About the new Ferrari power unit (PU2), AMuS informs that: it is has more horsepower, is more efficient (thanks to improvement in the hybrid part also because of the the new Shell fuel) and that the Maranello team has solved the teething issues of PU1 which slowed them a bit down in the first races of the 2019 Formula One season.

It was a joke dude. At this stage of the current rules it'd be a miracle if they can find 10 hp per engine version :)

I think that our Spec 1 engine was strong enough as we’ve seen it in quali, is just we could not run it as well during the race. So i personally think this spec 2 engine has addressed those issues so we have a stronger engine during the actual race also, and at the same time some more horses (I’ll take even 10 hp) to boot

Coupled that with some aero updates and we might have a good car for the win this weekend, we’ll see....of course Merc hasn’t been sleeping these past 2 weeks and I’m sure they’ll also bring updates and be strong again.

Only a few days left and we’ll know where we stalk up
So 2023 started off bad, but managed to claw back some lap time come end of the year. Lets hope SF24 will give us tifosi something to smile about.

Maybe they changed the scent from grapefruit to a mix of papaya/mango this time.....lol for the extra bonus Horsepower

Thought the same. That would have been an awful lot. It will probably be around 15 or so. And most likely a better performing engine with some crucial drivability fixes.

I personally don't think its a problem with the PU...it is the tyres and always has been. Our PU is strong yet we can never get our tyres in the right working window...whereas Merc always is spot on with tyre performance. This dates back to the secret tyre tests they performed years ago. Also, every pre-season testing they just spend days and days testing tyres, not going for lap times.

Whatever the case, I hope the gains are enough to propel Ferrari to a 1-2...if not, the season is definitely over.

Ferrari PU UPDATE (Spanish GP 2019)

Ferrari: two-metal alloy pistons make their debut in the two engine?

After two years of experimentation, Ferrari decided to bring the steel pistons to the track: thanks to the production in Addicting Manufacturing, weight would have been saved, reaching a stiffness and resistance to high temperatures higher than those of aluminum.

The question everyone asks is: why did Ferrari anticipate the debut of the second engine of the three cars awarded in the 2019 season at the Spanish GP? Mattia Binotto, Cavallino team principal, announced yesterday the decision that was made in the Racing Department ...

"In Spain there will be a new power unit anticipating the initial program that planned to introduce the second unit in Canada - explained Binotto - for this power unit Shell, in collaboration with the team, has developed a different oil that will guarantee better performance. We were able to bring these developments here only thanks to a great team effort that shows how much the whole team is pushing to catch up ”.

The goal is to close the gap that separates the SF90 from Mercedes, bringing a contribution to performance also from the mechanics and not only from the aerodynamic package that was approved for Montmelò with new, more loaded wings (front and rear), bearing in mind that Barcelona 10 more horses are worth a gain of 0 "13 on lap time, given that the Catalan track, despite what is being said, is quite sensitive to the power of the power units.

But what is the novelty that distinguishes this two motor of the Prancing Horse? The mouths in Maranello are sewn, but according to the few rumors that filter it would be time to debut the bi-metal alloy pistons able to withstand the greater stresses that there will be in the combustion chamber and thermal expansion without compromising the reliability .

So far the engineers driven by Corrado Iotti have exploited aluminum alloy pistons, while, after a couple of years of experimentation, the times for the use of those in steel alloy that had not been set aside, but have been developed on a parallel plane.

It is true that steel pistons have a higher specific weight than aluminum ones, but they also have a greater capacity to withstand deformations and temperatures.

Not only that, but thanks to the Addicting Manufacturing, that is the technology that allows to realize complex parts through special 3D metal-jet printers, it is now possible to create three-dimensional objects with a deposit of layers of dust composed of materials that would be complex to use in traditional fusion processes.

The steel alloy (the second element seems to be very innovative) would have allowed the resolution of a piston that has no solid surfaces, but a honeycomb, thanks to which it would have been possible to reach values of rigidity and resistance to high temperatures above to those of aluminum, also reducing the weight that was the serious starting handicap.

The Ferrari engine in the first races turned out to be quite thirsty in terms of consumption: even in Baku Vettel and Leclerc were forced to slow down to save fuel, while the W10 dominators would have completed the Azeri GP with over 7 kg of fuel in the tank.

With the new Shell oil in Maranello they are convinced to reduce the friction of moving parts, contributing to a slight increase in performance and a reduction in consumption. The word on the track ...

Imagine this would allow them to run the whole race with qualy power modes. This would be epic ;)

So Ferrari loses a bit because of their fuel consumption? If it is less thirsty, it can close the gap a little bit again. Ferrari were very much on MErcedes level last year, probably even better, so it would be weird if Ferrari have thrown away their advantage.

ONLY if it were the case of unlimited fuel usage....but since we're limited to 110kg of fuel, don't know about that, as the merc engine seems to be more fuel effiecient...

but who knows, maybe with this new steel alloy piston innovation along with better lubrication from Shell we'll be better at fuel consumption....we'll see

If this new engine is reliable and more efficient and we manage to get the tyres and aero to work properly, it's promising. BUT, we still don't have Merc's RWS-effect or a big lead in the championship, and if Merc win again, any chance of a WDC/WCC will be a pipe dream. At least the team are really pushing the boundaries so all credit for that, we have the right drivers if they have confidence in the car.

we've heard that rumor for almost 3 years now; it is still YET to be confirmed by Ferrari....up until then that's just what it is....a RUMOR

Ο remember that on pre season rumors motorsport.it had said the same thing, that 3d steel piston are on the 1st pu upgrade (because they wanted to bench test it a little more) ant not on the 1st pu. So it looks like there is a pattern and the rumors are coming true ( but still not 100 % confirmed)

Apparently, Alfa Romeo and HAAS will NOT run the new "Spec 2" upgrade for this weekends GP.

Midfield pack is tight. This Spec 2 upgrade is early so both HAAS & Alfa will wait till Canada for the upgrade IMO. This is mainly to battle the Mercs.

Maybe it's got something to do with the T-wing and/or rear wing configuration. Possible curved rear wing instead of a straight rear wing. Can't tell until the engine cover is on the car.

Ferrari will try a new front and rear wing here, if the rumors are true. And if there's a new RW, they need to find ways to clear up the air flowing over the roll bars and the RW, maybe that's why there is a new engine cover aswell.

McLaren also has a revised sharkfin.

Mercs have extended their sidepod deflectors massively. New mirrors too although hardly noticable.

Reliable sources have also indicated that Mercedes has been dealing with cooling issues since testing, and most of the squad at Brackley and Brixworth were expecting a very tough set of 4 races to begin the season because the cooling issues wouldn't be resolved until Barcelona.

so much for the so called "cooling issues" at Merc.....they ended up with FOUR 1-2 finishes.....NOT bad if you ask me.....and all that with "cooling issues"....

We have all established that Merc love playing the underdog card. They are always crying "wolff"...professional liars should be on their CV. I hope our updates prove to be efficient and we can secure our first of many 1-2 finishes for the season!
