Question Brabham name could return to F1

Monday 31 December at 05:35 : Dec.31 (GMM) The famous Brabham name could return to formula one.

Former triple world champion Sir Jack Brabham, an Australian who is now 86, founded his eponymous team in 1960 and it later raced under Bernie Ecclestone's stewardship.

In 2009, a German automotive supply company, Formtech, claimed it now controls the Brabham team name and filed an official entry for the 2010 F1 season.

But the Brabham family hit back, launching legal action to "protect the family name".

Jack Brabham's son David, a sports car racing specialist who contested 30 grands prix in the 90s, said: "Right now this is a very sensitive issue.

"But, yes, there is the possibility to bring the team back (to F1)," he told Brazil's Totalrace.

The Brabham team won two constructors' and 4 drivers' titles in the 60s and 80s, last racing with Damon Hill at the wheel in 1992.

David Brabham continued: "For now, we have a predicament behind the scenes, involving the rights of the name.

"It's 98 per cent resolved, and when it is 100 per cent we'll see what we can do."

It would be nice if a historic team would return back to F1. I like that more than a sponsorteam like Red Bull or so

    Why bother?
Another English kit car maker who died as a backmarker team. Let the team rest in peace.
Brabham only has real history when Jack Brabham and Ron Tranuac were involved and they made their own engines.

Huh? Did'nt Nelson Piquet win two WDC in the mid 80s in a BMW Brabham? I hardly call that a backmarker.

Hence the bmw part, they were like Mclaren and redbull are now, buying engines from whomever they could.
Unlike a REAL maker like ferrari who builds the whole car.

Jack Babham and John Cooper pioneered the rear engined Formula 1 car set up in the mid fifties, the fore runner of the cars we see today. He not only won two championships with Coopers but went on to win the 1966 title in a car of his and Tranauc's design. I think Denny Hulme also won the title an a Brabham. Never mind the "Bernie" years, a name with this history deserves respect so let's hope any re-entry into the modern day F1 brings a sucsessful operation

Yes they outsource some, but they arent as bad as the so called english teams who have to scrape and beg for everything.
The first brabhams used modified buick motors, done by repco in Aus.
