is up to you what to do.
I did it about 3x times last year and to be true it's a steal just going over there, i put up around €75.- 2 way flight and car rental was also a joke for 4 days around €64.- mileage free. (i left from Dusseldorf weeze airport to Bologna airport)
The first pic is standing from the appartment i was staying at from my friend in Maranello, the second pic is from inside the factory showing the appartment from the otherside :-)

Or you could drive a few hours north and be at Monza itself!!!!!

Well folks just before the Monza GP i visited my friends in Maranello.
The weather was very hot (around 30 celsius and above!) and because i do have very good friends overthere i got a nice present, an red Ferrari shield wich is normaly on the engine, not bad!
Also got a nice bag with a shirt, cap and factory shoes from the "sportiva" division.
It says on the cap and shirt "corso avanzato" wich means advanced driving course.

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7411/dsc00924wh.jpg

Next year im going again because then Ferrari has it's "familia" day, a event every 2 years for every Ferrari factory worker and his family, everything is on display and you can also visit the F1 factory, like i did last year.

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2008/p1010068x.jpg
Me taking a rest in Ferrari's motorhome on the couch last year, behind me is Fiorano the testtrack of Ferrari.

I even got offerd the exhausts from Alonso's F1 car that he used 4 races ago! i can't put the pics on the net but believe me they weigh absolutly nothing, you can easly lift them with 2 fingers!

If annyone visit's Maranello from this forum be sure to take a testdrive with PitLane (check them on FB) they have 1x 430 1x 430 spider,3x California a 458 and a 599 and a 550 Maranello, and you can all drive them if you'd like, just mention my name (Ruud King) and get 10% of the price!
Some pic's of the place from my italian friends!

I love Maranello so much! The first time I visited was back in 2004. I was just starting University and one of my first acts as an adult was to head to the home of Ferrari! It was one of the most emotional days of my life because I had spent my entire childhood fantasizing about it and wondering if I'd ever get the chance to see it. When I was a girl I made a kind of action plan in one of my diaries. I called it "The Road to Maranello" I had researched this elaborate route to Maranello, complete with little drawings and maps! lol! It was so satisfying to follow it through ten years later. To this day I still prefer this route. I take the train to Modena and then walk to the bus station and catch the next bus to Maranello! The most amazing thing about Maranello is that everything was just as I had imagined it to be. In my opinion the best time to go would be on a weekday when the team is working, but they are still about on weekends too! (stay home during a GP weekend!) The Galleria is very cool, but my favourite thing is the atmosphere. There is this bush (hahaha! This sounds so random) that you can go into and get a great view of the Fiorano track! (There are several bushes, but I'm not going to tell you where mine is...find your own viewing bush! LOL! :lol) There is also a nice vantage point further down the Via Gilles Villeneuve near the Ferrari Club of Maranello but I find that alot of people park their cars and campers up close to it and stand on their roofs so unless you make friends with one of them it can be hard to get a good view of any track action!

Just in case you are wondering, I now visit Maranello almost every month! I followed my Ferrari passion and moved nearby earlier this year and yes...I am in heaven! :love Also to all of the people who have contacts and managed to get a factory tour...hook me up! ;-)

I went to Maranello last weekend with my wife. Dream come true, at last. It is best place for us, Ferrari fans in the world. Out there everything is about our team, our family. Everything. Will post some pics tonight, I am at work right now. Not that I wanted to see 458 Italia, and I did, the best thing was, I cant believe even today, I drove it. At Maranello, by the factory, restoran, shop, galeria, and at full speed, not cars, rather mine, :) outside of a town. Here is the short video.

You have to go to Maranello. I have been there in 2009 and its just Fantastic! Everything is about Ferrari in the whole village! Don't go to Lambo factory, these cars are so ugly and look like spaceships.

Just picked up this thread, great pics and happy memories as I did it in 2011, flew Rynair to Pisa from Bournemouth UK, hired a Fiat 500 TwinAir and drove over mountains via Abetone to Maranello, stayed at Maranello Village Hotel, quite a way from Factory but good rates and nice themed hotel. Good meal opposite Enzo's statue in town square, next time will have to book factory visit too, trouble is I can't afford a Ferrari unless it's 1:43 scale!!
Easy to do from Bologna/Firenze/Pisa if you hire a car. BTW 500 TwinAir was a blast up the hills!! Excellent thread so thanks for the memories.

Ciao fratello, not sure about details or requirements for a factory visit, but there must be someone on TSN who knows how to do it, I have a feeling you may have to show that you can afford to buy one, though! So it will likely have to remain un sogno for me!! My Fiat 500 is the nearest I'm going to get, but it does have a Ferrari shield and a tricolore stripe on it! Salute.:xmascool:

I've got a Felipe Massa hat which lives in my kitchen, I'm not allowed out wearing it as I look a little stupid!! Oh and a Ferrari bear on top of the dashboard. A bit sad, really, but I'm proud of it!:xmasconfused:

We Tifosi all have to be a bit crazy, it's the passion and devotion to our team that brings the craziness out in us, I don't believe any other team creates the same loyalty and emotion, long may it last!:lol

You have a real problem if you only have one evening. I'd suggest eating 4 meals:-
Montana
Drake
Il Cavallino
Ristorante Domus (also ok to stay at the hotel here - Hotel Domus)
Maranello Cafe (for drinks or coffee later)

If you get there in time, do the drive a Ferrari thing. Lots of fun thumping it round the Maranello countryside.

When I was there in 2009 I didn't have my driving license yet (17 years old then) so maybe I will do a drive in a Ferrari but I have to say it was really expensive 5 years ago already so I don't think that has changed during the years :lol I will probably gonna eat at Il Cavallino then and Maranello Cafe is a good advice didn't know about that but could be nice! I will sleep in Maranello for one night but probably at the Planet Hotel because I have heard good stories about that hotel.

The drive is less than 150 in the California, they advertised its for 20 minutes but I was driving for more than half an hour and had 2 passengers (a small charge for each). Let me tell you it is great value cause they let you fang it as long as the coast is clear.

Planet hotel is great cause you can walk everywhere (except Montana). The shops there too. You get to see nuova sede Scuderia Ferrari from there as well. Enjoy! :thumb

Thanks for the advice! I will take into consideration the drive with the California! I have driven with a 360 Modena once but that's an old model already now! But Iam still a student so 150 euros is not less for me :-s

Hello F1NAC! Sorry Iam not from Croatia but I have been to Maranello last year! If you got time why not drive over ways without toll? You will see more of the Italian landscapes which I can really recommend :-D

It is possible I think to drive around in a Ferrari car at Fiorano but to be honest I don't know which company it offers! But the prices are ridiculously high...

Just came back from a trip to toscane.

On one day we changed the programme and we went to yes... MARANELLO!!!

I knew that the 488 Spider was waiting for me and I went in drove around the mountains for a little less then 1 hour but I thought YOLO! Also I went in the Ferrari FF, I just wanted to feel the V12 and Ferrari's first 4WD system.
Afterwards I concluded the 488 was more my kinda car :-D. You just can feel the mid-engined fun factor in that car that you never experience anywhere but in karts.

I got there a nice experience for back, the memories(USB-stick with HD Video), the ear porn from the exhaust, It was a long time ago that the hair on the back of my neck went straight up, but it definitely happened then!

Afterwards we went to the Museum and I bought myself some new Ray Ban Ferrari sunglasses.

Well I am lucky in light of the way that I have family in Italy. Aunt and Uncle in Rome and my kin right currently lives in Cremona which isn't that long a drive from Maranello.

Ciao Tifoso,

I have been to Maranello on 6 occasions so if you got any questions be my guest! If you got the time and the money I would do this! Begin your Maranello trip by a lunch at either Il Cavallino or Montana! Then visit the museum!

Tip: book a Ferrari Factory Bus Tour! You are not allowed to leave the bus or take photos on route, but it will still bring you inside the factory! They do a tour around the factory like the paintshop wind tunnel e.d. They also bring you to Fiorano where you can see Enzo Ferrari’s old house in the distance!

After that go to Modena for Museo Enzo Ferrari! There are less cars than in Maranello but the story of Enzo is told very beautiful! It’s also located in the house where Enzo grew up in his childhood! The architecture of the building is splendid!

When you are finished in Modena drive back and eat at Il Cavallino/Montana! In that way you are able to visit both restaurants! If you want to see the most memorabilia than Montana is the better choice! With lots of helmets and overalls from Michael Schumacher, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Niki Lauda and even Jules Bianchi

Hope you can something with my advice and dont’t forget: Forza Ferrari per sempre :ferrarifl

P.S. If you got any more questions don’t hestitate to send me a personal message!

fratelliferrari

Ciao Tifoso,

Well actually it depends! If you like pasta better, you should go to Montana! If you like steaks and fancy food Il Cavallino is the choice!
