The Ferrari 458 Speciale is a modern day 430 Scuderia, with nearly 600bhp, lots of new technology and active aerodynamics.

http://www.evo.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_1162/car_photo_581308_25.jpg

Meet the Ferrari 458 Speciale. Following the path taken by the 360 Challenge Stradale and 430 Scuderia (not to mention the lesser-spotted 348 GT Competizione), it’s a harder, faster and stronger version of Ferrari’s V8, mid-engine supercar, in this case the 458 Italia.

Its central stripe (seen here running down that trademark Ferrari rosso paint) is an unsubtle nod to those iconic forebears. Initially rumoured to be called the 458 Monte Carlo, it has instead been called the Speciale.

The 458’s 4.5-litre V8 engine has been tuned from 562bhp to 597bhp, resulting in a specific output of 133bhp/litre, Ferrari claiming this as the highest ever achieved by a naturally aspirated road car engine. It helps edge closer to its arch rival – the 616bhp McLaren 12C – a car which uses twin turbochargers on its V8.

The 458 Speciale’s 1290kg dry weight is 90kg lighter than a standard 458 Italia’s, and endows it with a 470bhp/ton dry power-to-weight ratio. This figure surely aids its sensational performance; 0-60 takes less than three seconds, with 0-62mph completed in 3sec dead, 124mph hit in 9.1sec and a 1m23.5sec lap of Ferrari’s Fiorano test track 1.5sec quicker than standard, 0.5sec quicker than the 599 GTO and just 0.5sec slower than the 730bhp F12 Berlinetta. At 1.33g, Ferrari is claiming the highest lateral acceleration of any of its road cars.

It’s not just more power and less weight, though, with new aerodynamic elements. The front grille treatment has changed, there’s a more sculptured front bonnet, with more ventilation, and the rear is more racecar-like with a bigger diffuser and two integrated tailpipes replacing the 458’s trademark central triple pipes. The aero elements are active and help make this Ferrari’s most aerodynamic road car yet.

A new Side Slip Control system (SSC) ups the acronym count, using the the F1-Trac traction control and E-Diff electronic differential to shuffle torque between the driven rear wheels to control slides more accurately. Also boosting balance and traction is a set of bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres.

Ferrari claims some of the 458 Speciale’s technology will make it onto its future road cars, with SSC and that active aero seeming dead certs. Inside, the Speciale appears to gain a more focused interior, with carbon bucket seats likely to complement several bits of carbonfibre trim, including a prong on which the seven-speed twin-clutch paddleshift gearbox's controls lie.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale will make its world debut at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, when we can expect more details, including its price, top speed and production numbers. North of £200,000 and a good chunk over 200mph seem very good bets, though…

Ferrari have got the Speciale on their website (http://458speciale.ferrari.com/en) now and the description says it has even better performance than what Evo stated. 605bhp rather than 597 and 135bhp/l rather than 133.

A Ferrari Speciale for special emotions.

It’s called the 458 Speciale: it’s Ferrari’s new sportscar, the fruits of the innovation and extreme technological research that have gone into a car as outstanding as the 458 Italia.

The aerodynamic efficiency (an E index of 1.5), a more powerful aspirated V8 engine (605bhp) and the highest power density (135 bhp/l) in the history of Ferrari road cars, an extraordinary power-to-weight ratio (2.13bhp/kg), electronic control of the slip angle (SSC): these are some – but not all – of the characteristics that make this car truly Speciale and that are destined to become standard for the Ferraris of the future. The aptness of the car’s name is easily shown by its performance figures: accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3s (or 9.1s for 0-200km/h) and a best lap time round Fiorano of 1m 23.5s.

The new 8-cylinder mid-engine berlinetta, which will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10, was designed with the target of raising performance and driving emotion to the highest levels, while still guaranteeing ease of control in every situation.

Not sure how I feel about this version. The winglets are gone from the 458 which I never liked anyway, but otherwise the front end is a bit strange, particularly the prancing horse area. I don't like the massive vent on the bonnet and the mini protrusions at the front corners and sides. Maybe it'll grow on me.

Another incredible masterpiece from Ferrari! Such a stunning beast. A perfect evolution of the 458 Italia. And the performance specs are just mindblowing...605 bhp and 9000 rpm from a naturally aspirated V8...that's pure engineering revolution, the kind of which only Ferrari is capable. Truly astonishing car, like all Ferraris.
And that blue/white stripe goes way back in Ferrari's history as it was used for example on the 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione:

The performance upgrade is amazing as per the stats, but don't like the white and blue lining,I kinda liked the lines on the f430 scuderia more, plus it looks more like it from the back, since it has 2 tail pipes now, have to see it in person,to have a better opinion, good that they have improved the car on cornering, cuz the 458 italia wasn't that great.

http://sssupersports.com/images/0000/articles/ferrari-458-speciale-the-supercar-of-the-year-by-top-gear.jpg

Ferrari has received two coveted awards from BBC Top Gear Magazine.

The Ferrari 458 Speciale has been crowned “Supercar of the Year 2013” and James May’s “Car of the Year”. This brings Ferrari’s tally of Top Gear Magazine Awards to the astonishing figure of 13 in 11 years, and it is the fourth time Ferrari has taken the “Supercar of the Year” award, the previous winners being the F430 in 2005, the 458 Italia in 2009 and the F12berlinetta in 2012.

Commenting on the latest addition to the Ferrari range, James May commented: “I loved it, and what I loved was that I was still driving a 458, which is already my favourite car. But it was as if someone had gone over my sensory receptors with a whetstone and sharpened them up a bit.”

With 605 HP at 9000 rpm, the Ferrari 458 Speciale is the most powerful naturally-aspirated Ferrari V8 ever produced. Combined with its extremely light kerb weight of only 1290 kg – 90kg less than the 458 Italia – the 458 Speciale has record-breaking performance: 0-100 km/h acceleration in only 3.0 seconds and a Fiorano lap time of just 1’23”5. The 458 Speciale is also the first production series Ferrari to introduce active aerodynamics, with mobile devices at the front and rear of the car, designed to improve handling, performance, driver confidence and enjoyment.

I still love shifting my own. N no, its not a Ferrari.

Stripes add nothing and are a cluttery detraction from the car's fine lines. In racing id or attention-grabbing they
are almost mandatory but don't appeal to a private guy like me. Ferrari badge front and rear and scudettos on the sides
are already more than ample.

Ferrari has taken an impressive three plaudits in this year’s special Awards Issue of the authoritative BBC TopGear Magazine, bringing its total tally to 16 over 12 years.

The 458 Speciale A, which is the Prancing Horse’s most powerful ever spider, was named “Convertible of the Year”. Commenting on the latest addition to the Ferrari range presented at the 2014 Paris Show, the magazine declared: “It’s singular and superb and utterly magnificent. It’s easily TopGear magazine’s Cabriolet of the Year. To drive this car in the blazing sun – the smells of the countryside whipping into the cabin and the Speciale’s engine bouncing merrily around the hills above Maranello – is nothing short of magical.” The 458 Speciale A is a very limited series open-top version of the 458 Speciale which won the title of “Supercar of the Year” in last year’s awards.

The LaFerrari is lauded by James May because “I’ve driven the LaFerrari very hard around Fiorano, twice, and even I can handle it. That alone makes it my “Car of the Year”; while Mr Montezemolo receives praise because “few people articulated the brand or understood how to manage its exclusivity and desirability better than di Montezemolo”.

I haven't had the chance to drive a FF.

Having a good opportunity to sample some, I would rate them in this order of preference (top being the best).

1. F12 Berlinetta
2. 458 Speciale
3. F430 Scuderia
4. 458 Spider
5. 458
6. 599 GTB HGTE
7. 360 Challenger Stradale
8. 599 GTO (I prefer the GTB, GTO seems a little too rough for a front mounted engine)
9. F430
10. California
11. F430 Spyder
12. 360
13. 355

On some cars, I prefer the Daytona Seats on the other the Challenger Sport Seats. Ceramics Brakes are a must but they tend to be pretty irritating, squeaking in the early morning.

Much prefer with lifter and must have them in Rosso or Giallo.

I once saw a 458 in Rosso Dino and one F12 in Rosso Rubino. Wow!

Not a fan of Nero, Grigio or Bianco.

The 360CS is a cult status car. Slap in a tubi or an akrapovic exhaust and you will banned from the neighbourhood... :lol

I think it's the lighting. 430 is rosso Corsa and 458 is in giallo modena bicolore ( black roof ).

Both fantastic colors! I really like Giallo Modena as much as Rosso Corsa on almost every Ferrari! I just don't like Giallo on a California though

Everytime I drive thru Naples (Florida that is) I see quite a few fabulous cars.
458 Spyder which to me has the best V8 in the world, sounds amazing...550 Maranello which
looks to be a bigger car than photo's suggest, 360's, 328's n the other day while heading
to Bonita beach I found myself behind a California. Very nice car, just doesnt have quite the sound
of the others.

California is a very nice car as well, but I have to say I like the new California T a lot better! Some California's have really uggly rims :-s

I havent seen a Cali T yet, but it looks a bit more svelte in pix than does the older Cali.
According to a program I saw, its a much better car too.
