Audi on front row at Silverstone

Allan McNish clinches P2 on the grid at his “home round”
Rain shower prevents faster lap times
Audi drivers optimistic for race on Sunday

The two Audi R18 TDI cars from Audi Sport Team Joest will start into the 6-hour race at Silverstone (Great Britain) on Sunday at 11:35 a.m., local time ( 12:35 CEST) from the two front rows of the grid.

Rain showers made conditions in qualifying on Saturday afternoon difficult. Drizzling rain had already set in before the beginning of the 20-minute session. But when the two Audi drivers, Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard, were on what were their fastest laps up to that time, they encountered heavier rain in the last track sector so that they were unable to improve their times any more.

Due to the location of the team at the beginning of the pit lane the two Audi R18 TDI cars were not able to start their chase for times right at the beginning of the qualifying session. That proved to be crucial. After a strong first flying lap McNish was on course for setting the best time on his second lap before encountering rain in the last chicane before the start and finish. Consequently, neither the Scotsman nor his team-mate Timo Bernhard, who had to overtake several slower cars on the first two laps, was able to improve.

The squad around Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich looks toward to the fifth round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) with confidence nonetheless as all four Audi drivers commented positively about the handling of their Audi R18 TDI right from the beginning at Silverstone and are sure that the true potential of the Le Mans winning car will be shown in the race.

Audi.tv will air full-length live coverage of the 6-hour race on Sunday on the internet at http://microsites.audi.com/lemans/. Allan McNish is contesting the Silverstone race together with Tom Kristensen, Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fässler.

Quotes after qualifying

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport): “Today we didn’t have much time in free practice because two red flag periods considerably shortened the practice session. But we’d already done a good job on Friday and worked out a good set-up for both cars. We were actually quite optimistic for qualifying. Due to the weather and pit lane situation we weren’t able to be among the first to go out on the track and that was crucial today. We waited until the first cars were gone. Unfortunately, the rain was getting heavier on our fast laps. That didn’t allow us fully use the potential.”

Tom Kristensen (Audi R18 TDI #2): “It’s great to be back in the UK, particularly at Silverstone and its fantastic race track. Yesterday and today the weather has been very changeable and that will continue to be the case tomorrow. We need to closely watch the weather forecasts with respect to the set-up of our cars. We tried out various options in the past two days. It looks like there may be more rain tomorrow – and I’m hoping for us to be perfectly prepared for it. Allan (McNish) did a good job in qualifying. Now we’re exactly between the two Peugeot on the grid. That could mean that we’re in for a thrilling 6-hour race tomorrow.”

Allan McNish (Audi R18 TDI #2): “Qualifying went well with respect to the car’s performance capability and the feeling for it. Naturally it was a bit frustrating that the weather didn’t cooperate. But that was the same for everyone in the field. The first fast lap was relatively free, on the second one there was heavy rain in Stowes Corner and in the last turn. Without that, more would have been possible. I’m going into the race tomorrow with a positive feeling.”

Marcel Fässler (Audi R18 TDI #1): “We’ve been able to reel off our program in the practice sessions so far, tried out set-ups for the race and are basically very happy with the car. I’m actually convinced that we’ll be running well in the race tomorrow. I had a good feeling right from the start, the car has superb balance. That’s why I’m looking forward to tomorrow even though we were a bit unfortunate with the weather in qualifying today. But the grid positions aren’t so crucial at a 6-hour race.”

Timo Bernhard (Audi R18 TDI #1): “That was a difficult qualifying session. Just before the start, rain set in. On both of the two timed laps when the track offered the highest grip level I had to overtake two or three cars. At the end of my third flying lap the rain was really pouring down. It wasn’t possible to improve any more. So we were a bit unfortunate. But I think we can make up for that in the race – because our performance is right.”

Ralf Jüttner (Technical Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “A lottery! The rain started right in time for qualifying. We had the option to use several sets of tires but just getting one set up to heat was difficult enough. Maybe we went out a tiny bit too late so that the track was already too moist. We went out one minute after the session had started – that was the minute that was lacking in the end. Allan McNish caught a good lap while Timo Bernhard was a bit unfortunate with traffic. He didn’t hit the narrow window in which fast laps were possible. But all in all we don’t have a bad starting base on the two front rows, particularly as the drivers are very pleased with the set-up of their cars.”

Simon Pagenaud puts Peugeot on pole for AUTOSPORT 6 Hours of Silverstone
By Sam Tremayne Saturday, September 10th 2011, 13:36 GMT

Simon Pagenaud earned Peugeot pole position for the AUTOSPORT 6 Hours of Silverstone in tricky qualifying conditions.

Spots of rain threatened at the start of the session, prompting the LMP field to attack from the outset. Pagenaud and Sarrazin traded times in the #7 and #8 Peugeots, before the former pulled clear with a 1m43.943s effort.

Allan McNish was the first to reply in the #2 Audi R18, moving to within nine tenths of Pagenaud and then setting the overall fastest sector two time on his next tour, only to then meet traffic in the final third of the lap.

Rain then fell and effectively looked like bringing the session to a premature close - with Peugeot calling both drivers in and hesitantly beginning celebrations.

McNish opted to stay out for one more lap, and as the rain began to ease looked well poised. The session had been declared wet meaning tyre choices were free, and with Peugeot's charges halted Audi strapped fresh rubber to McNish's car and weighed up a final push.

The decision was taken away from them as the time ticked down however, although several cars did go out and made substantial gains.

Nicolas Prost in the #12 Rebellion was one of the beneficiaries, rising to fifth overall - behind the #8 Peugeot and #1 Audi.

Danny Watts made gains to go fastest in LMP2 in the #42 Strakka HPD, while Tom Kimber-Smith also improved late on to take second for the #41 Greaves Motorsport squad.

Across in the GTE Pro class, which had qualified earlier and therefore avoided the drama of the rain, BMW executed a perfect session as they locked out the front row of the grid and left their rivals no time or chance to respond.

Neither car had turned a wheel with seven minutes of the session remaining, but one lap each in the final minutes proved all that was needed.

Augusto Farfus led the charge in the #56 M3, storming to a 2m01.768s - at the time putting him almost 1s clear of an otherwise extremely close field. Andy Priaulx then took his turn, falling 0.3s short but still comfortably securing second. He was on a faster second lap when he hit traffic, and opted to return to the pits.

Before BMW's emphatic late display, the top six cars had been separated by just 0.227s. Toni Vilander put the #71 AF Corse Ferrari 458 top ahead of Marc Lieb in the #77 Felbermayr Porsche 911, but the pair will now start third and fourth in the Pro class.

As has been the case all weekend, the battle for the GTE Am class was fought between the Porsches. Nicolas Armindo claimed the top spot as the flag fell, putting his #67 IMSA 911 two tenths clear of the #63 Proton 911 qualified by Patrick Long.

Pagenaud and Bourdais earn Peugeot AUTOSPORT 6 Hours crown
By Sam Tremayne Sunday, September 11th 2011, 16:33 GMT

Simon Pagenaud and Sebastien Bourdais delivered Peugeot the 2011 AUTOSPORT 6 Hours of Silverstone crown after a race-long fight with the #1 Audi.

The polesitting 908 was in contention for victory throughout the race, as accidents, traffic and damage proved decisive in another engrossing instalment of the Peugeot/Audi battle.

The race swung several times in a breathtaking first hour, as the #2 Audi snatched an early lead ahead of the #7 and #8 Peugeots and sister #1 R18 - around four seconds covering the quartet.

With so little to choose between the four, traffic offered a chance for breathing space and overtaking was therefore aggressive. It would also prove a downfall.

First victim was Franck Montagny, who cut across a backmarker too early at Copse and was tagged into a spin into the barriers. The error caused heavy damage and a lengthy spell before the car was recovered, dropping the #8 908 out of contention.

Shortly after Allan McNish in the lead Audi was caught out as he dived down the inside of the #66 JMW Ferrari at Becketts - a clash for which the Ferrari was, controversially, later punished. McNish broke his steering and faced a lengthy repair in the pits, the impact of which was lessened slightly by the race's only safety car when Jody Firth span from second in class into the pit wall in the #46 TDR ORECA-Nissan.

That left a straight fight between the Pagenaud/Bourdais Peugeot and the #1 Audi of Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fassler. Again there was little to separate the pair, with both taking spells at the front as the race wore on.

The deciding moment came when Bernhard had to pit with damage to his rear and crucially to his legality boards. The Audi mechanics were superb, but a stop of around 1m proved too much to recover. Crucially they remained on the same lap but Bourdais and Pagenaud remained faultless, eventually claiming victory by just over one minute.

The #24 Oak Racing Pescarolo-Judd of Jacques Nicolet, Alexandre Premat and Olivier Pla rounded out the LMP1 podium after a long four-way battle with the sister #15 Oak and the two Rebellion Racing Lolas.

LMP2 was also influenced by damage, although eventual winners Karim Ojjeh and Tom Kimber-Smith in the #41 Greaves Nissan were rarely out of the top two.

Victory was assured however when the #45 Boutsen ORECA-Nissan had to pit with 90 minutes to go with rear damage, while earlier the #26 Strakka HPD - which had also been a challenger - suffered from a stop of a similar nature.

GTE Pro was only decided at the flag, with seven cars on the lead lap heading into the final half hour. The class win eventually went to the #51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 of Bruni Gianmaria and Giancarlo Fisichella, while second was claimed in the final minutes by Frederic Makowiecki and Stephane Ortelli in the #59 Luxury Racing Ferrari.

That demoted Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz in the #77 Felbermayr Porsche to third, while Andy Priaulx and Uwe Alzen recovered strongly to finish fourth in the #56 M3 – both BMWs having slipped from the front of the grid after struggling with long-run grip.

Porsche took a 1-2 in the GTE Am category, the #67 IMSA 911 of Nicolas Armindo and Raymond Narac once again proving the class of the field as it won by over one lap.

Audi rues cost of collisions to both cars' race hopes :-s:-(
Sunday, September 11th 2011, 19:11 GMT

Audi was left to rue the cost of two individual incidents which deprived both the #1 and #2 R18s the chance to fight for victory.

Early aggression had seen Allan McNish take the lead in a thrilling sequence with Peugeot's Sebastien Bourdais, but the Scot's hopes of victory in the #2 Audi were undone when he collided with the #66 JMW Ferrari at Becketts. The damage required two pit stops, the latter a serious overhaul of the front, which put him and Tom Kristenen five laps down and out of the running.

In their absence Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fassler took up the charge in the #1 Audi, but another clash with traffic - this time at Becketts - required repairs. The Audi crew were superb, wheeling the car into the garage and fixing the rear bodywork in just over one minute, but the deficit proved too much to overhaul.

"At the end of the day it is part of the racing," McNish reflected. "Without the damage we or the sister car had it would have been close, but that's the way it is.

"It was a good fight from the start, ebbing and flowing quite a lot – Bourdais was very quick at the beginning and then came back to me; then I got past him in traffic, and he got past me in traffic. It was good stuff, very, very close.

"One lap I thought we were going to rub, or I would rub the pit wall, and later he had a run on me at the hairpin and we went through side by side. Then two laps later the incident happened which put us out.

"Coming through Becketts Bourdais had overtaken [the #66 JMW Ferrari] in the first part, and I went round the outside as [the Ferrari] went to the left, opening the door. Then he came back quickly which was a bit of a shock, and I pulled back as much as I could but the left front got damaged.

"Traffic was bad because the circuit is quite wide and you had quite a variation of lines and lap times. Some people had interesting approaches to corners and you think the door is open and then they come straight back across. I think that was one of the issues."

Speaking of his own costly clash, Fassler said: "It was unlucky and unnecessary. We came into Becketts and the guy didn't know which way he wanted to go, I dived to right and was probably already past and then he changed, he punched me in the left-hand side and the contact broke the bodywork.

"We lost a lot in the pits because we had to change, and also we had to change strategy after Timo did a stint. The only thing we could do was to push and try to catch up, but it was much harder than the previous stint because the balance changed. Then I had another contact and that made the car tricky to drive, and very nervous into the last corner.

"For sure we could have at least had a nice chance to win. If you are on the lead lap with all the traffic there is always a chance to overtake. We had a chance."

Timo Bernhard was reflective, saying the fact such mistakes proved so important only underlined the competitiveness of the race.

"In the end it was quite an intense race," he explained. "We showed good performance but you see this is top level motorsport: if you have a small problem then it is hard to come back."

It was a Ferrari 1-2 in GTE-Pro, because the Luxury Racing 458 Italia climbed up to 2nd towards the end, overtaking one of the Porsches and one of the BMWs.
