WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP – BIRD AND RIGON LEAD THE PACK AT SILVERSTONE ON THE FERRARI 488 GTE
Bird and Rigon lead the pack at Silverstone on the Ferrari 488 GTE

Silverstone, 16 April – Two sides qualifying for the new 488 GTE which captured the pole position in its début race with Sam Bird and Davide Rigon on AF Corse car No. 71, while crew number 51 of Gianmaria “Gimmi” Bruni and James Calado will start from the back of the grid due to a technical problem. Difficult session for the 458 Italia number 83 of AF Corse, competing in the GTE-Am class, which qualified in fifth place. It should be noted that driving rain and even snow falling on the track characterised the morning free practice, skipped by almost all racers.

GTE-Pro. In GTE-Pro class, James Calado and Davide Rigon, who last year were teammates on the 458 Italia number 71, took the first shift on cars 51 and 71 respectively. James clocked 2’11”764 in the first lap and then lowered the time to 2’11”589 on the following lap. Davide started out more cautiously, at 2’12”991, but chipped away over a second on the next lap: 2’11”900. The two cars then came into the box to change drivers: Bruni took the controls of the 488 GTE number 51, while Rigon passed the wheel to Bird. The English driver, in his first race on wet surface with a GT car, clocked 2’12”981 and was unable to improve on it. However the resulting overall time of 2’12”440 was enough for first place. On the other side of the garage “Gimmi” on car number 51, experienced a technical problem, which is yet to be analysed, but which led the team to call the car back to the box as a precaution. As Bruni did not record a qualifying time, car number 51 will start from the back of the grid.

GTE-Am. In GTE-Am class, the 458 Italia of AF Corse team driven by Emmanuel Collard, François Perrodo and Rui Aguas (the only Ferrari in the field) did not have an easy session. Collard went off the wet track immediately at turn number 4 and had to go back to the box to have the car checked. Later the crew was found to have exceeded the speed limit in the pit lane and its final overall time was therefore set at 2’20”131, which put the car in fifth place on the grid. The 6 Hours of Silverstone, first race of the World Endurance Championship (WEC), will start at 12 local time (1 p.m. CET).

Control issues blamed for Toyota’s qualifying woes

Toyota has revealed that control issues with its complex new TS050 Hybrid meant it couldn’t fulfil its potential in qualifying for the opening round of the FIA WEC at Silverstone.

Having impressed in free practice, when it lapped on a similar pace to the Audis, Toyota suffered problems immediately in the damp qualifying session.

Both Mike Conway and Anthony Davidson radioed in with issues on their outlaps, with Davidson the worst affected as he could only manage a laptime 10 seconds off the pace.

“The issues we had were pretty major and not expected – they should be ironed out in the dry conditions,” said Davidson.

“I think we ended up where would have ended up anyway without out problems. Our car isn’t working brilliantly in the wet, it’s the first time we’ve run it in the wet in anger so we expected some issues.

“You have to learn from these days, but you want to park it and move on!

“Hopefully, if everything goes well tomorrow and the controls were working fine on the car – because it’s incredibly complex – then we’ll be in the race, I reckon. Nobody knows what the pecking order really is.

“We still have potentially an ill-handling car, but it’s such early days. It’s hard to find the window where you want to be in. I must’ve changed a million controls out there from the start of this weekend. We know we’re on the back foot.”

    Conway explains his issues

Toyota teammate Conway in the #6 sister car qualified fifth, despite his problems, but was still some 5s off the pace of the Audis.

“We had some system issues with the car, some control problems – when things aren’t altogether it affects the laptime quite a lot,” said Conway. “When we left pitlane it just wasn’t running well.

“Basically everything just wasn’t correctly input into the car. Not much we could do – it was pretty average. And when it’s not running well, you don’t get the right tyre temperature. But fifth and sixth is OK, but looking at the laptimes I was like ‘whaaaat?!’ – we were 10s quicker than this yesterday.

“Porsche looks strong, but we’ve definitely got the pace to be there if we can get everything working right.”

    Fantastic race for our teams!
#51 recovered from last grid position and a stop and go penalty up to 2nd position!
Our cars were the only ones in 1:59s and even 1:58s. At times 3-4 seconds per lap faster than competion.
488 is gorgeous and very fast.

    Also GtAm won by AFCorse.
What a good start of the season!

was brilliant, will upload pictures later/tomorrow. Was in AF Corse pits for last 2 hours. Spoke to James, before race and they were thinking of doing the penalty at end of race to make a point. He said they will make 4th and i said podium and laughed. Spoke to Gimmi aswell just before his last stint. He was on fire, both of them were. #71 crew flawless all race.

Hugely disappointed with yesterday. MW did a mega job getting the car to the lead, car was awesome and we were stretching it. I had high speed contact with a GT car before the 3 hour mark. Passing traffic with more than 50km/h speed difference is never straight forward but very easy for critics to point fingers. It is normal for the prototype cars to pass around the outside of turn 2 as the normal racing line is just half track to make the braking for the next tight right. It's my job as a LMP1 driver to read the car in front and get around safely, I didn't. It is of course the right of the car in front to take what ever line they want. It all happened very quick and In hindsight I would have done it differently! I will learn from this experience.
Team spirit could not be higher on car #1 and I thank the entire Porsche team for the job they did yesterday. Not the result we wanted but Myself, Timo and Mark stand together and will fight back in Spa.

Amato, he signed my #51 model aswell. We, met Gimmi and James outside pits, they were talking to Luca, their race engineer. The garage doors opened, Gimmi came over for picture, signed model we had chat and said coming in? as we walked to pits, Gimmi said to the mechanics, they with me and we were in. We were in there for good hour, the pit lane autogragh session, people looked at us with faces like "how? who? you lucky ********" And they fired up the #51 and #71 cars, sad but that bought tears to my eyes, was inches away from the exhaust as she was revved.

sent this pic of me and Gimmi to my father inlaw, he text back, twins?

Rob, thanks for the photos, you are very lucky to be so close to the team and the cars

One question, what do you think, is our new 488 that good compared to the competition, or is it the nature of the circuit or something else? Maybe you have some inside info on that :D
During the race we lapped constantly +2 seconds faster than any other GT car.

i feel so lucky and priviledged. As we got to the pits later in the race, there were people at the doors looking in. We stood there 5 or so minutes, then saw refueller for #51 car, Luca who we spoke to earlier in the morning. We went had word with him about how racr was going and how car holding up. After good 10 minute chat, he said you 2 going back in? and he waved us in.

488 GTE, is super qiuck. IMSA hurt us with BoP, so there we not that quick as w should be, but in WEC, its alot more fair. We also go alot better on fuel, i think we were 1-2 pitstops less the rest aswell.

Do have few more pictures, but will hope get around to put them up later.

Winning #7 Audi Excluded After Post Race Scrutineering, Decision Appealed

The winning car from this afternoon’s opening round of the 2016 FIA WEC at Silverstone, the Audi Sport R18 of Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler has been excluded from the results after its front skid plank was found to be worn outside the permitted tolerances in post race scrutineering.

Audi have until 23:55 tonight to appeal the decision but if it stands then the #2 Porsche 919 of Marc Lieb, Romain Dunas and Neel Jani will be elevated to the race win, with the #6 Toyota in second place and the #13 Rebellion Racing R-One making the final step on the podium.

(News from the race organisers last night was that no appeal was received from Audi and official results have been published. The Audi’s exclusion is confirmed)

However this morning this statement was received from Audi Sport:

“Audi Sport Team Joest has appealed against the exclusion of winners Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer. Hence the result of the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season opener remains provisional.

“The Stewards of the Meeting received a report from the Technical Delegate explaining that the thickness of the front skid block of car no. 7 doesn’t comply with article 3.5.6 a3 of the LMP1 Technical Regulations. Audi Sport Team Joest has appealed the decision to exclude the number 7 car from the results. Hence the race result will depend on the decision of a sport tribunal.”

TRIUMPH FOR THE 488 GTE ON ITS DEBUT AT SILVERSTONE

Silverstone, 17 April – Ferrari could not have started the 2016 season of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) any better. The new 488 GTE won its début race with Davie Rigon and Sam Bird, while Gianmaria “Gimmi” Bruni and James Calado finished in second place thanks to their skill, the performance of the new car, but also the bad luck and strategic mistakes of their competitors. Perfect start also for the 458 Italia which competed in the GTE-Am class with François Perrodo, Emmanuel Collard, and Rui Aguas, getting their second win in the WEC.

GTE-Pro. In GTE-Pro class, the race started with Rigon leaping out from the pole on car No. 71, and Bruni, on car 51, facing a comeback after a technical issue during qualifying relegated him to the back of the grid. Rigon started to increase his lead on the pack, while Bruni climbed to 4th place. At that point, the race director called him back to the pits to wait out the stop&go required to change the engine. The first two hours of the race went by without problems and, also thanks to an excellent stint by Sam Bird, car 71 gained precious seconds on the Porsche 77, which was a constant threat until a suspension failure put it out of contention. At the turn of the third hour, Rigon on car 71 was ahead to the Aston Martin 95, the two Ford, and Bruni’s 488 GTE. Shortly after, Nakajima’s Toyota spread much debris on the track, forcing the race director to call in the safety car. Bruni’s car No. 51 benefited largely from this and made up without difficulty the one minute gap that separated it from the Fords. After the pit stop, Calado came close to the American cars and overtook them, even too easily. On the final part, Bruni decided not to change tyres and was thus able to come out ahead of the Aston Martin 95 at the last pit stop. This is the first WEC win for Davide Rigon, while for Sam Bird it is the first with Ferrari.

GTE-Am. In class GTE-Am, the 458 Italia of AF Corse team driven by Emmanuel Collard, François Perrodo and Rui Aguas (the only Ferrari in the field) was the star of the race. Collard completed some excellent stints that took the car into the lead, immediately starting a struggle with the Porsche number 88 of Al Qubaisi-Heinemeier Hansson-Bachler. In the final part, the strategy chosen by the AF Corse team combined with the withdrawal of the Porsche resulted in the best possible start the season for the trio. The next race is scheduled at Spa-Francorchamps for 7 May, and will be the last one before the 24 Hours of Le Mans scheduled in June.

BTW I'll be going to the Blancpain Sprint race at Brands Hatch on Sunday 8th May. There will be some private hypercars on show, I think they will get to drive their cars on the track, the La Ferrari is supposed to be there, dying to see that.
