No need to lose all hope. In fact, we should all just stay numb till tomorrow. Then, after qualy, we can rant all day long.

We're atleast half a second behind Mercedes.

In front of Merc on Sunday just check the on-board of Vettel run and you will see that Ferrari was not pushing at all. I still believe we will come good

After winter tests, Bottas said that they was not pushing for one great lap time, and that they can go faster...so I think we are in same order than last year, maybe RB is behind us, hopefully

Then if that's the case, RB will catch us very soon. But in my view, we are not far behind mercs not really .5ths behind.

In Barcelona testing 2017 the fastest lap was over 3 secs faster than last years pole time, Hamiltons fastest lap today was almost equal to last yeas pole time. There's still a maybe 3 seconds to gain tomorrow so the deficit is not really representative. I think we're still going to be strong come tomorrows qualifying

Given the new rules i.e. with only 4.....let me say that again 4 engines for the ENTIRE YEAR.....practices(if any indication of what we just saw in Melbourne) will be limited as far as engine modes; let alone running the car with limited laps for aero and suspension setups due to the track and/or possible weather inclements.

When the fastest time came in Barcelona the track was rubbered in good. Now this is just first day. Of course setup might bring some tenths here and there and like I said a rubbered track is always faster. The thing that I am interested about is the engine not being used to its maximum because of short supply over the year (4). Taking that into consideration, more teams might have not gone very strong in free practice. But by the smile on Wolf's face and general feeling, I will not bet against Mercedes tomorrow or on race day.

This is just insane, imagine 4 engines only for the whole season? is engine mapping still possible?

yeah and this is why (as speculation goes) ferrari didn't run much in FP1. The limits on engines per year will be a problem for F1 later on specially for attendances. One proposed solution is to provide free practice engines.

+1.....fans paid good money in the stands. Free practice engines OR make 6 or 8 engines per year.....maybe 10 from an ENTERTAIN perspective as FANS want the teams to go "exceedingly fast" on a couple of laps during practice and put in way more laps than what we just witnessed.

Paddy Lowe said in the press conference that engine mileage wasn't a factor for limited running on Fridays and Saturdays. It's tyre allocation that's the limiter. Obviously he's speaking for the Mercedes engine, but ours is a good engine too. We did the whole winter test on just 1 engine.

This track is a-typical and very different from Barcelona. I do not expect Ferrari to be competitive enough to grab First or second position. 600-800 gap still exists in my opinion. I hope not.

In 2015 Ferrari began the year 1.64% behind Mercedes on pure pace at this track yet went on to win three races. Based on today’s lap times the gap is 0.65%. We should at least wait to see what qualifying brings before passing judgement on their form.

So we are not running on full engine mode and yet we are closer.

We have some balance issues and yet we are within 0.5 sec.

Now this is only Melbourne so wait a few races please but I'm staying optimistic here.

even if the car is fast enough, I fear Ferrari will mess it up with a poor strategy as we have seen before.

i'm hoping Ferrari have been sandbagging a lot in these free practices, but something tells me that the Merc's have been sanbagging the most in winter testing and come quali they'll turn up the engine that extra bit and and pull HALF a second or more on our best time....i TRULY hope not, but those Germans look pretty sneaky to me and have looked all throughout winter testing....including TOTO wolf....

i really hope Ferrari will prove me wrong come Q3.....but....don't know, we'll see how happy both Ferrari and fans will be after QUALI

You can see Hamilton was pushing a lot harder than Vettel in practice. It looked like Ferrari were taking it pretty easy. Vettels best time was only about a half second faster than his pole time from last year and we already know these new era cars are way faster tgan what practice was showing. I expect Ferrari to start turning the power switch up in FP3 and in all three rounds of qualifying. Its clear from practice so far that the Ferrari is far more stable than the Mercedes. My prediction is that pole position will be in around 1:19.7

Worryingly it looks like we're about a second off the pace in race simulation
"Okay,...Jean is smarter than you....... can you confirm you understood that message" Bernie on the phone to Max circa 2009

Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines - Enzo Ferrari circa 1960

More worryingly, it looks like there is absolutely no tire deg this year. Going to be a lot of 1 stops this year with the race won on Saturdays I fear.

yup i'm afraid of that also....whomever qualifies on pole will win because of really low tire deg, one stopper as well as possibly really hard to pass....
but yeah, our long run sims seem to be about a second off the Mercs...........unless we've run with 105Kg of fuel in there....which i don't think so

so i know it's still early to take predictions, but from what i've seen in practice, hte Mercs is clearly hte bench mark and we're a SOLID second, so far....

i really want Ferrari to prove me wrong.....so we'll see
...the new SF70H looks amazing. Let's hope it's gonna be as FAST as it looks.

My Opinion is that Ham will be on pole but with a very lille margin. And we will see a great Race with fightings between Seb and Lewis.

Hopefully ross thinks in that way.
There's an agreement that the current engine formula will not change until 2020.

And if and when it does change, my guess is it will probably be geared towards better efficiency, such as 4-5 cylinder twin turbo, with larger emphasis on electrical power.
