Ste
25th June 2010, 08:06
Ted says the exhaust/blown diffuser is very much a "Mark 1 version", so he says Alonso is right to downplay it. He says they'll be developing it more throughout the following European races.

They should introduce a rule that states the cars must be out of their garages quickly, lapping.

MotoGP is great for that, everyone out, 99% of the time, whereas F1 just stay in the garage.

I know there's not much data to be collected when the track is poor but they keep adding rules like a movable rear wing that cheats the driver infront of his position, to improve overtaking and therefore the spectacle. Yet, they don't introduce something to get the cars on track more.

Grinsomx
25th June 2010, 08:27
yea, fully agree. we need a rule that demands them to go out quickly

There should be a Friday maintenance team running old cars with ground effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2001_Goodwood_Festival_of_Speed_Brabham_BT46B _Fan_car.jpg) to clean the track :lol

would be so sweet to see ferrari make into the top 3 today or barely getting P1 on heavy runs just to see us blow away everyone when we get to qualify.....might not happen, but a man can dream :-)

Ste
25th June 2010, 08:33
Ted saying Renault have also brought the floor exhaust and blown diffuser this weekend. He reckons they've done an incredible job with it, looks as though it's been there since the beginning. New Front Wing as well.

Don't think he ever said anything revolutionary, Alonso denied it was the major upgrade everyone is expecting, although he still expects a big gain.

He said Renault's new exhaust system is far more advanced, almost as though it's been there since the release of their car.

I'd say we've done pretty well to get this new system in place, as well as other upgrades.

We never go out in FP1 and FP2 to be in P1. We aren't McLaren, we're sensible. Better to practice race stints and test out new parts properly than to please the Media and be P1.

We use FP3 to practice our qualifying pace, once the car has a good balance.

European GP - Objectives achieved

Valencia, 25 June – The European Grand Prix is the ninth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, the race taking place this Sunday on the Valencia street circuit based on roads around the city’s port. The event got underway this morning with the first free practice session, on a track that is still very dirty. Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes was fastest in 1.41.175, followed by the McLarens of Lewis Hamilton (1.41.339) and Jenson Button (1.41.383.)

Best placed of the two Ferrari drivers was Felipe Massa, fifth in 1.42.182, having completed 21 laps, while team-mate Fernando Alonso finished ninth, running 22 laps, the best in a time of 1.42.421. The team achieved its objectives, with its main priority this morning being an evaluation of the new parts fitted to both cars, including low level exhaust systems and aero updates.

The second free practice session gets underway at 14.00.

I like this approach. In FP1 we do a little testing of the new parts and evaluate their effects. Then finetuning the car a little between FP1 and 2 and try again in FP2.
Then finetune a little more between FP2 and 3 and finally use P3 to see the endresult - without giving away too much info about the real potential of the car to the other teams.
By then Ferrari will know exactly how to approach qualifying and already can start to think about a few different tactics and scenarios for the race.

They don't look that quick to me. We haven't been out of the garage for 15 minutes or so, track will have rubbered in a fair bit since then. And again, Alonso's times were set on a 5 lap stint, both of the Red Bulls didn't do that many laps - and also didn't have traffic.

From the times we’ve done so far, i think the updates are working really good (especially for Alonso; Massa’s engineers need to tweak his car a little bit more) and i think we’re going to give the Bulls and Mc Cheaters a run for their money this weekend, IF we keep up the pace that we’ve had so far, especially if we tweak the car’s balance a little more to get the best out of the package that seems to be working VERY good right from the start.

I’m very optomistic, and i can’t hardly wait for quali tomorrow

Looking good. Only the 0,664 between the cars is way too much but we must hold into consideration Felipe lost almost half an hour of practice.

We can sure about one thing though: Fernando REALLY wants this one in front of his home crowd.........so expect him to go as deep as he possibly can.

Quote from newssite:

"Less competitive was Felipe Massa, who was 0.664 off the pace of his team-mate after a spin 30 minutes into the session. He stalled the car and had to walk back to the pit, but still managed to get out for the final 30 minutes in order to get some crucial running on the softer tyre."

I thought the ECU had anti-stall equiped? I mean doesn't this work then or what?

Did mccheats turn it of by remote...:-!

It is clear there was good reason for the positive vibes coming from the team since Canada. This upgrade is clearly very good - and remember they have only had a few laps to fine tune it. I really hope they are holding back on further enhancements, as has been implied. It's one thing to have a fast, but there are lots of variables, some we control, some we don't. But, for sure, we are in the hunt with a very competitive car. Things go well and it could be our first 1-2 :-)
I wish I had talent and time to spend on photo-shop - I think the F10, without the fishy-appendage, would be a stunningly good looking car.

Missed FP2 and cautiously entered the forum to see what has transpired. Delighted to see Alonso topping the sheets. :rock
I know its only practice, but i think its looking good. Massa needs to up his game a bit. Wonder why hes gone off the boil. Hopefully both our cars will do well in the quali tomorrow. :-)

Thanks F60, I meant for the B spec (perhaps a few too many San Mig Lites) :-)
In any case I'd love a 1-2 and I think it might be possible - with a little luck

Only Luca di Grassi on track right now. Teams are obviously keen to preserve the set of medium compound tyres allocated to each driver for this session, hoping for others to clean the track a little before heading out.

36 min: Rosberg moves up to third as the fun continues. The Mercedes driver posts 1m38.911s - now fourth following Alonso's improvement.

36 min: Alonso pushes hard through the second part of the lap and flashes over the line just 14 thousandths quicker than Vettel to top the times.

36 min: And suddenly Mark Webber joins him up front. The Australian goes second with 1m38.802s.

35 min: Alonso is quickest through the first sector as he continues a run on the medium compound rubber.

40 min: So Alonso leads the pack with a top time of 1m38.513s, with Webber second, Vettel in the pits and third, Rosberg fourth and Massa fifth.

40 min: Alonso is really finding time as the laps continue. A quick middle sector puts the Spaniard two tenths clear in 1m38.513s.

39 min: Massa finds some time on his run with the harder tyre to go fifth in 1m38.981s.

26th June 2010, 09:45
44 min: Webber, Schumacher and Vettel are in the garage currently, but on track we have Rosberg and Sutil.

44 min: Button improves to eighth, while the man on the move is Robert Kubica, springing up to second with a typical attacking lap from the Pole.

43 min: Replays pick up Massa having another moment at Turn 5, where he had a costly spin yesterday.

I think Massa needs to put his Weight distribution forwards a bit, major snap-oversteer under braking.

vcs316
26th June 2010, 09:58
58 min: Kubica crosses the line to grab the benchmark time for Renault in 1m38.154s.

57 min: The man to watch now is Kubica, who is rapid through the middle sector.

57 min: Massa has finally found a little bit of pace on the softer tyres and is up to fifth.

57 min: Webber rises to the challenge and takes over at the head of the field with 1m38.313s and suddenly it's Red Bull one and two again.

Lots more time left in Alonso, up after S2, but lost a fair bit in S3. Kubica really on it, but i would think he's slightly lighter than the others.

We're good for Pole today I think. :-)

Track has ramped up in the last few moments, everyone going quicker, Sutil in P4.

Vettel just went P1 on a 1.38.052.

Will be mid to low 37's in Qualifying I imagine.

vcs316
26th June 2010, 09:59
58 min: Sutil slots in fourth behind Kubica, Webber and Vettel with a 1m38.500s lap.

58 min: Adrian Sutil is also flying in the Force India. He even beats Kubica's middle sector time, but he can't carry the pace through to the end of the lap.

10:05 Long-time leader Alonso ended up fifth, with Barrichello sixth, Liuzzi seventh giving Force India a positive result. Massa was eighth.
