During a recent trip to Maranello to visit the Ferrari Museum, Carscoop reader Edward Chew along with a close friend spotted this heavily camouflaged Ferrari prototype (or test mule) doing the rounds on the Italian firm's Fiorano test track.
Edward tells us that he and his friend were not sure what kind of model might be hiding behind all that cladding.

If you take a closer look at the prototype in the scoop pictures, you'll see that it has an extremely low bonnet and air outlets located at the rear end of the car, which can only mean that this is a mid-engine Ferrari model.

Now, we only know of one new mid-engined supercar that Ferrari has officially confirmed, and that's the Enzo's successor.

In a recent interview with members of the press during the presentation of the 458 Italia Spider, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa said that the flagship Ferrari model would be revealed before the end of 2012 adding that it would continue to use a mid-mounted V12 engine.

Many thanks to Edward Chew for the scoop!

What do you think? Possibly an Enzo replacement, or a new version of the 458? I'm inclined to think it could be a "Scuderia" version of the 458.

Almost certainly the Enzo replacement. Given that the 458 Spider was launched only recently, I don't think a Scuderia version will be launched until 2013 at the earliest, possibly even later.

Btw, the Enzo's predecessor was the F50 (ooh the beautiful F50 :love), this will be the Enzo's successor. ;-)

I reckon its a hardcore version of the 458, it looks very much like a 458 considering the lights and general look of the front end. Ferrari probably weren't very happy with the McLaren MP4-12C being faster so are probably making everything carbon fibre, throwing away the carpets and radio, smaller engine and this is the likely result. Also Enzo/F50 type cars care about 2 foot tall, this car doesn't look vertically challenged.

Nothing to do with the McLaren being faster. If you look at how the F430 line developed, a 458 Scuderia was always in the pipeline, once the Spider version has made a few sales. Just natural progression.

And you can bet your bottom dollar that it certainly won't have a smaller engine. It's just not the way Ferrari's design philosophy works. :-)

At the very least, it'll have a similar displacement engine with upgrades to boost the power output, and/or a higher displacement plus other upgrades.

Hard core version of the 458, it looks like. Front and rear quarter panels have a lot of resemblence.

I'm wondering if this is the custom Ferrari that Eric Clapton recently had delivered? The camoflauge is covering all the parts that Ferrari tailored for Eric.

I don't think that they are unhappy because 458 aren't slower then mp4-12c!!!And most of the magazines worldwide voted 458 the best sportcar-supercar-drivers car of the year!!!!!!!

Correct..plus the mac has like 50 more hp, but methinks the 458 Scuderia or next version will make up for that. Plus, the 458's are beating them in the races.

This car has been seen again since Eric Clapton took delivery of his car, so it's not that one. Some bodywork is visible through the camo in the new photos. What's visible doesn't look like the rear of a 458, but there is speculation that a limited edition 458 is in the pipeline. Would they really alter the rear of the 458 that much though? V12? Or are the odds stacking up that this is indeed the Enzo successor?
