    Porsche’s 2015 919 Hybrid, Launch Details

The 2015 919 Hybrid will be the very first LMP1 to race at the 8mJ level.

The cars will race in the red, white and black liveries at Le mans only, the revised white livery will feature on the cars for the remainder of the 2015 FIA WEC.

The 2015 919 is equipped with a 2-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine with an output of more than 500 hp, which powers the rear axle, and an electric motor with over 400 hp that drives the front wheels and gets its electricity from two energy recovery systems.

A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery temporarily stores converted braking energy from the front axle and converted thermodynamic energy from the exhaust tract.

The major task has been weight reduction to offset the weight increase inherent in the achievement of the 8mJ class

    Cars are numbered:

#17 (Red car for LM) Bernhard, Hartley, Webber – Full Season WEC
#18 (Black car for LM) Lieb, Dumas, Jani – Full Season WEC
#19 (White car for LM) Hulkenberg, Bamber, Tandy – Spa and LM24 only

    Porsche say car numbers reflect:

#17: Starting number and colour are a tribute to the Porsche that claimed the first of their 16 overall Le Mans victories, the Porsche 917KH

#18: “a symbol of the close technical kinship between the 99 Hybrid and Porsche’s 918 Spyder supercar – the 918 that set the ew record for a street legal car at the Nurburgring was also back (and was also driven by Marc Lieb!)

#19: Presumably because it comes after 18!

Yes I agree with you, Rob! To be honest I would really like to see an AF Corse in Giallo Modena or Blu Pozzi too!

    News Release

FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMP1 Preview

2015 Porsche 919 Hybrid – Proven Base Was Extensively Developed

Stuttgart. At the Paul Ricard Circuit in France, Porsche presented the second generation of its Le Mans Prototype 919 Hybrid racecar as a technical evolution in a three-color concept. Porsche also confirmed it will switch to the highest of the four energy categories in the LMP1 class. The performance of the energy recovery system could be increased by around one-third as compared to 2014. This means the 919 Hybrid is competitive to race in the 8-megajoule category. The new revolutionary WEC regulations, which went into effect in 2014, call for the use of powerful and innovative hybrid drive systems – and this was actually the main reason why Porsche decided to return to the world of top-level motor racing.

The Porsche team will use two of its extensively developed technology platforms in all eight races of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The cars will be white and will also carry the "Porsche Intelligent Performance" motto on their bodywork. This also applies to the team’s third 919 Hybrid, which will race at Spa-Francorchamps on May 2. However, for the high point of the season – the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13–14, 2015 – the team will send a white, a black and a red Porsche 919 Hybrid onto the circuit.

Wolfgang Hatz, board member for research and development at Porsche AG, stated the following at the presentation of the LMP1 prototypes in southern France: "The LMP1 program at Porsche focuses on extensively networked cooperation between the engineers who work on our innovative drive system concept."

The WEC regulations are designed to ensure that the most efficient car wins. The automotive industry in general must adopt exactly this approach to remain viable. Porsche already offers three plug-in hybrid production sports cars today. “This sets us apart from the competition and we plan to grow even stronger in this segment," said Hatz. "To this end, we need substantial expertise within the company. The tremendous pressure to perform in the top LMP1 category means our development specialists for production cars learn a lot in a very short time. On the other hand, young engineers receive top-quality training at turbo speed, and this knowledge can later be applied very effectively in series production. Learning from the race track for everyday roads is a tradition at Porsche. Therefore it makes perfect sense to create at least a partial link between our Le Mans prototypes and our motor racing history by means of the colors we use."

The car entry number and colors of the red prototype are a tribute to the Porsche that, in 1970, captured the first of what are now a total of 16 overall victories for the brand at Le Mans. No other marque has claimed so many victories in what is believed to be the world’s most demanding endurance race. The base colors of the Porsche 917 KH ("short-tail") in "Salzburg Design" that won the race 45 years ago on June 14, 1970 was also red. The winning drivers then were Hans Herrmann from Germany, who is now 87, and Richard Attwood from the UK, who is 74 today. In 2015, at the 83rd running of the classic race at Le Mans, the red prototype with car Number 17 will be driven by Timo Bernhard, 34 (Germany), Brendon Hartley, 25 (New Zealand) and Mark Webber, 38 (Australia).

The black LMP1 with car Number 18 is a symbol of the close technical kinship between the Porsche 919 Hybrid racing car and the Porsche 918 Spyder super sports car, which is also equipped with a hybrid drive. It was also a black 918 that on September 4, 2013 set a new record for a street-legal production sports car by completing a lap of more than 12.43-miles/20-kilometers on the North Loop of the Nürburgring in six-minutes and 57-seconds. The record-setting lap was driven by Marc Lieb, 34, from Germany. Lieb will also drive the black 919 in Le Mans this year – together with Romain Dumas, 37, (France) and Neel Jani, 31 (Switzerland).

The team’s third car – the white 919 Hybrid, Number 19 – will be competing in Le Mans in the livery Porsche chose for its return to Prototype One racing after a 16-year absence. White, which is a traditional color for racing cars from Germany, will also be used with the two Porsche 911 RSR factory cars that will race in the GTE Pro Class. At Le Mans, the third 919 will be driven by Earl Bamber, 24 (New Zealand), F 1 driver Nico Hülkenberg, 27 (Germany) and Nick Tandy, 30 (UK). Bamber and Tandy are regulars in the Porsche North America “works” entries in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, further linking the livery to the GT entries.

Evolution of the 919: more efficient, more rigid, easier to handle, lighter and more robust
Although the basic concept of the Le Mans Prototype One (LMP1) class entry was retained in the second-generation, virtually every component on the Porsche 919 Hybrid was refined for its second season of international endurance competition. The ambitious goals for the next evolutionary stage were to make the vehicle more efficient, more rigid, easier to handle, lighter and yet more robust.

The 919 is equipped with a 2-litre V4 turbocharged gasoline engine with an output of more than 500 hp, which powers the rear axle, and an electric motor with over 400 hp that drives the front wheels and gets its electricity from two energy-recovery systems. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery temporarily stores converted braking energy from the front axle as well as converted exhaust-gas energy. The reworked drive system is more powerful and more efficient than before. The Porsche 919 Hybrid was homologated for the top energy-recovery category (8 mega joules for one lap in Le Mans) for the first time in 2015.

The vehicle’s lower weight and improved overall rigidity, as well as optimization of the suspension and aerodynamics, improved the handling of the endurance racing car. Despite the significant weight reductions, the engineers were still able to make certain key components more robust.

The 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) begins on April 12
Following this week’s WEC “Prologue” – the test that will be conducted with the entire WEC field on March 27 and 28 at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France – the 2015 WEC will kick off on April 12 at Great Britain’s Silverstone Circuit. All WEC races, with the exception of Le Mans, will be six hours in length. The championship will move to Spa in Belgium on May 2 and to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13–14. Germany’s Nürburgring on August 30 is a new addition to the WEC. The Championship will then leave Europe and head to Austin, Texas (USA) for the sole North America round at the Circuit of the Americas on September 19. The next two races will be held in Japan at Fuji on October 11 and Shanghai, China on November 1. The finale will take place in Bahrain on November 21.

The racing team led by Fritz Enzinger (Austria), Vice President LMP1, is based at the Porsche research and development center in Weissach, Germany, and has more than 230 employees. Well over a hundred of them are engineers who work for Technical Director Alexander Hitzinger (Germany). Team Director Andreas Seidl (Germany) oversees all operational issues.

"Everyone in the team is looking forward excitedly to our second season," said Enzinger. "We drove the new Porsche 919 Hybrid over a total of 26,675 lonely test kilometers [16,675-miles] at four different race tracks. Now, we’re very much looking forward to meeting the entire FIA WEC field during the prologue here at Paul Ricard."

Note: The complete press kit that describes the technical development of the Porsche 919 Hybrid, and which also includes driver portraits, team-manager profiles and an extensive range of additional information, is available in PDF format from the Porsche press database: https://presse.porsche.de. Photographs and video material are also available at the website.

Pre-season preparation for Porsche Team Manthey

With the prologue on the Paul Ricard Circuit on Friday at Le Castellet in southern France, the countdown for the start of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC on 12 April in Silverstone began.

In addition to the Porsche works drivers Jörg Bergmeister (Germany), Michael Christensen (Denmark), Wolf Henzler (Germany), Richard Lietz (Austria), Frédéric Makowiecki (France) and Patrick Pilet (France), all contesting the WEC including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Porsche 911 RSR, Porsche Junior Sven Müller (Germany) also takes part in Le Castellet. He makes his race debut at round two on May 2 in Spa-Francorchamps with the 911 RSR.

“Our main priority at this prologue is to get the whole team back up to speed after the winter break,” says Marco Ujhasi, overall project leader GT works motorsport. “In terms of the whole process and the organisation, our focus is on preparing for the start of the season in Silverstone. For our drivers, it’s about getting back out on the track and for some of them to adjust to their new teammates. We’re competing this year with slightly modified aerodynamics on the 911 RSR. Despite the strong wind which is typical for Le Castellet, we aim to try and find out at this test just how good these changes work.”

911 RSR: onsequent lightweight design and sophisticated aerodynamics

The Porsche 911 RSR, based on the seventh generation of the iconic 911 sports car, is characterised by a consequent lightweight design and sophisticated aerodynamics. At its first appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, the winning racer from Weissach scored a sensational double victory in the GTE-Pro class. Last year it won America’s three most prestigious long distance classics: the Daytona 24 Hours, the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Victories at the WEC races in Silverstone and Shanghai also went to the 911 RSR.

Its six-cylinder boxer engine in the rear has a capacity of 3996 cc and produces around 345 kW (470 hp) with a restrictor. During the winter months at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach, many details were modified on the Porsche 911 RSR, which is liveried with the wording “Porsche Intelligent Performance” shown from a bird’s eye perspective. The revamped aerodynamics at the front and the adapted chassis kinematics ensure enhanced balance and improved control at its handling limits. Thanks to minor tweaks, the reliability of the drivetrain was further improved. Single point refuelling ensures additional safety in the pit lane: The refuelling system utilises one hose for both filling and venting, leaving only one refueller to work on the car.

WEC, Porsche Team Manthey, Teamchef Olaf Manthey, Sven Mueller, (l-r), Le Castellet, 2015, Porsche AG

For 2015, the Porsche Manthey squad fields a pair of 911 RSR sporting the starting numbers 91 and 92 in the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC. Again this year, the 24-hour classic at Le Mans is the ultimate highlight of the season. At round two of the season on the challenging storied circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium’s Ardennes, Porsche Junior Sven Müller contests his maiden race for the Porsche Manthey team with the 911 RSR. In just his second year as a junior, Müller also takes on the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in which he won the Monza race in 2014, and as last year’s rookie champion will also contest most rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.

“By giving Sven Müller the chance to drive at Spa, we’re actively following our idea of supporting young drivers,” says Porsche’s Head of Motorsport Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser. “He performed very well last year in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and the Carrera Cup Deutschland and is now making the logical step of gaining his first experience with the works-911 RSR.”

“It’s a dream come true,” says Sven Müller. “To have this chance to test the 911 RSR here in Le Castellet is a great experience, especially since it’s an official test with the competition here as well. This prologue is run like a race weekend and this gives me a good idea of how everything goes at a WEC round. It’s really awesome to be allowed to drive my first race in the 911 RSR at Spa. I’m so excited. But right now I have to concentrate on the test and I’ll try my utmost to justify Porsche’s confidence in me by performing well here in Le Castellet.”

    KCMG Purchase Second Oreca 05

Amongst the work underway in a busy assembly shop was a brand new Oreca 05 Coupe, the third car in the production run destined for “an existing Oreca customer.”

A wee bit of detective work soon established that the car is set to be the second 05 acquired by Paul Ip’s KCMG outfit.

More interestingly still the car is set to be delivered in the weeks before the Le Mans 24 Hours where the team have a second entry, currently second in the reserve list behind the Riley Technologies GTE Am Viper.

Beyond a potential Le Mans outing the car is set to contest an as yet unannounced programme of selected races in the FIA WEC.

The team’s lead car, entered for the full FIA WEC meanwhile is set to be a big fan favourite with a stunning electric blue livery.

Fillon/ Neveu Confirm 2017 LMP2 Regs To Retain Open Tyre Competition

In a briefing this evening at Paul Ricard, Gerard Neveu and ACO President Pierre Fillon confirmed that the proposed changes to the 2017 LMP2 regulations will be communicated by the ACO in the coming weeks.

One change to the initial proposal tabled to the Manufacturers at Daytona in January is that the proposed single tyre maker for the FIA WEC/ ELMS has been changed to a proposal of retention of open tyre competition.

The FIA World Motorsport Council voted last week to enable the new regulations to move to a single engine supplier, the timing of that decision was apparently a surprise to both the ACO and FIA WEC!

No information was offered on any move within the proposals over the restriction of chassis supply to four licensed suppliers which was tabled at the January meeting.

    EVERY GRAMME COUNTS!

    27/03/2015

One of the most intriguing regulation changes in 2015 concerns the weight of the drivers in the LMP1 class.

All of the LMP1 entrants must declare the minimum weight of each driver entered in each race.

If the average weight of the drivers is 80kg or more no action is necessary, but if the average weight of the driver line-up in each LMP1 car is less than 80kg, driver ballast must be added to the car which will equal 80kg minus the actual average weight of the drivers.

This will directly affect some of the line-ups, most notably the #2 Toyota TS 040 which includes Alex Wurz who at 186 metres tall is naturally one of the heavier of the drivers in the LMP1 class. His weight is around the 78-80kgs mark.

“As a heavier driver there is obviously still a disadvantage in essence personally but for a team it will not be much fairer,” said Wurz. “Over the years it has become more critical as the tyres have got smaller, so the contact patch is reduced. So, if you run from ‘A’ to ‘B’ and you put on a 20kgs rucksack you need more energy otherwise you are slower, end of story. The ACO saw this and made this rule for the average weight. I think it is a very good direction because ultimately it is just laws of physics.

“Overall I think it is good for motorsport in general because racing should be inclusive and not exclusive. It shouldn’t matter how tall, heavy or where you are from, it should always be about the talent, whether that is from karting up to this level of competition.”

    PORSCHE LEAD AFTERNOON SESSION

    27/03/2015 - 18h03

Porsche continued to lead the times in the four hour afternoon Prologue test session at Circuit Paul Ricard today.

After setting a blistering pace this morning Marc Lieb continued an impressive turn of speed in the #18 Porsche 919 Hybrid. The German eclipsed his best time from this morning by taking off a further 1.3 seconds to register a fastest lap of 1m37.965s.

The time set by Lieb was over three seconds faster than the best time from the 2014 Prologue, which was a 1m41.289, set by Brendon Hartley.

The No.17 Porsche driven by Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley took second in the quicker afternoon running. Webber set a 1m38.552 late on in the session in what were sunny but very windy conditions.

Third was the No.7 Audi R18 e-tron quattro lapping just under 0.5s faster than the sister #8 car. Audi undertook much less track running than their category rivals today as they evaluated many different aspects of their new-look LMP1-H car.

Toyota Racing continued to add many laps on to their significantly developed TS 040 Hybrid. The reigning champions completed 132 laps this afternoon in total, placing fifth and sixth overall.

The KCMG ORECA 05 led the way initially in LMP2 with class newcomer Nick Tandy getting to grips with his new challenge in an impressive manner. The British racer will compete for all except the Spa and Le Mans rounds of the WEC this season. He set a best lap of 1m48.722 which was good enough for third place. Tandy's time was bettered by Christian Klien in the Team SARD Morand Morgan-Evo as he set a 1m48.325 late in the session.

Sam Bird in the G-Drive Racing Ligier also slipped in a late time with a 1m48.687s lap to go P2 in class.

Porsche Team Manthey ended the session 1-2 in LMGTE Pro class with its two Porsche 911 RSRs.

The Dempsey-Proton Racing LMGTE Am example driven by Klaus Bachler/Christian Ried and Khaled Al Qubaisi set the best time of 1m58.959s in the afternoon session.

The ‘Prologue’ test continues this evening with a two hour night time session starting at 21.00 local time.

AF Corse’s new Ferrari livery makes its track debut

Le Castellet, 27 March – The final two days of pre-season testing for the World Endurance Championship are taking place at the Paul Ricard circuit, prior to the opening round of the season at Silverstone, on 12th April. Ferrari, the GT Constructors World Champions, have got five cars running, three entered by AF Corse, the reigning champions in both teams and drivers in the GTE Pro category with Gimmi Bruni and Tony Vilander.

New livery. The Paul Ricard test has provided the backdrop for the Amato Ferrari-run team to present its new livery for the 2015 season, which features a touch of blue being added to the traditional white, red and green, and the black and yellow. The livery was unveiled in the pit garage of the four drivers in GTE Pro, including therefore Bruni and Vilander, who this season will again team up in the number 51 car, alongside Davide Rigon and James Calado, who for the second consecutive year will be at the wheel of the number 71 458 Italia.

Three Am cars. Also running at Paul Ricard are three 458 Italias entered in the GTE Am category. Driving AF Corse’s number 83 car are François Perrodo, Emmanuel Collard and Rui Aguas while at the wheel of the 72 car entered by the SMP Racing team will be the Russians Victor Shaytar, Aleksey Basov alongside the official Ferrari driver, Italy’s Andrea Bertolini. The third 458 Italia is entered by the JMW Motorsport team for Michael Avenatti and Jakub Giermaziak. The first day of testing also includes a night session, with tomorrow’s final day being open to the general public.

    NEWS ALERT
    LE CASTELLET - 28 March 2015
    Hello Mr Robert Allum,

PORSCHE ON TOP AGAIN AS PROLOGUE CONCLUDES

    28/03/2015 - 17h24

The track action came to an end this afternoon at The Prologue, the official pre-season test days at Circuit Paul Ricard in the south of France, with Porsche laying down an initial marker for its rivals in the 2015 WEC.

The next time the WEC field will be in action will be at Silverstone in two weeks’ time where the true pace and performance hierarchy will be seen for the first time.

Today’s running began with a four-hour session held in cool, sunny and thankfully less windy conditions than yesterday.

Timo Bernhard set the fastest time with a 1m39.157s lap as the teams elected for longer runs this morning. The German slightly outpaced Audi Sport Team Joest’s André Lotterer by 0.356s.

In LMP2 it was the #26 G-Drive Racing Ligier JS P2-Nissan at the top of the times, as Julien Canal turned in a 1m47.760s lap. Canal’s time just beat reigning ELMS champion Nelson Panciatici’s 1m47. 950s time in the Signatech Alpine-Nissan.

Fernando Rees claimed the top spot in LMGTE Pro, taking the Aston Martin Vantage he shares with Alex MacDowell and Richie Stanaway this season to P1 in class with a 1m57.331s.

The LMGTE Am best was set by Stuart Hall in the #96 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8. The British racer peaked on a 1m57.116, which was his best lap of the test so far.

After ‘The Avener’s’ beat-thumping lunchtime festivities concluded most the cars returned to the track.

Porsche Team again enjoyed a 1-2 at the top of the screens with the #18 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Neel Jani outpacing the #17 sister car, with Timo Bernhard in the cockpit, by just 0.041s.

The two new-look Audi R18 e-tron quattros again placed third and fourth with Marcel Fässler setting a time just 0.407s adrift of the leading Porsche. Lucas Di Grassi set the fourth best time – 1m40.153s - for the #8 Audi Sport Team Joest entry.

The session was shortened by 15 minutes after Mike Conway stopped the #2 Toyota TS 040 HYBRID out on the track after an incident with the #51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Toni Vilander.

G-Drive again led the way in LMP2 but this time it was the #28 G-Drive Racing Ligier-Nissan which was quickest. Colombian driver Gustavo Yacaman, who shares the cockpit with Pipo Derani and Ricardo Gonzalez, set the time of 1m48.588 to lead the # 43 Team SARD Morand car, driven by Tristan Vautier, by just under 0.3s.

Aston Martin Racing again claimed the best time in the LMGTE class with Marco Sørensen continuing to accrue valuable testing miles as he gets ready for his endurance racing debut. The Dane set a best time of 1m57.675 in the #95 car.

Dempsey-Proton Racing finished a very encouraging test at Circuit Paul Ricard to lead the field in LMGTE Am. A 1m58.473 set by Klaus Bachler was just under a second quicker than the #83 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia.

The appetites of WEC drivers, teams, media and fans alike has been well and truly whetted by two days of track action. All that is left to be said are three very special words. Bring on Silverstone!

    Statement from Nissan (update)
March 29th, 2015 by Laurent Mercier

After the terrible events during yesterday’s VLN race, Nissan is pleased to have received information that the two injured spectators have been released from hospital. Jann Mardenborough has completed a series of medical tests and has also been released from hospital. Naturally he is very distressed about the outcome of yesterday’s accident.

The vehicle has been impounded by the German authorities and Nissan has offered full cooperation in their investigation.

Everyone at Nissan would like to again extend their deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and to the spectators who were hurt. Nissan would also like to thank everyone for the support they have shown for the fans involved, the team and for Jann Mardenborough.
