I believe Kubica was destined for Ferrari before this happened I just hope at the very least he recovers to lead a normal life and if can he return to F1 as how he left at the peak of he's powers then I hope he comes to Ferrari soon.

The doctor in charge of Robert Kubica's rehabilitation says it is a "certainty" that he will return to Formula One in 2012.

Kubica's recovery has been the centre of much attention since his final operation, and the scrutiny was increased when Renault team principal Eric Boullier set a deadline of mid-October for confirmation of his driver line-up for next season. Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli said that he still couldn't put a firm date on Kubica's return, but that it would allow him to resume racing.

"I would say with certainty that Robert will be a F1 driver in 2012," Ceccarelli told Omnicorse. "I cannot say when he will be ready but it will be between the months of November and January."

Ceccarelli also said that the functionality of Kubica's right hand is no longer a concern.

"Yes, it's great, even if this healing is gradual. Not forgetting that Robert suffered injuries to two of the three nerves, and had severs of the tendons and muscles, the feeling has come back to the fingertips."

Kubica has yet to drive as part of his recovery, which Ceccarelli said was the result of giving his leg more stability while other injuries healed, but that he would soon be able to begin building up muscle again.

"It is true, Robert still has an external fixator on his leg and we have not rushed to remove it - the longer the better, and the better result. So as we wait for the healing of the hand and the elbow, there is still no hurry... The muscles have been inactive for months and so need to recover tone and strength. But the big question - if he can drive in formula one again - has gone."

Kubica's manager Daniele Morelli said that Boullier's deadline may be difficult to meet, but that he too was "certain" Kubica would be able to return.

"We are not able to predict a precise date (for Kubica's return) because it is nature taking its course," Morelli said. "But we are optimistic, very optimistic, and I do not think a delay of a couple of weeks can affect the plans. One thing is certain - he is coming back. The only problem now is muscular."

Hmm it just got me thinking ----this thread about the Kube has been running since his accident. I like kube and am always interested to hear about his progress but he has no links with Ferrari!!!
There is also one about Kimi again always interesting to hear what an ex-Ferrari driver is doing.
YET a thread about Mercedes started by RAZ to-day was closed very quickly!!!! Merc has at least 3 ex Ferrari team players there so it could have been of interest to some!!!

Well he's certainly linked with a test seat at Ferrari for 2012, so that's a pretty big link, though I don't believe it, I think he'll drive for Renault I'd expect.

As I look at Robert I can not stop being astonished how well all it went: All fractures healed, the wound healed. The only question is whether Robert will be able to ride as before. But that will be evaluated by specialists. We have done our job perfectly

AM: So from the physical side Robert will be able to return to full fitness and form before the accident?

IR: Yes, it is possible. I would like to emphasize how much Robert is determined. He already knows that he will be able to return to racing. and he is even more stimulated

AM: It is known that in Formula 1, the functionality of the hand should be perfect. Will be no limitations in this case?

IR: For sure there will be some limitations. In such cases, it never comes back to one hundred percent efficiency. But we considered amputation, so it shows how serious the situation was. We fought for life, then to save the arm, his condition was very bad, so hand wount be like before the accident. But he will be able to drive, operate the buttons on the steering wheel, this is what we can be sure. Robert Kubica to miss start of 2012 Season

Robert Kubica has today informed Lotus Renault GP that, despite having started an intensive training programme, it is still too early for him to commit to driving in the 2012 championship. Robert’s progress remains impressive – he can now walk freely, and move his hand and elbow -, but he feels that he needs more time to return to full fitness.

Lotus Renault GP remains committed to helping Robert as much as possible in his recovery process. A test car is ready and waiting for him, and a dedicated crew is on stand-by. Of course, Robert will remain a member of the LRGP family in 2012 and he is already, through his management, holding talks about renewing his contract for the following season.

Although very disappointed by the news, Lotus Renault GP will start assessing its options and will evaluate the most suitable candidate to drive from the first 2012 winter testing session. Once again, all the members of Lotus Renault GP wish Robert a full and speedy recovery as we say: “Szybkiego powrotu do zdrowia” - Get well soon our friend.

Robert Kubica: “Even if I’ve been working very, very hard over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet certain to be ready for the 2012 season. I have called the team and I have informed them of the situation. This was a difficult decision to make, but it is the most reasonable one. I also know that LRGP need to prepare for next year, and further extending deadlines would not have been the right thing to do. On a personal level, my recovery is still very encouraging and my doctors keep being impressed. I just need more time, as I want to be 100% ready before I commit to anything driving related. Finally, I regret not having been able to provide more news and not having appeared in the papers, and I thank my friends of the media for understanding that this has been the best way for me to cope with what has been the most difficult period of my life.”

Eric Boullier, Managing Director and Team Principal: “Everybody in the team is, of course, very disappointed today. Robert not driving in Australia at the start of next season is not what we were all hoping for. However, he has taken a very mature decision, acting in the best interests of Lotus Renault GP. As a team and as a family, we remain 100% behind him and we’ll help as much as we can. A programme composed of simulator testing, single-seater and F1 track time is awaiting him. In the meantime, we will start talking to a few drivers in order to finalise our line-up for next year as soon as possible. Robert will take it step by step and will jump back in his racing car when he feels it is the right moment to do so. On behalf of all 520 members of the team, I wish him a speedy recovery.”

To be honest, that didn't come as a surprise to me. Its not something that can be rushed, or should be rushed. A sudden decision to race this late is highly unlikely.

I say get him into a GP2 race car as early as possible in 2012 and work towards a 2013 Ferrari Driver position. He strength to handle the G's are very, very important. He can do it just like his last accident. It just takes time. I honestly think Massa is now past his prime and he is having difficulty finding his form again. His accident still haunts him. Kubica's case, I think things are quite different but only time will tell if I am right??? Maybe the accident has damaged him physically and mentally. We will not know until he starts driving on the edge at that high level again.

Robert Kubica Injures Leg In Fall

Robert Kubica has injured his leg in a fall near his home, with sources close to the Polish driver suggesting that he has reopened a fracture that he sustained in his rally accident last year.
It is understood that Kubica fell over on ice in Pietrasanta, where he lives, and subsequently complained of pain in the right leg which was broken in his crash. He was driven to the local hospital for checks.
Although there has been no official statement, it is understood that it has been found that Kubica has reopened the fracture in his right tibia.
Kubica's latest injury setback comes on the same day that Ferrari played down talk that it was planning to test the Polish driver later this year once he was fully recovered.
Sources suggested that the injury is likely to delay his recovery by at least three weeks.
"That was not on our plan," said Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali at the annual Wrooom media event.
"For sure Robert Kubica is a great driver that had a very severe injuries and at the moment he is still working very hard to try to go back to his normal living.
"So before any kind of thinking or discussion of whatever could be, we need to wait and see. For sure that kind of injury is taking a long time to recover so I can say we will wait and see if he is going to recover, but at the moment there is nothing in place."

It was one of the fractures in the rally accident, it opened up again.

Interesting comment from Stefano, it looks to me like Ferrari really were aiming to get him.
Sometimes you make bad decisions, or your lifestyle costs you, maybe without all the rallying and taking risks in other sports Kubica wouldn't have been the great driver he is, yet it really feels like by risking injury in rally he wasted what it might have been his best season last year, and not being able to prove his quality these last two years might yet lose him a chance at getting a seat at the best possible team he could have signed for, Ferrari.

This is what I call bad luck, hoping for the best but it's hard to believe that he will be a top driver in F1.
