    Interesting development!

I said many months ago that Ferrari should look to exploit the sides of the full length of the race car to draw air from the sides and the underside of the Under Tray area of the race car. The Venturi effect of the drawing the air from the underside of the race car will provide a "Ground Effects" result if the air under the Under Tray is drawn rapidly from under the race car. It is a about capturing that air and channeling it to aid downforce. I also saw the warm air caused by exhaust system as a means to have high and low pressure air masses generated by rapid convection.

    Ciao.

    Forza Ferrari!!!!

All F1 cars are flat bottom now. In the past, they were allow to have shaped bottom to help accelerate the air flowing underneath it, but that concept is banned now and all cars are required to have flat bottoms

Ferrari shops at McLaren to boost aerodynamics

Ferrari shops at McLaren to boost aerodynamics

Pat Fry has attracted a swathe of engineers to follow his move from McLaren to Ferrari.

After a long and fruitful McLaren career, Briton Fry switched to Ferrari last year and is now the famous Italian team’s chassis technical director.

According to Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, he has convinced his former senior McLaren colleagues including Rupad Darekar, Jonathan Heal, Ioannis Veloudis, Lawrence Hodge and Giacomo Tortora to join him at Ferrari.

And Finland’s Turun Sanomat reports that McLaren’s aerodynamics project leader Marcin Budkowski is also set to switch to Ferrari.

But on the F1Enigma blog, McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale insisted Budkowski is simply taking a “well earned sabbatical” and will return to work later in 2012.

Wrooom 2012: Rossi and Hayden in Madonna di Campiglio January 8th

The Wrooom is now a major event on the calendar for fans, a meeting that started the new season at the same time presenting the program of races for 2012 Ducati MotoGP and Ferrari in F1 . Ferrari have hired a shed load of people from McLaren:

He is joined by Greece’s Ioannis Veloudis, Italy’s Giacomo Tortora and Britain’s Lawrence Hodge. In addition to these engineers Fry has also lured away Jonathan Heal, a senior stress engineer at McLaren for the last seven years. A master of aeronautical engineering from Imperial College, London, Heal joined McLaren from Airbus in 2005.

Doubt it, the new materials are for the floor/diffuser - Crash tests are only done on the nose, sidepods [3 angles] and rollbar.

How could this new composite material help the Floor, Diffuser? Is to do with flexing or faster air flow?

It could be to do with directing the heat better to use elsewhere. Don't forget, you can't use exhaust gases but there's nothing to say you can't use the heat from the engine and elsewhere. The new materials might be better for heat transfer.

Sounds Interesting. May be they will make the mixture leaner towards Engine, Gear Box & gradually it will become richer towards the end of the Floor/Difuser to direct this heat. This can enable low pressure at this area & hence faster air flow.

New rumors about 663 from @joseluisf1

Alonso has been testeing the front suspension modifications in the simulator recently made by Fry and others new

After several hours in the simulator, he told James Tortora and Pat Fry something like, 'This would have had options in 2011'

Apparently the management of Pirelli has nothing to do with the F150 º, however the balance is yet to be improved.

Kinda explains why Red Bull always seemed to have a good car setup for the race weekend. Now that Ferrari have a better simulator, they can make use of better setups.

Twitter rumors that we will in first tests try out more conservative version and parts of the car (basic parts so to say, chassis, reliability etc). Other "crazy" parts will come later cos they are apparently very "extreme". "vulgar" and "stylish" :) I hope that those crazy Byrne-ideas will work well... :)

Yup, i reckon we should conceal our 'crazy' parts until the last test so that other competitors don't steal them before the first race. Though i think Ferrari will use an incremental approach and introduce parts one by one.

I think it can also warm up rear tire faster.

The 663 might be designed for Fernando, but a good balance will be even more beneficial to Massa - as he is in dire need of some self-confidence.

I'm hoping that McLaren have problems with balance next year, because Button is very sensitive to it. If you give Button a bad car he will put in average performance. That's why he was beaten by Barrichello on a number of occasions at Honda.

I like the direction Ferrari has decided to take the Design Team! If Aero Development is the basis of the modern Formula One Race car then find the most season Aero Engineers and let them go a muck with ideas and directions. Ferrari has just pursued the most experienced and seasoned Aero people in the sport to elevate the Ferrari Team to reach further than ever before. The engines are frozen, so only the exploitation of the Aero Rules will allow a team to advance. I think this is a very smart direction for Ferrari to go.

    Ciao.

    Forza Ferrari!!!!

    From Jose Luis:

    • Pat Fry seems to have discovered the solution to the balance of 663, have tried some modifications to the front wing and engine cover
    • The result seems to have been good in the tunnel and simulations, so the production of parts pass immediately
    • Byrne's new fund, is in 'queue' for the other parts test more urgent, but next week could already know something
    • Alonso is optimistic about the way the 663 is the Pirelli and the new way of driving, concerned about the reliability
    • The relationship between Alonso and Pat Fry is so good and strong already in Maranello jokingly says Andrea Stella is 'jealous'
