KARUN CHANDHOK: Been to see cars at Turn 3, 4 and 5 now. The Ferrari and Mercedes are in a class of their own. I find it really interesting that the Mercedes looks to have much less rake than the Red Bull or Force India who have traditionally had the higher rear ride height, but also less than the Ferrari. They're obviously still generating the front downforce somehow. At turn 5 it's clear that the driveability and traction from the Merc is still the gold standard though.

Vettel pits in the Ferrari and he has completed his race simulation (only interrupted by the red flag). Numbers to follow.

The car is so sexy! I hope we get a nose as Mercedes and it will perfect! Thanks for the photos, btw.

Chequered flag. Sebastian Vettel's time while sandbagging this morning remains good enough to top the penultimate day of testing at Barcelona.

Still too many variables to read anything into, but it looks like Ferrari has built a better car than last year and hopefully that means we wont be seeing them flounder around in 5th and 6th place in Oz qualifying.

I wonder if any aero changes have been made so far this week or if the team are saving that for Melbourne

Yes there are still to many variables, but this car went very fast and on target to meet the 5 second race improvement predicted, and we should not forget the token system that prevented Ferrari from improving their engine after the blunder Ferrari made at the start of the hybrid engine. `for me I expect Ferrari to be up there with Mercedes, lastly, if Adrian Newey was so good i wonder why they could not topple Mercedes over three season.

People say Ferrari was running with less fuel I doubt this very much because they can't make the same mistake this year. all the coming for pitstops was just to tease people into thinking he was running light.

They also didn't do a complete race sim, probably not to allow the competition to work out exactly how much fuel was in the tank. Also possibly to make them think there isn't enough fuel to complete a race sim - high fuel consumption?

I am certainly very pleased to see the methodology they have adopted this year in testing. Put your head down and get your test program finished, and don't give too much away to the competition. It's been a few years I have been this excited about the start of a season. The car looks amazing, not Merc level amazing, but pretty close, and I feel there is much more potential there. Here's to a cracking season, welcome back F1.

    Forza Ferrari Sempre

    Andrew Benson Chief F1 writer
Right, now the dust has settled after that little pre-lunch lap-time excitement, let’s have a little think about what it might all mean. Sebastian Vettel set a 1:19.0 on ultras and a 19.3 on super-softs in the Ferrari. But a) it seems he may have deliberately backed off on both those laps; and b) he did a 19.3 on the softs - which should theoretically be at least a second slower than the ultras and 0.6-0.7secs off the supers. So let’s take that 19.3 as his benchmark. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton did a 19.3 on the ultra-softs. But we already know he can do at least a 19.84 on the softs from Tuesday. In theory, that puts the Ferrari 0.5secs up on the Mercedes. However… Traditionally, Ferrari run less fuel in their cars in testing than Mercedes do. Of course it’s possible that they have changed that, but let’s assume for a moment that both teams are doing the same as normal.Mercedes are widely believed to run about 60kg of fuel in their car in testing - that’s two seconds’ worth; Ferrari about 30kg - that’s one second. So if that’s the case here, Vettel’s potential quickest lap on qualifying-level low fuel is an 18.3 on softs. Hamilton’s is a 17.8. A half-second advantage for the Mercedes. Which based on recent history, is probably about what would be expected. Perhaps that’s why Vettel said Ferrari have a lot of work to do...

The ferrari looks really good in those red supersofts

Besides the race sim, I wonder if Kimi will do some low fuel runs as well. Would be interesting to compare the two.

How much you want to bet if it were the Merc he was talking about he'd try and extrapolate out their fastest possible time instead of going with the "we'll go with the 19.3 as the benchmark?

Mercedes & Red Bull not worried by Ferrari pace shown by Vettel on Thursday AMuS

According to the calculations of Mercedes, Vettel would have come on a lap time of 1.18.6 minutes. ... Is there a wake-up call? Mercedes boss engineer Andrew Shovlin beckons: "We do not panic." ... From team circles, we hear that Mercedes has always driven with sufficient petrol in the tank and never with full engine power during the seven test days. The car is quite badly worn after seven days, which brings with it aerodynamic losses. ... The Mercedes engineers are therefore confident that one could crack the 1.18 brand, if only wanted. Pirelli technician Mario Isola is pleased: "Exactly what our simulations have prophesied." ... Also the Red Bull was sent with neat petrol in the tank on the line. And according to calculations of the competition cost the problems with the Renault engine still cost 7 tenths.Renault will only be able to turn on the power fully in Melbourne. ... Christian Horner concludes from the fact that Mercedes is three tenths ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari.

My bet is that Ferrari have the slight advantage taking into account that the team is most likely trying to simulate the same conditions Mercedes are using based off of previous years times and calculations. Both teams were probably running very similar fuel loads and engine mapping for both at conservative but still competetive levels. Ferrari has no advantage to try attempting to run the car in a true qualifying spec all out in every sector and showing their cards. You dont win championships by having pre season bragging rights. Ferrari learned the hard way last year and it was rather embarrasing.

I expect a lot of changes this year with where teams actually will run based off the drastic rule changes. Last year Ferrari struggled to find the balance and speed through turns. In fact, they never figured it out. Vettel has already said these new regulations are like asprin- it fixes everything. I think Vettel is extremely happy with the car and how far and hard he can push it. Testing has shown the Ferrari to be very fast and stable. The advantage Ferrari have gained over other teams I believe is that they will be able to maximize downforce into and out of turns and be able to apply more power to the pavement. Mercedes went with an aero approach to better refine what was working for them. I think they made a mistake by discounting Ferraris resolve to attack and maximize downforce and now they are scrambling a bit to match Ferraris innovation with the sidepods and downforce.
