BREAKING NEWS: World champion Nico Rosberg retires from Formula One

VIENNA, Austria -- Nico Rosberg has announced his retirement from Formula One less than a week after being crowned world champion in Abu Dhabi.

Rosberg made the announcement at a press conference ahead of the FIA prize giving in Vienna where he is due to be presented with the championship trophy. He made clear that after achieving his childhood dream of being crowned champion, he wanted to spend more time with his family away from the pressures of Formula One, saying he "could not go through that again".

Mercedes has not yet announced who will replace him

I know it's not Ferrari related, but news nevertheless. Que Alonso's move to Merc, the team he dreamed about while he was a child in Spain lol

My thoughts exactly. Where is the passion? The hunger for more? He has golden seat that the whole grid would kill for and he's leaving?

Best time to leave. Took a leaf out of Eric Cantona's book. Squeaky bum time for team bosses elsewhere on the grid however.

Did not see that coming but there are more important things in life than F1.

Will be interesting to see how long the line of drivers will be knocking on Mercedes door.

My guess is Alonso, he is foaming at the mouth with the thought of seat open. He deserves a third title and Hamilton deserves a real challenge in that Merc.

I actually had the feeling he would quit after becoming the WDC. It's easy to say that now after his announcement but I really did have that feeling. Good luck to Nico in the future. The only likeable character at Mercedes nowdays.

Alonso has a contract with McLaren and that seat suits him fine.

    Alonso in merc next year.
He and Lewis team mates again.
Team Mercedes implodes like Mclaren in 2007, good for us.
    Or maybe just wishful thinking.

I don't think they will go for Alonso, Ham and him would be to much drama for Merc

Would be amazing if there was a clause on Alonso's contract so he can leave and join mercedes. Would love to see him trash Hamilton. Would be fireworks till the end of next season.

    Didn't see that coming!

HAM and VET? Not impossible. How much does Seb 'love' Ferrari. Could he be - in real terms - a number two?!

But then if Mercedes take on a 'young' driver, HAM won't have any competition..

    Mmm..
    Trying to be less angry..

Contracts mean nothing in F1. Raikkonen had 2010 Ferrari contract, got booted out in 2009. Alonso had 2015 Ferrari contract, decided to leave. Rosberg had 2017 Mercedes contract as well. Why not Felipe or Jenson to Mercedes?
