An instruction to Verstappen: "Just work the front tyres a little bit, they are still in the window, but work them a little bit approaching Turn 18."

    That's the final chicane.

Felipe Massa meanwhile is to be investigated by the stewards after the session for failing to slow under double yellow flags while the marshals cleared Kvyat's car.

It's not proving to be the happiest of returns to action for the Brazilian.

Raikkonen didn't just beat the old lap record, set by Jarno Trulli in qualifying in 2009, he smashed it by nearly six tenths of a second.

It was a mega lap from the Finn who has looked in good form all weekend.

So Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull all look to have started their full-pace qualifying runs - with few other teams following them in doing so.

Raikkonen. Vettel and Hamilton are closely bunched at the top with Bottas failing to find that pace so far, while Red Bull are around a second down on their rivals.

Not ideal with qualifying a matter of hours away...

That's the point, new rules after Monza but Mercs already introduced 4th ICE which doesn't need be changed or doesn't get banned, so they can keep using what they use now. The rule change affect ICE's introduced after the rule change

I am all smiles looking at how far behind those RBRs are. Love it, 1.1 sec, thats not something they will recover until the end of the season, no matter how good their development is.
