    Unhappy RIP Sergio Marchionne

Sergio Marchionne has left his role as Fiat and Ferrari CEO with immediate effect, as unexpected complications from surgery have left him unable to return to work.

After a day of speculation that Marchionne's successors would be appointed, a statement from Fiat confirmed that the Italian's health had deteriorated enough for immediate action to be taken.

A statement said: "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. communicates with profound sorrow that during the course of this week unexpected complications arose while Mr. Marchionne was recovering from surgery and that these have worsened significantly in recent hours.

"As a consequence, Mr. Marchionne will be unable to return to work."

As a result of the unexpected developments, the Fiat board elected to fast-track a succession plan that was originally being put in place for the end of this year when Marchionne had been due to step down.

A proposal has been put forward for Mike Manley, head of the Jeep company, to be proposed as the new Fiat CEO at the next shareholder's meeting.

In the meantime, Manley has been given full authority to act with all the powers of the CEO in Marchionne's absence.

At Ferrari, Fiat heir John Elkann has been named as the new chairman and the Maranello company has it has said that he will propose to shareholders that former Philip Morris chairman Louis Carey Camilleri become the new CEO.

Camilleri has already been given the powers to ensure the company's operations continue until he has been formally appointed to the role.

As I wrote in some other threads. Very sad and bad news. I wonder what has happened because of the words Elkann used? It seems serious. As soon as something starts going right for Ferrari something else is going wrong for something or someone connected to the marque. It's typical. Get well Sergio. Hang in there.

Hope he gets well soon. Found some interesting interviews with him below.

Here's a 60 minutes interview with him from March 2012:

Sad to here but my guess is his shoulder operation turned into something new that the surgeons found whether by operation, MRI, biopsy, and the likes. It's serious to warrant a new CEO. Hope he pulls out of it given his age and history of smoking.

I was wondering why he's been so quiet throughout this whole year.....not one peep from the guy. Did'nt like the way he treated LdM though.

Marchionne has lung cancer. It looks like he must be put into a coma.

Very sad to hear to hear this. I believe Marchionne is one of the main reasons why Ferrari is doing so well right now.

Marchionne brought back Alfa Romeo and fiat from dead in car sales, he has the credit for the Chrysler/Jeep success and also he is responsible for the record sales Ferrari achieves year by year the last 6-8 years. Its not just Ferrari racing department. He one of the best guys in the industry in terms of finance.

This is very bad news. He was instrumental in Ferrari's resurgence.

Though I was kind of expecting this because complications from shoulder surgery did not make much sense for me.
