Gibson Reveals New LMP2 Car, Significant Updates For Successful Chassis
    on 15/12/2014

    ELMS News

The Gibson brand is set to make a racing debut in 2015 as the firm launches a comprehensive upgrade to the existing Zytek chassis which will feature a host of improvements designed to keep the car at the front of the LMP2 grid.

It is the latest development of the ultra competitive Zytek chassis, which won its class at Le Mans in 2014, and in 2011. Eight of the last 10 European Le Mans Series races have also seen the chassis take pole position.

    ELMS_Silverstone_#38

An intensive CFD programme has been undertaken to improve the aerodynamic efficiency, increasing downforce and reducing drag, of what was, hitherto, the Zytek Z11SN.

Updates have also been included to ensure that the car complies with the latest ACO/FIA safety regulations, while further improvements have been made to its already impressive serviceability and reliability record. The numerous changes being homologated are possible within the cost cap rules since the car is now four years old.

To date a total of 14 chassis have been built, and since 2011 have been powered by the highly successful Gibson developed Nissan VK45 engine. With the change in company name from Zytek Engineering to Gibson Technology, the opportunity has now arisen to rebrand the car.

“Over the past few months a great deal of work has been done here at Gibson Technology on these updates, in conjunction with our two Le Mans winning customers Greaves and Jota,” said John Manchester Operations Director. “We look forward to continuing the strong working relationship with both teams again in 2015.”

In addition to updating its highly respected, open top chassis, Gibson is continuing to work on an LMP1/2 coupe in readiness for the release of the 2017 regulations. However, company Chairman Bill Gibson stated, “We are not yet willing to complete the design of the all new coupe until the 2017 regulations have been finalized by the ACO.”

Gibson remains one of the leading manufacturers of racecar engines in the world and will be sole supplier to the prestigious Renault FR3.5 Series for the fourth consecutive season as well as, again, powering the whole Auto GP and FA1 grids, in addition to numerous LMP2 teams.

Gibson’s announcement follows the upgrade to Oreca’s 03 at Le Mans this year and the confirmation to DSC by Jacques Nicolet at Interlagos that Onroak is to upgrade the Morgan open top LMP2 for 2015.

Gibson Upgrade For Greaves & Jota Zyteks
    on 17/12/2014 06:36.
Greaves Motorsport and Jota Sport have both confirmed to DSC that they will be campaigning the new Gibson Technology upgrade to their current Zytek chassis.

There is no final decision on the full designation of the updated car, known internally at Gibson as the 015S but both of the currently active customers for the Z11SN are clearly impressed enough to stay on board as others turn to the new generation coupes.

Jacob Greaves: “Greaves Motorsport are delighted to be part of the new programme. The existing car was highly competitive during this season but the opposition are very strong and are constantly improving. Gibson Technology has a track record second to none with their prototype customer race cars and we are confident that this new development will put us back at the head of the pack.”

HAND TO JOIN PRUETT IN NO. 01 FORD ECOBOOST/RILEY.

INDIANAPOLIS (December 16, 2014) – Seven-time IMSA Champions and five-time Rolex 24 At Daytona Winners Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) announced today partner Ford and their EcoBoost engine technology will serve as the primary sponsor of the No. 01 in the Prototype category for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season-long effort with drivers Scott Pruett and talented veteran road racer Joey Hand. Both Ford and Hand step into their new roles with the team as part of multi-year deals.

    NOTES OF INTEREST:

    • Ford’s Rich Sports Car History: Ford's history with sports car racing stretches back to the 1960's, with its legendary factory effort at the 24 Heures du Mans. Today's factory effort plays an important role in developing Ford Motor Company's EcoBoost technology. Ford's twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 raced to three wins with CGRFS, including a win in the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring, seven podiums and more than 15,000 endurance racing miles in its first season of TUDOR United SportsCar Championship competition in 2014. In fact, the Sebring win was Ford’s first overall win as a manufacturer since 1967.

    • Hand Finds a Home at CGRFS: Joey Hand, widely considered one of the best road racers in the world, returns in a full-time capacity after helping CGRFS win the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona with Pruett in his first of three appearances with the team (2011-2013 Rolex 24 At Daytonas). Hand led the most laps in the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona, leading 116 of the No. 01 car’s race-leading 231 laps. He led the race six times overall en route to the team’s fourth win in the sports car classic. Hand had previously been competing in the DTM series from 2012-2014 and had been in the American Le Mans Series from 2004-2011 where he won two 12 Hours of Sebring and the 2011 GT Driver Championship. Pruett and Hand enter the 2015 TUSC season with a combined 72 IMSA wins.

    • Pruett in the Record Books: Pruett is tied for the all-time record with five Rolex 24 At Daytona wins (1994, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013) and joins Hurley Haywood as the lone five-time Rolex 24 At Daytona Winners. He is the first American to score 12 major sports car championships - his closest competitor is the late Peter Gregg who has seven to his credit, and his previous titles include two IMSA GTO Titles (1986, 1988), one IMSA GT Endurance (1986) and three Trans-Am Championships (1987, 1994, 2003). Pruett continues to extend his record as the all-time leader in IMSA wins with 59 victories.

    QUOTEBOARD:

    Jamie Allison, Racing Director, Ford:
    • “The evolution of our Ford EcoBoost technology continues to be the major focus of our program for 2015. We look forward to continuing that climb with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series and we welcome Joey Hand to our program joining Scott Pruett as we compete for wins every race and a Ford championship.”

Chip Ganassi, Owner, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates:
    • “I think we had a good year with Ford in 2014 by winning three and could easily have won more so to now be partnered with them in even a bigger way makes all of us very happy. I think we have a great deal to look forward to. Also, we’ve had our eye on Joey for quite some time. He turned a lot of heads in our organization in 2011. I think he and Scott will complement each other on and off the track and we expect them to hit the ground running together in Daytona.”

Joey Hand, Driver, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates:
    • “What an opportunity. To say I’m thrilled to be joining this team would be an understatement. With the successes of Chip’s team in sports car racing, the great history of the No. 01 car and getting to team-up with a legend like Scott Pruett, I think Christmas came a little early for me this season. I had a great experience with the team in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and now here we are back together full-time in the TUDOR Untied SportsCar Championship. Daytona is right around the corner to kick off the season and I can’t wait to start working with Scott and the team. In all honesty, I’ve wanted to drive for this team since I was a little kid. I’m excited about my long-term future here and what we can potentially accomplish together as sports car racing continues to grow.”

Scott Pruett, Driver, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates:
    • “It’s been just an incredible ride the last 11 years with TELMEX and the partnership we’ve had. As a team we’ve accomplished so much, and a part of that success was a result of Memo Rojas and his contributions. The personal relationships formed will continue on. But now we begin a new chapter with the addition of Joey and our growing relationship with Ford. It all started for me with Ford back in the day and I’m thrilled to have them expand their partnership on our Prototype program. Joey and I literally grew up about 30 miles from each other in California. His previous experience with the team is invaluable, in that we know what he brings to the table and which should allow us to begin the season strong.”

AUDI ANNOUNCES OLIVER JARVIS AND RENÉ RAST IN 2015 DRIVER LINE UP

At the Audi Sport Finale at the Audi Forum Neckarsulm this evening the German manufacturer unveils the changes to its driver line up for the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Heures du Mans.

The only place that has become vacant due to the retirement of Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen will be filled – and, as usual at Audi, with a driver from the brand’s own young-driver promotion program: Oliver Jarvis (GB) will move up from the third Le Mans car into the WEC regular driver squad and contest the full WEC season in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

Jarvis, who celebrates his 31st birthday next month, takes the Audi Sport Team Joest seat of recently retired nine-time Le Mans winner Kristensen for the entire 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Cambridge driver has scored two third place finishes at Le Mans after making his debut in the twice-around-the-clock marathon in 2012 but has not previously contested a full WEC season. “It’s an early Christmas present and at the same time a fulfilment of a dream,” commented Jarvis at the announcement in Germany last night (WED).

“I’ve got some big shoes to fill in replacing Tom, a nine-time winner at Le Mans and last year’s world sportscar champion, but I look forward to rising to the challenge. I joined Audi in 2008 and raced in DTM but it was always my dream to compete at Le Mans which I fulfilled in 2012. But to now contest the full WEC championship and fight for a world title is just amazing and something I strived to achieve.”

In the WEC, Audi continues to rely on Audi Sport Team Joest as in the past. The most successful Le Mans team of all time will be fielding two further-developed Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars in all eight races. An additional R18 will be entered in the 6-hour race at Spa and in the Le Mans 24 Hours, with GT driver René Rast (D) completing the line-up for these events.

    2015 WEC driver teams

    Marcel Fässler (CH)/André Lotterer (D)/Benoît Tréluyer (F)
Loïc Duval (F)/Lucas di Grassi (BR)/Oliver Jarvis (GB)
    Filipe Albuquerque (P)/Marco Bonanomi (I)/René Rast (D)

FIA WEC 2014 BY THE NUMBERS, LMP1

Toyota Motorsport and drivers Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi take their first World Endurance Championship titles.

5 teams started at least one FIA WEC race in 2014, 4 started all of them (Audi, Porsche, Toyota and Rebellion) with the Lotus LMP team starting 5.

6 different makes of car started races (the five above plus Rebellion’s Lolas at Silverstone)

4 different makes of engine featured (Audi, Porsche, Toyota and AER) with three different hybrid systems in the LMP1 Hs, and three different engine configurations too, V4 Turbo, V6 TDI and normally aspirated V8.

    We had 12 different race cars on WEC grids this season racing under 10 different numbers, 3 x Audi #1,2 & 3, 2 x Porsche #14 & 20, 2 x Toyota #7 & 8, 2 x Rebellion (Lola and Rebellion R-Ones #11 & 12, 1 x Lotus CLM AER #9)
All three factory teams won races in 2014.

Toyota won 5 races (4 wins for the #8, 1 for #7), Audi won twice (both for the #2 car) and Porsche once (#14)

Toyota scored four pole positions (3 for #8, 1 for #7) with Porsche also scoring four (the #14 Porsche scoring three poles and the #20 one).

The #8 Toyota only finished off the podium once all season (Bahrain).

The #8 and #7 Toyotas, and the #12 Rebellion were the only LMP1 cars to score at every round in the overall drivers points standings.

32 different drivers scored in the Drivers World Championship in 2014.

Porsche’s two driver squads stayed stable through the whole season as did the #2 Audi.

The #1 Audi saw Marc Gene sub for the injured Loic Duval at Le Mans, the #8 Toyota lost Nicolas Lapierre after COTA, the #7 Toyota saw Mike Conway substitute for Kazuki Nakajima three times.

Three further drivers were entered in WEC races but neither raced nor scored (Simon Trummer, Nathaniel Berthon and Oliver Jarvis).

Swiss drivers finished 1st, 2nd and third in the 2014 points standings, Seb Buemi winning the title ahead of Marcel Fassler and Neel Jani!

    LMP1-L

Only Rebellion won races in LMP1-L, the #12 crew taking five with the sister #13 winning three times.

The #12 crew finished a season best fourth overall twice, at Silverstone with the Lola Toyota and at Le Mans with the Rebellion R-One.

Only Shanghai saw all three LMP1-Ls finish the race.

The best result for the #9 Lotus CLM came on its debut at COTA with second.

The #13 Rebellion crew did not finish a race until winning at Fuji.

Rebellion stayed with the same crews all season.

The #12 crew finished 10th overall in the Drivers World Championship scoring the same points total as the #20 Porsche crew but losing out to a better overall best finish for the Porsche.

The CLM’s AER V6 is the first non hybridised turbo engine in LMP1 in the WEC.

    WEC Records

Audi are still the Manufacturer with the most overall wins in the WEC over its three year history (12), Toyota though now have 11 with Porsche a single win.

Marcel Fassler, Andre Lottrer and Benoit Treluyer now have a WEC record 8 overall race wins, Nicolas Lapierre has 6 wins and 2014 World Champions Sebastien Buemi and Ant Davidson have 5 along with Alex Wurz. Tom Kristensen finishes his career with 4 together with Loic Duval and Allan McNish.

18 different drivers have now taken at least one overall WEC race win. Romain Dumas is the only driver with a race win for two different factory teams, a win apiece for Audi (Spa 2012), and Porsche (Interlagos 2014).

Mike Conway and Stephane Sarrazin are the only men with race wins in both LMP1 and LMP2 – Marc Gene has had an LMP1 win and a podium in LMP2. Mathias Beche has won in LMP2 and LMP1-L.

The all-time top points scores in the WEC are now the 2014 #2 Audi crew: Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer with 448.75 points, they overhauled Tom Kristensen’s total during the 2014 season (438).

SAFER’ Barriers For The Porsche Curves
    on 22/12/2014

The Porsche Curves section of the Circuit de 24 Heures was built in 1972 in an attempt by the ACO not only to create a permanent track for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but also in order to bypass the ultra-fast and dangerous Maison Blanche section.

As many DSC readers will know the Porsche Curves are a series of four corners beginning with a bumpy right-hand curve followed by a narrow double-left (also called the Virage du Pont / Bridge Corner). It ends with the right-hand corner, where Marc Gené’s Peugeot 908 and Loic Duval’s Audi R18 violently collided with the track’s protective walls, in 2008 and 2014, respectively.

The Porsche Curves are considered by most drivers to be one of the best and most challenging sections of the 24 Hours of Le Mans racetrack, partly due to the fast entry/exit speeds they allow. Some like to call them ‘men’s corners’.

On 4 December, DSC revealed that the Syndicat Mixte des 24h du Mans (the public organisation in charge of managing large investments for the track) had budgeted close to 600,000 euros to revamp this section in 2015 while still preserving the original design. The Syndicat has now disclosed the following details surrounding the project:

    - First right-hand corner

810 m2 / 30% of the existing gravel trap will be replaced by a Paul Ricard-style abrasive bitumen coating. This will give drivers an additional sanction-free run-off area on the outside of the curve. The back of the gravel trap will also be equipped with tyre walls and FIA protective fences covering a distance of 200 metres.

    - Double-left corners

The exterior of the first left-hand corner exit (before the bridge) will be covered by a 1-2 metre highly abrasive strip of bitumen. The width of the second left-hand corner (after the bridge) will be expanded by 2-3 meters over a distance of approximately 250 meters, as the grass will be replaced by a highly abrasive coating of bitumen.

Throughout this double-left corner section, the Syndicat will also introduce SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barriers over a distance of 220 meters. It is the first time this technology will be used in La Sarthe.

These barriers are commonly used in the United States, in particular on Indycar and NASCAR tracks. They are made of a high-strength tubular steel skin that distributes the impact load to energy-absorbing foam cartridges.

Over the past ten years, this technology has demonstrated the capacity to reduce the severity of an impact and provide the drivers with additional protection in case of a crash.

    - Final right-hand corner

The curbs of the corner’s entry/interior will be extended by approximately 20 meters (Vallelunga ‘5 cm’ type).

Work on the Porsche Curves is set to begin in February 2015 and is expected to be completed by mid-May 2015.

    IMSA: Series tweaks PC specifications
    Tuesday, 23 December 2014

Entrants in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship’s PC class will enter 2015 with three significant changes to their ORECA FLM09-Chevrolets. After PC drivers spent most of the 2014 season entangled with GT Le Mans and GT Daytona cars, IMSA will unveil alterations to the PC class at the Jan. 9-11 Roar Before the 24 test at Daytona with the specific goal of creating separation between the spec prototypes and the speedy GT cars. Provided the tweaks work as intended, they would be adopted for the entire season.
“The goal is to create more differentiation between the PC cars and the GT cars, so the first thing we’ll do is remove the [minimum] ride height restriction,” IMSA technical regulations VP Scot Elkins told RACER. “And we have removed the air restrictor from the PC cars to help make passing the GT cars easier.”

With ride height now open, teams can lower the cars and improve braking and cornering performance, and increase downforce figures at tracks where straight-line speed isn’t a key to victory.

The third change is more significant, and involves new camshafts to alter the power and torque characteristics of Chevy’s LS3 V8 engine. Championship-winning PC entrant Bobby Oergel believes the combined changes will benefit his clients, and the series as a whole.

"I’ve been pushing for about three years to get the cams changed to have less torque and more power, and as a group, the PC owners got on a call and we all agreed this is something we wanted,” said Oergel, who owns PR1 Motorsports. “Then we spoke with Katech, who builds the engines, and they said they could make it happen.
“The series approved it, so with the new cams, it will help engine life and with less torque, it will help the gentlemen drivers handle the car off the corners. And with more peak power from the cams and without the restrictor, we’ll have better top speed. It should be great. It should be a nicer solution for everyone involved.”

    Indianapolis open to 2016 date

    Monday, 29 December 2014
    Marshall Pruett

The FIA World Endurance Championship is interested in expanding its presence in North America and the spiritual birthplace of American motor racing could be the perfect host.

The FIA WEC and Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Doug Boles met last summer to discuss the possibility of holding a future round at the legendary circuit, and could continue the discussion next month in Detroit.

“Sports cars are something we’re taking a serious look at,” Boles told RACER. “We’d love to have sports cars back at the Speedway; it would need to be a standalone race, and after having the Grand-Am series here for the first time in 2012 and 2013, and that turning into the IMSA series this year – all as part of the NASCAR weekend.

"But it wasn’t fair for them to come in and fit their event into essentially a day and a half and race on Friday. We’d really want to see sports cars have a full weekend of their own at Indianapolis.”

With the Brickyard set to host the 100th running of the Indy 500 in 2016, it would be the perfect year for sports cars to make their return to Indiana. The WEC held its first race in America at Circuit of The Americas in 2013, sharing the event with IMSA, and with continued growth on their return this year, the “Lonestar Le Mans” event is gaining traction in Texas.

Boles says he would be open to one or both series coming together for an event using the repaved and reconfigured IMS road course.

“We haven’t focused completely on what it would be; we’d welcome the WEC or IMSA, or both, and we’d definitely want to do it in 2016, if we can make it happen, because we’re celebrating the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and with so much history and innovation surrounding the track, high-tech sports cars would fit perfectly into everything we’re working towards a little over a year from now,” he added.
Canada and Mexico have also been cited by the WEC as possible hosts for a second event in North America.

The WEC’s LMP1-H prototypes rank as the most advanced road racing cars on the planet – surpassing Formula 1 – and would fit nicely in or around the 2016 Indy 500 where IndyCar’s small-displacement turbocharged V6s, aero kits, and an initiative to break Arie Luyendyk’s four-lap average speed of 237.498mph should draw great interest to the Speedway.

If a WEC round at Indianapolis does land on the 2016 calendar, a slight tweak to the standard six-hour race length could be on the cards to fit the 100th Indy 500 anniversary celebrations. The first Indy 500, held in 1911 and won by Ray Harroun, lasted six hours and 42 minutes.

Rob just a quick question and not really related to this thread but I didn't know where to ask it! I want to go to the Ferrari racing days in Spa next year but if I google the calender it says Test Days and not Ferrari racing days so my question is what the difference between these two events are?
