Italian GP 2017 build up news

Tradition and legends on one track that’s not as “simple” as it seems

The story of the Italian Grand Prix is also the story of Monza, even if statistics show that the first race was held at Montichiari, with the Brianza track ready a year later in 1922 and that the 1980 race was run at Imola. The history of Scuderia Ferrari is inextricably intertwined with that of the “Autodromo.” It’s impossible to tell the tale in just a few lines: the triumphs and the tragedy of Ascari, the world championships with Hill, Lauda, Scheckter, the epic achievements of Schumacher… Then there’s the 5.8 kilometres of track within the Park, the amphitheatre grandstand at the Parabolica, they have all witnessed and created the legend.

There was a time when there were ten kilometres of track, when the layout included the high speed banked oval, which was a spectacle all to itself. The current track has few corners but a fair few hidden dangers. On paper it looks easy, but as it is the track where cars run with the least aerodynamic downforce of the entire season, it requires a particular set-up and a sensitivity from the driver, especially under braking when he has no drag to rely on. Monza is often compared to Spa in terms of the effort it puts on the engines, but compared to the Belgian circuit, much more braking effort is required and the lateral loads, especially on the tyres, are far less. The long straights and little drag lead to high speeds, even if the 2017 cars will be hampered in this regard by the wide front tyres, when it comes to beating lap records from the past. The rest is all down to the spectators who, year after year build on the tradition of a compulsive race.

Quali and race should be a mix up of weather.....rain then dry or vice versa.....should be an interesting race.

Many of Monza’s safety barriers have been reinforced ahead of this weekend’s Italian GP, the first time that the circuit will experience the new 2017 cars.

New TecPro wall blocks have been installed at Turns 4,8 and 11 while additional tyres, conveyor belts and tube inserts have been fitted to the existing barriers at Turns 6, 7, 9 and 10.

Added to that TecPro barriers have been added to the tyre barriers at Turns 9 and 10.

There has also been some resurfacing ahead of the grand prix along the main pit straight.

This season there will once again be two DRS zones in Italy with the first detection point 95m before Turn Seven with the activation point 210m after Turn Seven.

The second is 20m before Turn 11 with the activation point 115s after the finish line.

I have a sinking feeling that Hamilton will walk away with the championship lead post Monza.

If Seb comes in Second they will be tied on points but Lewis will have more wins.

well it;s no surprise that this type of track where speed is KING will play into Mercedes's hands, but so far quali seems to be WET as per weather network so who knows, maybe Seb will pull a rabbit outta the hat and put in on POLE.....

then sunday seems to be DRY, at least for now, so not all is lost yet and anything can happen, even a FERRARI win.....
Soooooooo glad 2022 is over, a season that started so well but massive decline after TD39....Hopefully 2023 will bring us tifosi something to smile about.

That would be really a shame after lead in CWC since the very first race

Vettel definitely needs to win either Monza or Singapore, both if possible.

I would not worry about conceding lead after Monza. Ferrari will be much stronger than Mercedes in tracks after Italy, we just have to hit gold with reliability.

I think Merc can use rotate any of their 4 engines for the next 8 races, they might want to use a higher mileage engine on a circuit with less engine strain. The engine they used last week they will most likely use in Monza due to less mileage and most power.

Does anyone know how many races their previous 3 engines have done? I know Bottas is 1 engine down due to the Spain failure so think he might take a penalty in the coming races which will cause Hamilton to lose his wingman.

We just need to ensure we are rotating our turbo chargers accordingly so we don't take any penalties if we have to use a fifth element

Fantastic Monza poster and we'll celebrate the 70 years of Ferrari whatever the outcome of the race, but to what degree is in the lap of the Gods!

If Merc look out of reach this weekend then we should consider taking a engine penalty to increase our engine allocation and help us strategically with the remaining races.

I think both RedBulls will take a engine penalty so in the race we will possibly have a few force indias, renault and William to overtake to get back to 3rd where we would have possibly finished anyways if the Mercs are out of reach this weekend and we are in damage limitation so might aswell gain an additional engine from it or Turbo charger

The above is a big IF, however i'm hoping the Ferraris are competitive and can give the Mercs a good run for their money like we did in Spa.

The youngest driver Stroll, to be on the front line, the pole record broken by Lewis, also his 5th Monza pole, another record ! Now all we need is a Ferrari win for this Italian GP to be one to truly remember.
