The factors that hurt Ferrari in Australia
    Aero concept

As we know, F1's aero regulations changed for 2019, simplifying the design of the front wing in order that it reduces the amount of 'outwash' that can be generated. This makes the cars less sensitive to the wake created by the car ahead.

The principle idea here is that the wing design should allow drivers to follow each other more closely without significant performance drop-off.

Two schools of thought arose to deal with these regulation changes. Ferrari took what is perceived to be the more aggressive approach in an effort to recover as much of the outwash effect as it could, enhancing flow down the rest of the car.

In Melbourne the team discovered that a bumpy, high-downforce street circuit was actually not ideal for its design, as it simply couldn't crank on enough load to balance the car front-to-rear.

The make-up of Ferrari's front wing means it has quite a narrow portion of the wing devoted to downforce creation (highlighted in yellow), whilst the outermost section correlates with the position of the wheel behind in order to drag flow across and around its surface. This creates the outwash that will improve the performance of the car downstream.

The inboard part of the uppermost two flaps can be adjusted to trim the amount of downforce that can be generated and balance the needs of the driver. As this can only be changed when the car is stationary it makes for a critical decision based on the tyre it is running at the time.

n fact, it's probably a good reason why Alfa Romeo's even more visually aggressive design has more wing apportioned to the adjustable flaps and a less elegant outwash section (arrowed).

It's highly probable that these problems encountered by Ferrari are connected to the complications with the performance of the tyres, not only over a single lap but also over the course of a race stint.

Unable to add any more front wing angle and obtain the optimum bite from the front axle, it left it with understeer, which, when it knew it was on its limit, it attempted to dial out by reducing rear-end downforce.

Given these challenges, the Scuderia may have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to its front wing design for future street races. Perhaps it will need a design that is more akin to the one used by Alfa Romeo, forsaking some of the outwash effect for more downforce generating real estate.

The Medium C3 compound has a similar working range to the softer C2 compound, 105-135ēC and 110-135ēC respectively. It means they need to be worked in pretty much the same way, even if one is supposed to give more life than the other.

Taking some load off the front wing may well have negatively affected the performance of the car, making it somewhat of a handful.

Ferrari learnt from this and reacted differently when dealing with Leclerc's strategy. He stretched the first stint all the way out to lap 28 before bolting on the hard which has an entirely different working range (90-120ēC).

Whilst Ferrari chose to run the harder tyre, Leclerc also decided to take out one turn of front wing, which seemed to bring his SF90 to life. Able to lean on the tyres and reel in his team mate, Leclerc was pretty pleased with the car in the last stint.

But, Vettel's race had already started to unravel before Leclerc's race took off, with him unable to get on the power early, likely due to the understeer caused by their front wing drama. This element could have have a knock-on effect on Ferrari's energy recovery system.

The onboard footage from Vettel's car shows how the German was struggling during the second stint, requiring a change in tact that saw him using a quite excessive lift and coast tactic into the corners. This may have been linked to energy recovery rather than a bid to save fuel.

As the race went on, it appears this became more and more difficult, with derates clearly audible as the system could not keep supplying the energy demanded by the MGU-H and MGU-K. This will have hurt top speed.

This exacerbated the problems at hand and allowed Vettel to slip back into the clutches of Leclerc, whose issues had subsided with the use of the harder tyre and allowed him to recover energy in a more conventional way, limiting his apex losses and generally being quicker on the straights.

our FW concept could be more of a detriment in the long run if they dont upgrade it soon

Another possibility would be "Avocado" comes back to RedBull if he's not happy with Renault-->already the 1st race and "Whatta-tool" has thrown him under the bus.

This also presents an open door given IF RedBull performs in 2019. Driver's jockeying for Gasly's seat. A third team fighting and in contention for points.

Next race with the cars in top form, the hopefully correct tires at the ready, Ferrari should be the winner and a podium. Charles needs to fight to win, not worry about scratching his car and going on the grass. I hope he winds up feared by the other "Merc" drivers. Let them move over for a Ferrari!!

Briatore demolishes Ferrari: "Mercedes will continue to dominate"

According to the former Renault team principal, the Red team must recover 8 or 9 tenths to hope to beat the Silver Arrows. Therefore, another very tough season is expected for the Cavallino's ambitions.
The 2019 Formula 1 World Championship has just started from one race, but Ferrari's bad performance in Melbourne has increased the party of pessimists on the possibilities of the Cavallino to bring back to Maranello a world title that has been missing since 2007.

The winter tests had made everyone think that the SF90 was the reference for the entire grid, instead the Australian GP completely overturned the values, with the Reds not only having to watch the Mercedes domination, but in the race they were found even behind Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

According to a Formula 1 veteran like Flavio Briatore, therefore, the music has not changed compared to the past, with the Ferrari having to act as a spectator at a duel inside the Frecce d'Argento box.

"The Ferrari World Championship will be very tough. The Mercedes is too strong. It will be a competition in their home, between Hamilton and Bottas," the 68-year-old told Radio Capital.

"Absolutely nothing has changed compared to last year. The Ferraris have lost nothing from the Mercedes, but they have not even gained anything. The apology book begins at the first race, so it will be very hard if you start that way. To beat the Mercedes must recover 8/9 tenths. I say that Mercedes will continue to dominate "he added.

Now all we have to do is wait for the Bahrain GP next week to see if the rescue that the Cavallino men have promised will come or if the Sakhir race will also agree with Briatore.

Tombazis: "We control the consumption of instant gasoline and reduce that of oil in 2020"

The FIA tightened controls on instant fuel consumption in 2019 and banned the use of an additional oil tank during qualifying. Tombazis told Motorsport.com that lubricant consumption will be further reduced next year.
The FIA intends to reduce oil consumption in 2020. The intention of the International Federation is to control the consumption of lubricant in 6-cylinder engines.

The measure was necessary since hybrid engines had a restricted consumption (100 kg could be used in 2014, which became 105 kg in 2017 and now they have reached the limit of 110 kg).

Some manufacturers have tried to increase the power of the thermal engines using the lubricating oil as a gasoline additive in order to add antiknock substances which would have been banned in the composition of the fuel.

The FIA then intervened by gradually reducing the consumption of lubricant granted up to the limit of 0.6 kg per 100 km ...

Nikolas Tombazis, the Federation's technical manager in the car business, told Motorsport.com:
"The issue of oil is simple. The regulation states that the only fuel that can be burned is petrol, so the oil must be just a lubricant. We know that there is an oil consumption and in some cases could contribute to the performance so that it was not correct ".

"We have intervened and reduced consumption to 0.6 kg per 100 km, but in anticipation of next year we want to drop further".

There is also a provision that was triggered by the Australian GP ...
"And when it comes down to such low consumption it becomes clear that there is no need to have an auxiliary tank in qualifying. This is the novelty that came into effect in 2019 ".

Also tightened the controls on petrol?
"We have developed a procedure by which we can verify the compliance of the cars. We will better control the instant fuel consumption with a new system and we will check the weight of the cars before the race and after the GP ".

Turrini reports on his blog that Ferrari understood what went wrong in Melbourne (he doesn't reveal what it was). Turrini says that there is no panic among Binotto's ream regarding what happened in Melbourne, which is a good sign and approach.

"Sebastian Vettel spent Friday afternoon hard at work for the fans after coming to Maranello for a series of meetings with the engineers. He got stuck in to autographing a whole host of items that various Scuderia Ferrari Clubs had sent in for this very purpose."
A little background story so people understand how AMAZING Sebastian is: The SFC meet and greet after the car launch didn't go as planned, about 95% of the people present couldn't get anything signed. So Seb - of his own accord - offered afterwards to sign items sent in. #Seb5

    Secret F1 data & dimensions

Red Bull has the shortest car

Wheelbases and angles of attack of the cars are among the most secret data of the cars. The teams spy on each other and use photos to calculate the most important dimensions. A team has provided auto motor und sport with the data.

It used to be normality. All Formula 1 teams announced the overall length, width, height, wheelbase, front and rear lane when introducing their new cars. In addition the weight. The angle of the car 30 years ago played no major role. So you did not care about it.

Today, the teams say only as much as they have to. The total width of two meters is the same for everyone, because everyone goes to the maximum of the regulations. The weight of 743 kilograms including driver is also identical, because all are at the weight limit. The rest of the dimensions remain secret.

Actually ridiculous, because the teams know each other at the latest after the first week of testing exactly. The data is determined by photos. And so it works: All cars are photographed at slow speed in the pit entrance from the side. If possible in exactly the same place to reduce the error rate. The same thing happens from above.

Since the diameter of the wheels is known, all other dimensions are determined from the scans and then compared with their own data. The comparison of the measurement with the real data results in accuracy of the measurement.

In our case, the team in question has determined an accuracy of 0.5 percent for the wheelbases. At the angle of attack, the calculation is naturally higher at just under 5 percent. But that does not change the relationship. The longest measured car is also real the longest car. And the one with the largest angle of attack actually drives at the rear with the greatest ground clearance. The trend is always the same.

79 millimeters between Mercedes and Red Bull

So where are the 2019 cars? One thing can be said. The wheelbases are all awfully long. Too long. No car measures under 3.60 meters between the wheels. 2021 should change that. Then the wheelbase should be at a maximum of 3.40 meters. At the moment, Mercedes still has the longest wheelbase with 3,698 millimeters, closely followed by Sauber with 3,697 and Toro Rosso with 3,693 millimeters. With a wheelbase of 3,619, the Red Bull RB15 is the most compact car in the field.

That Red Bull and Toro Rosso and Ferrari and Haas have different wheelbase surprised a bit. Do not these teams work hand in hand with the design of the cars? Haas, for example, takes over Ferrari's suspensions 1: 1. "Nevertheless, our car can be longer or shorter because we have to build our own chassis. The height of the drivers can also make a difference in the chassis length, "explains Haas Operations Manager Ayo Komatsu.

At Red Bull there is a second explanation for the differences in the cars of the A- and B-Team. "We did not make the decision to increase synergy until after the summer. Since parts of the Toro Rosso were already developed, "explains sporting director Helmut Marko. The chassis is one of those parts that engineers have to commit early because of the long lead time.

    Renault drives largest employment

While the wheelbases are all within a relatively narrow range of 79 millimeters, there are larger differences in the angle of attack in the field. The car with the lowest ground clearance in the rear is still the Mercedes W10 with measured 84 millimeters. The Renault RS19 is located at a height of 141.2 millimeters at the rear axle at the other end of the scale. This results in the case of Mercedes an angle of 1.16 degrees, at Renault 2.15 degrees.

However, our measurement comes from the first week of testing in Barcelona. In the second Mercedes has apparently increased the angle significantly. According to our information, by almost 20 millimeters. Prompt, the car was faster.

Allegedly, Mercedes wants to moderate this way moderately continue, with the engineers because of the length and the basic philosophy of the car certain limits are set. Ferrari lies with a ground clearance of 113.4 millimeters behind and a pitch of 1.64 degrees closer to Mercedes than to Renault.

Red Bull drives as the inventor of the salaried car behind with 131.1 millimeters of ground clearance. The subfloor is angled 1.93 degrees relative to the road. Renault, Racing Point and Toro Rosso have gone more extreme with their 2019 cars than the pioneer of this vehicle concept.

The strong angles of attack can often only be achieved with a trick that, according to experts, is on the verge of legality. Our team has also measured the so-called "Chin Height", ie the height of the skid of the subfloor above ground. From this it can be determined that certain floors at the front end must be bent slightly upwards. Otherwise, she would have permanent contact with the asphalt.

FIA didn't want to be "dictators" over wheel rim holes
lol so FIA allow merc rims to be legal despite knowing how much more spending it involves , but will cost cut anywhere else that keeps merc far and away at the top of the food chain. Its fine to find loopholes if you merc but dont other teams dare do that or else they will close that loophole asap

lol soon matte red paint might be too costly for fia's liking

He's "old school". Hopefully he turns things around....."desperate times calls for......" It's gonna take at least 2 years......if they last that long.

Same thing with Andreas Seidl (LMP1 Porsche engineer) at Mclaren. He starts in May 2019. Again, 2 year results.

hopefully rims become standard from a non f1 team produced, close up some of the big advantages RB & Merc have
hockenheim 2018 / China 2018 : Never forget how quick Ferrari can lose it all, be humble.

Seems like they're moving more in the direction of a spec series.

You can say RIP Scuderia Ferrari when Mercedes does under the table deals to supply Ferrari with second quality parts.

Exclusive: Plans for new Racing Point factory revealed

    https://cdn-1.motorsport.com/images/...-factory-2.jpg

Plans have been unveiled for the Racing Point Formula 1 team to build a brand-new Ŗ25 million factory at its Silverstone site.

Planning permission for the new facility will be sought this month and the team hopes to be able to start building later in the year.

The plan is to have construction complete in time for the 2021 Formula 1 season.

The images were exclusively revealed in this month's F1 Racing magazine, which goes on sale today, 4th April.

"This is a new chapter, the dawn of a new era and there is huge energy from the shareholders to invest and help the team become a regular podium contender in the future," said Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer.

"The team has never been more stable or in better hands and this project aims to attract and retain the best staff in Formula 1."

Racing Point's current factory is based opposite the gates to the Silverstone grand prix circuit, covering an area of three acres.

It was originally built for the Jordan squad's Formula 1debut in 1991 and has housed the various iterations of the team since then, including Midland, Spyker and Force India.
But the factory has long outgrown the staffing levels required for a modern F1 organisation and is in critical need of redevelopment.

Over the past decade, headcount at Force India has grown substantially. Last August, when Racing Point took over, staffing levels had increased to 405 from the 280 in 2009.

Since then the team has added another 20 employees and plans to expand by an additional 180 over the next two years as it seeks an ambitious push in performance.

When the consortium, headed up by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, took over Force India in the summer, one of the priorities was to look at developing the Dadford Road base.

Since then a deal has been struck to purchase the land around the site to increase the size of the Racing Point HQ ten-fold, to 30 acres.

There is a two-stage redevelopment of the site, with the first phase already underway.

At present an overspill of 125 employees are based at a second location in Brackley, but they are being moved into Dadford Road with rented Portakabins housing staff in the car parks around the factory.

Warehouse space is also being rented for the team's simulator and race operations room in the industrial units close to their current base.

The team's modus operandi has been to out-source much of the construction of its chassis, but the plan for the new facility is to create a manufacturing centre of excellence to bring car build in-house.

The ratio of personnel employed between the design office and manufacturing will be determined by the make-up of the 2021 regulations – which have yet to be finalised by the sport's governing body.

"Our new facility will be able to house the expansion we have planned of increasing staffing levels to around 600," Szafnauer told F1 Racing.

"We need everyone under one roof, we want to expand our manufacturing output, create a nice canteen, some office space, meeting rooms and a gym for our employees – everything we don't have at the moment.

"But we don't plan for it to be too opulent. We still need to retain our DNA and our racer's ethos, so it will be purpose-built for performance."

The plans to upgrade the factory to a new state-of-the-art, sustainable building is an indication of Stroll's long-term commitment to the sport and a boost to the Motorsport Valley economy around Silverstone and in the UK – particularly in the uncertain political landscape.

    Verstappen + Mercedes?

"It has been suggested that Verstappen's contract contains a performance clause that would allow him to leave Red Bull if it cannot fight for the world title with Honda."

Who at Merc would want to leave? Their both driving to win and are doing it so far. Ferrari needs new blood.

Can’t see Mercedes wanting to replace their drivers or their drivers wanting to leave them. Even if something funny happens at all, it will be Ocon replacing Bottas. But who knows 2-3 years down the line Max could replace Hamilton, if he gets his 8th title and leaves for good

Ham will not come to ferrari unless, team is in position to win titles & mercs performance drops drastically. I don’t see later to happen till 2021. Ham will reach 35 by that time, so ferrari will not fetch him.

Max to mercs, until ham is in mercs this will not happen. Seb will retire at ferrari 2020.

In 2021 it’s stable & new for every team. If there are only two star drivers in the field then it will be Max & Lec.

Kimi will retire at 2020 with Alfa.

Ocon will drive for Alfa/haas next year. He has a chance.
