Weather forecast for the weekend

Forecast Summary:

(PPN = Precipitation)

Emphasis: Wet running expected at times, Fri-Sat. Wettest conditions will be Thursday PM. Showers expected Friday, becoming frequent & heavier later; also further patchy spells of rain / showers on Saturday to give damp conditions at times. The race is expected to be dry or largely so with a small chance of afternoon showers.

Friday: Variable cloud cover, with showers at times, becoming more frequent, heavier and possibly thundery into the afternoon, evening and overnight. Best chance of dry running is for FP1. Chance of PPN 80%. Max 24C. Wind light WNW.

Saturday: Variable (and at times rather extensive) cloud cover, with showers or spells of intermittent light rain likely at times albeit less prospect of extensively wet conditions compared to Friday. Chance of PPN 50%. Max 23C. Wind light NW.

Sunday: Variable cloud cover, with some sunny spells and convective cloud building during the afternoon. Low chance of afternoon showers, but on balance dry conditions are expected for the race. Chance of PPN 30%. Max 23C. Wind light NNW.

Felipe Massa has a wild spin in his Ferrari after clipping the painted kerb at Turn 3. The Brazilian resumes without damage.

Massa has a huge 360 degree spin coming out of turn three. He stamped on the throttle coming onto the straight and the car stepped out on him very violently. No damage to the car but a little reminder of how tricky the conditions are at the moment.

BBC commentator Jonathan Legard: "Red Bull's relentless rate of development continues in Germany. There was yet another run of cardboard boxes through the paddock last night with the team's mechanics wheeling through a new floor and other new parts for the opening practice sessions. More bits are expected to arrive ahead of qualifying and the race. I only saw one new floor arrive and so the question is which car will be fitted with it in the light of the row over the front wing at Silverstone?"

Looks like they might make a change to his rear suspension before sending him back out on the intermediates. 1007: It's been a tricky morning for McLaren, and it's just got a lot worse. Hamilton loses the back end coming out of Turn Three, he catches it, but the car then snaps back and he ventures across the grass and into the tyre wall. There's lot of damage to the back of that McLaren. It's going to be a busy time in the garage as the team try to rebuild it. As a hacked-off Hamilton sits in his car after that crash he says: "The car's in the wall, and is damaged. Heavily." Says it all really. In other news, Sutil improves to a 1:27.846.

German GP - A rainy start

Hockenheim, 23 July – The first free practice session for the eleventh round of the Formula 1 World Championship, the German Grand Prix, has just ended under cloudy skies, having started in the rain, at the Hockenheim circuit. The rain eased off towards the second half and, come the end, Felipe Massa was second for Ferrari in 1.26.850, behind the Force India of Adrian Sutil (1.25.701) and ahead of Jenson Button in the McLaren (1.26.936.)

Fernando Alonso set the nineteenth time, (1.29.684) having completed just fifteen laps in the other F10, opting to save his tyres for the afternoon, confident that the track conditions will be more settled. Both Ferrari men started on full wets, before switching to intermediates halfway through and then trying some practice starts at the end.

Heikki Kovalainen and Karun Chandhok did not take part, with Lotus’s Finn replaced by Malaysian test driver Fairuz Fauzy, while the Indian Force India driver was substituted by Japan’s Sakon Yamamoto.

The second free practice session gets underway at 14.00 this afternoon.

Second practice is just over 15 minutes away and it looks as though we are going to get our first dry running of the day.

To the south west of Hockenheim, a large area of rain is moving in and we may again see wet running during the second half of the 90-minute session.

A wet morning of practice meant most drivers used a set of both the full wet and intermediate rubber and the teams will be very keen to conserve tyres if rain continues to fall this afternoon.

With just four sets of intermediates and three sets of full wets available to each driver, no race engineer will want to end up short of rubber if the inclement weather continues through qualifying tomorrow, when fresh tyres could provide a vital advantage.

Nope. Especially not in this session. IF we try it, we won't see it's effect until Qualifying 3. It damages the engine and it's not worth using until that point. That's why Red Bull seem to take such a large step forward in that session because they don't use it at any other point. :-)

Red Bull duo wary of Ferrari's form

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Friday, July 23rd 2010, 14:09 GMT

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, German GPRed Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel believe Ferrari is set for a very strong German Grand Prix this weekend.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso set the pace in the second practice session on Friday, outpacing Vettel by less than 0.030.

Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa completed a positive day for the Italian squad after setting the third fastest time.

"Ferrari looks extremely competitive and I think McLaren probably had a difficult day today with only one car for the majority of the training so we will see tomorrow," said Vettel after managing 26 laps in the afternoon session.

Webber was fourth quickest and the Australian also reckons Ferrari is competitive.

"The car felt pretty good. We have some work to do tonight. Ferrari look strong, so we have some competition this weekend and are looking forward to the race," said Webber.

Vettel admitted, however, that the changing weather conditions made it hard to judge the times from today's sessions.

"It was slippery today obviously," he said. "The conditions were changing all the time, so to really judge the lap times is quite difficult because you have to see when everyone was out on the circuit and in which conditions. But it was important to get some dry running in the afternoon I think and it looked quite promising.

"The car feels nice, especially in the last section, so all in all it is a good day. Ferrari looked very quick and McLaren had a difficult day in the office, with only one car for a majority of the running, but I am sure they will be back up there tomorrow. It is tight."

Felipes steering inputs were calm and controlled while not sure MS or rosberg, was having to make a lot of adjustments to keep the car on the curves. Loved it.
We do have the speed, but i feel the bulls might have some more in reserve. Nando is right, we will need to be extraordinary to snatch pole from them.. but its possible i guess. And our car seems to be steadily improving. Am so happy.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Hockenheim: "The German Grand Prix's return to Hockenheim after the race was hosted by the Nurburgring last year seems to have put everyone in a relaxed mood. Half an hour before third practice, Robert Kubica was chatting amiably to a man with a large cigar outside Renault, Red Bull boss Christian Horner was signing caps and Virgin's Timo Glock was doing a live interview with German television. The exception to all this serenity was McLaren, where there was some frenzied vacuuming on the doorstep of their motorhome. Former team boss Ron Dennis was renowned for wanting every speck of dust removed but it's a bit of an uphill task for those responsible for maintaining that image in the wet, mud-streaked conditions here. There goes Felipe, nearly half a second quicker than Vettel, straight into P1 on his first lap.

Nice. :-)

Our car looks much more stable compared to what I have seen in Valencia.

Alonso is still out on track but is about 2.350 off the pace - possibly due to running a heavier fuel load.

Ferrari team-mate Massa goes fastest with a 1:24.542 on intermediate tyres.

It is no longer raining but the track is still damp, especially at Turn 6

Massa springs to the top of the times with a 1m24.017s but is told by Rob Smedley to back off as he is supposed to be scrubbing the tyres.

"What do you mean by "scrub" a set of wet tyres for Quali?"

It basically means put a single lap on that set of tyres. When the tyres are brand new they have a sheen on top and oils within them that actually makes it more slippery. Once that sheen is broken and the tyres have some heat put through them - by a single lap - they actually offer more grip.

BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard: "The mixed conditions in practice on Friday make performance difficult to read, but the feeling among the engineers ahead of final practice is that the Red Bull, which has some new aerodynamic tweaks, is where it always is, ie the car to beat, and that their closest rivals this weekend, as was the case in Silverstone, are Ferrari rather than McLaren. Mercedes are hoping for an improved performance thanks to some new parts - a new floor, rear wing and other aerodynamic parts but Michael Schumacher is struggling to adapt to the handling characteristics of the new rear wing."

McLaren will be running their rear blown diffuser upgrade for the rest of this weekend by the way. They abandoned it after Friday practice at Silverstone two weeks ago. Jenson Button said yesterday that he was worried by the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull this weekend. He said: "The Red Bulls and Ferrari look fast, faster than we expected. I don't know if we'll be as quick." On the track, Felipe Massa goes quickest with a 1:24.017 and is then told by his race engineer Rob Smedley that he is only supposed to be scrubbing the front tyres. Brilliant.

Webber is now fastest on hard dry tyres with a 1:20.360. But we are still four seconds off Alonso's time of yesterday.
