    The countdown starts here.

Nine races to go to decide whether Lewis Hamilton becomes a four-time world champion or Sebastian Vettel a five.

The German Ferrari driver starts with a 14-point advantage, but Hamilton has a golden opportunity in the next two races to close that on tracks that on paper suit his Mercedes.

He admitted here on Thursday that he needs to find more consistency than in the first part of the season.

Lewis Hamilton, Stoffel Vandoorne and Marcus Ericsson will all be running the Halo cockpit safety device in FP1 for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel was the last driver to trial it during his installation lap ahead of the British Grand Prix, but now the FIA are ramping up the implementation process with three drivers testing the controversial device on Friday morning.

The Halo has been heavily criticised for its appearance, while many believed the announcement to introduce it for the 2018 season is a rushed decision.

Work has been done to make the central column of the Halo thinner to help make it more streamlined and not to impair the driver's vision.

    Mark Hughes' Practice Pointers

    - Greater downforce and drag of 2017 cars means they are going to be more trimmed out than ever around this track.

    - The long straights of sectors 1 and 3 should pay to the greater aero efficiency of the Mercedes over the Ferrari

    - The ultrasoft tyre looks set to be a very challenging tyre for the particular demands of this circuit through the weekend.

Lewis Hamilton has also had some extra work to do this morning:

The Mercedes has also been fitted with the Halo for Practice One and Hamilton has been timed for the 'extraction test' with FIA delegate Joe Bauer at the front of the Mercedes garage with a stopclock in hand...

"I just lost the car on the kerb," Massa tells his team.

A replay shows Massa got a wiggle on the inside kerb at the final part of Les Combes, oversteered and went straight into the opposite barrier.

Massa got straight out of the car unhurt and is heading to the medical centre for checks.

The Brazilian ran over the kerb at the final part of Les Combes, with his FW40 then continuing straight over the gravel and into the barrier.

Massa, remember, has only just been cleared by the FIA to race this weekend after suffering with vertigo and missing the race in Hungary.

He will surely go through several more tests after that off - but he seems to be OK as he walks away from his stricken car.

Scary problem for Kevin Magnussen - the headrest is loose on his Haas and rising up behind his head.

"OK, box now, the headrest is coming off," Magnussen tells his Haas team.

"Fernando, suggest switching DRS off early into Turns 1 and 5, it's a bit sluggish."

More problems for Alonso after his early engine trouble.

“The tyres overheat quite quick,” Hamilton informs Mercedes.

Mercedes then tells Bottas: “Lewis reporting overheating quite quickly with this tyre.”

    Swift communication.
