Text from TopGear

Welcome, everybody, to Ferrari's new supercar. This is the 488 GTB, a car that not only suggests there is no naming structure whatsoever at Maranello, but also brings turbocharging to the company's littlest supercar for the first time.

We'll suspend any shock or outrage, as that's been common knowledge since the California T landed. And to help ease any lingering anger, Ferrari has ensured its McLaren 650S-fighter has a shedload of power.

A 3.9-litre V8 may be over half a litre shy of the unit in the 458 it replaces, but with two turbochargers, it's quite a bit more powerful. Figures of 661bhp and 561lb ft stand up exceedingly well to its 562bhp/398lb ft predecessor, as well as that McLaren.

The 488 GTB also compares favourably to the Ferrari 599 GTO of only a few years ago, which had 661bhp and 457lb ft from its 6.0-litre turbo-free V12, and ranks as one of the more extreme Ferraris we've seen lately. The 488 GTB, then, won't be slow.

Performance? The 0-62mph sprint takes 3.0 seconds - identical to the stripped-out 458 Speciale - but the 488's 0-124mph time of 8.3 seconds is nearly a second quicker. Its top speed will be 205mph-plus.

Ferrari uses lap times of its Fiorano test track as a performance benchmark; a 1m23s dead makes the 488 GTB half a second quicker than the Speciale, which in turn makes it two seconds quicker than both the standard 458 and the mighty Enzo.

With a 1370kg dry weight, the 488 GTB is 10kg lighter than the 458 Italia, and while it's a little longer and wider, the overall resemblance its obvious.
Its 260g/km CO2 emissions - a core reason for strapping a pair of turbos to a downsized engine - represent a 15 per cent drop over its forebear.

We're promised the throttle response and progressive power delivery for which Ferraris - and revvy N/A engines - are renowned, with something called ‘Variable Torque Management' built into the paddleshift gearbox to deliver the torque across the rev range, just like we sampled on the California T.
Peak power arrives at 8000rpm, dizzyingly high for a forced induction engine, and a suggestion the rev limit shouldn't be too far shy of the 458's screaming 9000rpm. We're also promised a soundtrack "that is full, clear and totally distinctive".
There are more than bald figures to be wowed by, of course. There's Ferrari's usual gamut of driver-flattering technology, honed using its ‘XX' track programme.

Most exciting is a second-gen version of Side Slip Angle Control, now working with the suspension's active dampers for greater precision. "The 488 GTB provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers", promises Ferrari.

Aerodynamics play a predictably huge role. The 488's underbody is flat, for greater airflow, while there are all manner of active flaps and spoilers. Aero's dictated the car's styling, too: just look at the aggression of that rear diffuser, the intricacies of the front splitter, and those rather eye-grabbing air intakes (with what look to be their own moveable flaps) just behind the doors.

Trust Ferrari to somehow make geeking out on air intakes cool. And hopefully we can trust it to replace the sublime naturally aspirated 458 with something turbocharged without stuffing it up.

We'll learn more about the 488 GTB at next month's Geneva motor show, where it will share hall space with McLaren's 675 LT. Which is whetting your appetite most?

WoW. I like it. New side intakes give it a trong stance. Love the clean simple rear end and front fascia. so elegant without being fussy. So much nicer than the boy racer looks of the McLaren.

Very beautiful, yet I hope they dont do away with the 458 yet.
I dont see why they cannot sell them side by side.

What a beauty of a car! Iam afraid the 458 will be away soon. Looks like this will be the succesor of the 458!

Whoa! Very beautiful and sexy machine, no doubt about it. The only small gripe I have is about the turbo engine, I would prefer a naturally aspirated V8 engine, but then again if the turbo engine produces a whopping 661hp and more torque then who can have anything against that lol. Amazing and gorgeous car for sure.

Maranello, 3 February 2015

Forty years on from the unveiling of its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. The Ferrari 488 GTB provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Its response times, nimbleness and on-the-limit driving guarantee a unique sense of exhilaration and unparalleled driving pleasure.

The new berlinetta brilliantly encapsulates Ferrari’s experience in both F1 and the WEC, where the 458 GT holds the World Championship title and has won its category in the last two editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The new model also exploits to the full the know-how gleaned by Ferrari technicians over the last decade through the XX programme which makes extreme track-only cars available to gentleman test-drivers. The data yielded has made a significant contribution to the refinement of the electronic and vehicle control systems so that drivers can make the most of the incredible performance of this new car.

Powertrain
The Ferrari 488 GTB’s new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at top of the class for power output, torque and response times, making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture. The engine unleashes 670 cv at 8,000 rpm along with 760 Nm of maximum torque in seventh gear and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds at 2,000 rpm. These figures are sufficient to allow the 488 GTB to accelerate from 0-200 km/h in an astonishing 8.3 seconds and, when combined with the radical innovations introduced on all aspects of the car’s performance, lap the Fiorano track in just 1’23”.

The gearbox features Variable Torque Management which unleashes the engine’s massive torque smoothly and powerfully right across the rev range, while specific gear ratios deliver incredibly progressive acceleration when the driver floors the throttle. As is always the case, engineers have dedicated great attention to perfecting the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sound, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine.

Aerodynamics
The car’s aerodynamics also made a pivotal contribution to performance: its 1.67 efficiency figure is a new record for a production Ferrari and is the fruit of 50 per cent more downforce than the previous model and reduced drag. The greatest challenge was achieving these two goals simultaneously. Several innovative elements were specifically developed to do so, not least a double front spoiler, base bleed side intakes and, at the rear, active aerodynamics coupled with a blown spoiler. The aerodynamic underbody, which incorporates vortex generators, is highly sophisticated, too.

Vehicle dynamics
The Ferrari 488 GTB’s subsystems and electronic controls make its power and performance instantly available and controllable. It is, in fact, the most responsive production model there is, with razor-sharp response times comparable to those of a track car.

The evolved version of Ferrari’s side slip angle control system (Side Slip Control 2 – SSC2), is more precise and less invasive, providing greater longitudinal acceleration out of corners. Aside from integrating with car’s F1-Trac and E-Diff, the SSC2 now also controls the active dampers which renders the car’s dynamic behaviour during complex manoeuvres even flatter and more stable.

Exterior design
Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new car features very sculptural flanks which are the key to its character. Its large signature air intake scallop is a nod to the original 308 GTB and is divided into two sections by a splitter. The wide front spoiler features a double profile to improve the thermal efficiency of the radiators positioned at the sides. At the centre two pylons are combined with a deflector which channels air towards the flat underbody. The broad, low tail is also dominated by aerodynamic solutions, including an innovative blown spoiler which generates downforce without increasing drag. This works in conjunction with an aggressive ramp angle for the diffuser which features active flaps. The greater height required for the diffuser was achieved by repositioning the exhaust tailpipes. The circular LED tail lights have also been redesigned.

Interior design
In the cabin, the seamless integration of the new satellite control clusters, angled air vents and instrument panel heightens the sense that the cockpit is completely tailored around the driver. Usability was the key word in the design, leading to an extremely sporty ambience that in no way compromises on comfort. There are plenty of classic Ferrari styling elements too, such as the clear separation between the dashboard and tunnel, the multifunctional steering wheel, the control switch bridge and wraparound seats. The graphics and interface of the infotainment screen have also been completely redesigned while the design of the Ferrari 488 GTB’s new key takes its inspiration from the car’s cylinder banks and allows keyless starts.

The 488 GTB will make its world debut at the International Geneva Motor Show in March.

Heres the dilemma to me. The 458 V8 has been dubbed the best motor in the world for a few years now.
So what does a company do with the "best motor in the world?"
Youve got to use it for something. Id hate to see this jewel simply disappear...
The engine in the 488 is a reworked version of the California from what Ive read.
The Cali is no barnburner. Why didnt they simply turbo the 458's?
I love engines, n Id hate to see this one simply go away.

The V8 engine in the 458 is the best naturally aspirated V8 engine in the world, that's a fact, but that engine has already been used in 4 different 458 models and Ferrari obviously wants to keep that naturally aspirated engine exclusively on the 458 model. The 488 GTB is in essence a completely new car, although it looks similar to the 458 it's still a new car, which should be considered separate from the 458, and since Ferrari decided to use a turbo engine on the 488 GTB then it was much easier and cost effective to take the already existing turbo engine from the California T and simply develop it more and crank up the power to get the necessary horsepower numbers for the 488 GTB. I once watched a video about the Cali T where the reviewer said that it would be possible to get about 750-800 hp from the Cali T V8 turbo engine, so there is a lot more potential in that engine than the current 661 hp.

Yea, I simply love the 458..to me the lineage dates back to the Dino, n I guess the 488
continues that lineage. I would just hate to see the 458 go away. I imagine it will be
around for a while anyway..sales still seem pretty strong.
Im off, going to find a 1:43 racing 458.

One thing for sure, it wont sound like a 458.

She's a beauty. Any clumsiness in design becomes obvious in a silver car - and imo the silver one shown
in Geneva was prettier and more interesting to look at than the red. I'll have to get used to the split side
intakes which are understandably larger than those on the 458 and no doubt serve separate and different
functions. Cleaner and more efficient front and rear much refined from it's already gorgeous predecessor.
