Depends on your perspective, maybe he's finding the reality in the latest news, which is not really new, what he says is true, we knew in April he was out of the coma and had very limited interaction, which is exactly what I thought when I saw it on SSN this morning, so todays news is just that he has been moved, no more, there appears to be no actual change in his condition since April, everyone appears to be euphoric and jumped on the news that he is out of a coma, but we knew that already, the fact he has been moved suggests to me there is no more the doctors at Grenoble can do, I'm not generally a pessimistic person, but if he can simply blink once for yes and twice for no, then I'm not cheered much by todays news, but i'll guess we'll never know the truth now as Sabine has made it very clear we'll get no further updates, that suggests to me his current condition is now not expected to improve, so I guess there is only one update left...

By definition of coma, the doctor is indeed correct. But, what exactly is the difference between 'moments of consciousness' & 'out of coma'?
If indeed there is no improvement in his condition since April, why not say so?

Yes, shifting from the hospital in Grenoble means there is not much doctors can do but if he is fully awake, what else can they do but hope he rehabilitates into good recovery? I am no doctor but if his brain pressure was released, sedation was reduced all left was to hope he comes out of coma & start his recovery.

Yes I agree the lack of proper updates is the most damning evidence that this story is not going to end well.

Michael Schumacher is out of a coma and has left Grenoble hospital with reports he can communicate with his wife

That sounds more positive than I ever expected yesterday when we were all still in the dark. Come on Shumi!

Out of the coma means he is no longer constantly unconscious, basically he opened his eyes, hence he has moments of consciousness, that is a minimally conscious state, this just means he has inconsistent reactions to his surroundings, this is obviously better than pvs, but to what extent we have no idea, and is he still on a ventilator..? I assume he is...
The statement didn't say there was any improvement, only he was out of the coma (which we knew in April), that he has been moved to an undisclosed location, which we now know is Lausanne Hospital, and that there would be no further updates...

Totally agree with this. I do not want to know the detail, to know he is alive still and will be in the loving care of his family is all I now need. I don't think we will ever have the happy outcome we would all want but I think it is now time to let go and let his family do what they - love and care for him. I wish them all well and maybe who knows in the future we may hear of something amazing - in the meantime - well done Champ for surviving something that would almost of killed other less fit people. My mantra is always where there is life there is hope. God be with you all.

After coming out of coma, i guess it takes time to make sure a patient is in a stable situation or not, so I guess Schumacher was out of coma for awhile and it takes long to get back home because of doctors analyses to know if he is in stable situation or not?
    Any way congratulations...

I don't think anyone who is pleased about today's news is naive enough to believe that Michael is as he was, but after so many weeks with nothing it is just good to hear something even resembling a positive update.

I think you're being too pessimistic. In my opinion there are many positives to take from the statement that he's not in a coma anymore and that he's been transferred to a rehabilitation clinic. If his condition would be extremely critical then surely they wouldn't have taken the risk to transfer him from Grenoble to Lausanne. Today's news are good and positive, but that's just my opinion. I'm definitely more hopeful and optimistic now than I was yesterday for example. As long as he's alive, there is always hope and if anyone can pull through this then it's Schumi.

Awaking is a very, very complex issue - read this brilliant article on the subject!

    Revealing scan

Kate Bainbridge, a 26-year-old schoolteacher, lapsed into a coma three days after she came down with a flu-like illness. Her brain became inflamed, along with the primitive region atop the spinal cord, the brain stem, which rules the sleep cycle. A few weeks after her infection had cleared, Kate awoke from the coma but was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state. Luckily, the intensive care doctor responsible for her, David Menon, was also a Principal Investigator at the newly opened Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre in Cambridge, where one Adrian Owen then worked.

In 1997, four months after she had been diagnosed as vegetative, Kate became the first patient in a vegetative state to be studied by the Cambridge group. The results, published in 1998, were unexpected and extraordinary. Not only did Kate react to faces: but her brain responses were indistinguishable from those of healthy volunteers. Her scans revealed a splash of red, marking brain activity at the back of her brain, in a part called the fusiform gyrus, which helps recognise faces. Kate became the first such patient in whom sophisticated brain imaging (in this case PET) revealed “covert cognition”. Of course, whether that response was a reflex or a signal of consciousness was, at the time, a matter of debate.

The results were of huge significance for science but also for Kate and her parents. “The existence of preserved cognitive processing removed the nihilism that pervaded the management of such patients in general, and supported a decision to continue to treat Kate aggressively,” recalls Menon.

Kate eventually surfaced from her ordeal, six months after the initial diagnosis. “They said I could not feel pain,” she says. “They were so wrong.” Sometimes she’d cry out, but the nurses thought it was just a reflex. She felt abandoned and helpless. Hospital staff had no idea how much she suffered in their care. Kate found physiotherapy scary: nurses never explained what they were doing to her. She was terrified when they removed mucus from her lungs. “I can’t tell you how frightening it was, especially suction through the mouth,” she has written. At one point, her pain and despair became so much that she tried to snuff out her life by holding her breath. “I could not stop my nose from breathing, so it did not work. My body did not seem to want to die.”

Kate says her recovery was not so much like turning a light on but a gradual awakening. It took her five months before she could smile. By then she had lost her job, her sense of smell and taste, and much of what might have been a normal future. Now back with her parents, Kate is still very disabled and needs a wheelchair. Twelve years after her illness, she started to talk again and, though still angry about the way she was treated when she was at her most vulnerable, she remains grateful to those who helped her mind to escape.

The New York Daily News reported today:
The former top doctor for F1 dismissed word that racing legend Michael Schumacher has emerged from a coma 170 days after suffering a brain injury during a skiing accident.
On Monday Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, said he was able to have limited communication. But Dr. Gary Hartstein questioned on his blog why Kehm did not say that Schumacher would enter rehab. Hartstein said Schumacher is probably in a "minimally conscious state"- as was likely the case in April, when Kehm said he showed "moments of conciousness and awakening." We fans can only hope for the best for Michael and family.

    I saw this today:

Michael Schumacher, who suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident last December, is no longer in a coma, according to his management.

Furthermore, the seven-time world champion has now left Grenoble’s University Hospital in France to ‘continue his long phase of rehabilitation’.

“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months,” read a statement.

“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.”

Schumacher, 45, was placed in an induced coma after falling and hitting his head on a rock during a family ski trip. The German’s medical team began reducing his sedation at the end of January.

“For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye,” concluded Monday’s statement.

With seven drivers’ titles, 91 Grand Prix victories and 68 pole positions, Schumacher remains the most successful driver in Formula One history. He retired at the end of the 2012 season.

I guess I have missed it, but it seem like Sabine Kehm has actually released an official statement which was a good news. If it's official that Schumi is now in rehabilitation state, then that's good news.

It's confusing to still have articles that try to picture a worse case situation such as that NY Daily article. I think the media should just leave it at the positive note from Sabine.

Schumacher treated like any other patient

Michael Schumacher is receiving neurological treatment and rehabilitation in the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) like any other patient, his doctor Richard Frackowiak said on Tuesday.

Treating the record holding Formula One champion from Germany was “business as usual,” Frackowiak, the chief neuroscienist at the Swiss hospital, told Swiss news agency SDA.

The only unusual aspect in treating the high-profile patient are the security arrangements to protect him, Frackowiak said, declining to talk about Schumacher’s health condition.

The 45-year-old former race driver hit his head on a rock and sustained severe brain injuries while skiing in France on December 29. He underwent operations and was placed in an induced coma, from which doctors at Grenoble University Hospital Centre began slowly waking him in late January.

Neurosciences are one of CHUV’s prioritiy areas, and it is the only Swiss hospital which follows an approach of close cooperation between neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and rehabilitation specialists, Frackowiak added.

Schumacher arrived Monday in Lausanne, which is just a 30-minute drive from his family home in the town of Gland on Lake Geneva. Various broadcast teams and photographers have set up in front of the university clinic. “One photo of Schumi with open eyes, maybe even a smile – I’d wait weeks for that,” one French photographer said.

“The transfer doesn’t mean that his condition improved markedly in the last few weeks. But he no longer needed to be in intensive care and a programme of rehabilitation is now under way.

“He is still going in and out of consciousness but he is having more moments of consciousness more regularly than in April.

“He certainly can’t talk but there is some degree of communication.

“His doctors and family speak to him but he gets tired very quickly and needs a lot of rest. So this is kept to a minimum.

Germany’s Bild newsaper reported that Schumacher is now able to respond to the sound of his wife Corinna’s voice.
There was no sign of his family at University Hospital Lausanne on Tuesday.

But Ms Kehm, looking pale and tired, was spotted talking to someone near the hospital entrance.
It is not known whether Schumacher is breathing spontaneously but it is believed that he will continue to be fed intravenously for some time to come.”
    - Darcy Christen, spokesman of the University Hospital of the Canton of Vaud
