    Thanks for the link

Translated briefly..."Daniele Morelli (RK Manager) told SktTG24 said that the surgery is not easy even though Robert is in good hands so they will wait till tonight till about 8pm or 9pm when the surgery should be finished. There is no more risk of amputation, now it's just about regaining functionality to the hand"

Alot depends on how much and what type of trauma there is to the muscles and nerves, broken bones in themselves can heal, functionality will depend on the extent and type of trauma to the tissue. He maybe really lucky. I guess we will know more once he is out of surgery. I am sure he is receiving the very best care.

I'm hoping it won't be as serious as it's coming across

@adamcooperf1 #F1 Real background info, but Robert was taken to a hospital just 30kms away from the base of one of Italy's top hand surgeons
    That sounds very positive.

Italian tv said right now that during the crash the guard rail almost cut off his right arm near the hand and with surgery their trying to "rebuild" it and the situation idoesn't sound good for that hand. Really sad situation.

This sounds very positive thank you for posting and translating! I just hope he can be race fit again and this does not ruin his career in racing.
I hate it when anything like this happens to any of our F1 boys.
    Come on Bobby fight it.

    From autosprint:

"Only after 9 p.m. , when the delicate surgery will end, the real consequences of the accident for Robert Kubica will be known . The Polish driver is under surgery by mid-afternoon. The surgeons , among them Professor Igor Rossello, a luminary of microsurgery of the hand, are trying to heal tissue and reattach his right hand that has been virtually crushed in the accident. The guard-rail that has penetrated the car almost sliced the tissues of the hand, but fortunately, the artery was then reintegrated thanks to a difficult but succesful intervention
The surgeon team is working on the hand of Kubica hoping to save it, well knowing that the future mobility of the hand will have to be verified much later.
Otherwise, they will have to carry out the amputation.
There are less serious concerns with the other injuries. Kubica was trapped almost 90 minutes in the cockpit of the Skoda S2000. He suffers many fractures , both to the arm to the femur. We recall that since 2003, Kubica has a plaque on his right arm that he had already almost lost because of another accident. Because of the large number of transfusions the Pole has been submitted to, the prognosis is still reserved."

This is possibly career ending, let's hope not but having to rebuild his hand may mean he loses a lot of control even after they manage to fix it properly. Then again, he was always very fast, maybe even if he loses a bit of control he still remains a very good F1 driver.
I didn't find the idea of participating in a series more dangerous than F1 for "fun" too wise, even less considering that as wealthy and successful as Kubica probably already is, he hasn't yet achieved what he could, I hope he doesn't end regretting his rally adventures.

They are good friends but it's still nice to hear that Fernando has gone to visit his friend.

It's normal that Fernando is there, this is a time to be near a friend and that is what he does. Shows he has his heart in the right place.
As for Robert, I really, really hope this will not end the passion of his life. That would be very cruel.
It will be a long way back to the F1 cockpit I'm afraid but let's pray he will get that far.
One thing I know: the day Robert returns to F1 racing all Ferrari fans should cheer for him.

Wow this is terrible news :( I know it's a freak accident and everything, but when are formula 1 teams going to stop their drivers from competing in other, extremely dangerous events.... rally is the most dangerous form of racing left on this planet, why allow your drivers to compete in their spare time????

Hope he's alright and lives a long and normal life....

You can also easily brake a leg when skiing, its a dangerous sport, and Ferrari has that wroom event every ear just before the season starts. And every time i have seen Fernando on skies i have been praying nothing wrong would happen.

It was a freak accident and you can't prevent everything.

If I am not mistaken, most F1 drivers from when F1 started are adrenalin junkies, what has happened is tragic, but can you really see these guys getting there kicks playing on a WII or play station for 14 hours a day like an unemployed teenager?

MS karted, James Hunt rode fast women, each has there own risk

Yes, but IMO it makes no sense to be doing this while employed by an F1 team....

I work in business, on the weekends, I don't go moonlighting as a pro-wrestler or bodybuilder and risk injuring myself, thereby leaving the company I work for without its project leader.... in fact, my contract specifically states that I can only provide services to them....

I'm pretty sure Renault and their sponsors were ok with this, I think he had some backing from them.

I don't think it's possible to stop F1 drivers doing this kind of thing without alienating them somewhat - although i would agree that rally is particularly dangerous as a second sport and they clearly didn't consider the "what-if's" in this case.

There's similarity with Senna's accident as it involved a wall and something penetrating the cockpit as a result that caused all the damage. It's ironic because F1 has now become so safe - partly as a result of that accident that the risks are now greater when they compete outside of F1 it seems. Mark Webber is another example - did more damage cycling than he did somersaulting through the air at 190mph in an F1 car.

When you think of his Canada crash it's a miracle Robert survived that and hopefully he'll survive this, although amazingly it will take him a lot longer

    Latest news:

21:20 FIRST TIME ESTIMATE ON RECOVERY
Igor Rossello, a member of the two teams, said that "if the operation went well, it will take a year of rehabilitation."

21.15 Closing remarks: surgery lasted 7 hours
The operation lasted seven hours. The operation worked two teams of doctors. One has dealt with the right hand, while the other was mindful of the fractures in his left leg. The operation was very complex and the two teams have made it known that the prognosis will be dissolved in 5 / 7 days.
