these tyres are supposed to be better and temps are little warmer, but who knows, that could be our outright pace or holding back a little even, hopefully we made good steps with so much regulation change

Diff track temp, Pirelli changed its tyre construcion compounds, better PU these are the variables taken into account

[AMuS] The new Mercedes has two faces. Vettel hinted at that too: "Some runs look good, some not so much."

Mercedes engineers: "There are times when we are as fast as Red Bull and then we are slower again."

[AMuS] The biggest difference between Ferrari and Mercedes at the moment is that Mercedes don't understand their car yet.

The aero update was huge so they need time understanding it, they suffer of graining and they don't understand the new Pirelli tyres yet.

[AMuS] Projections of the other teams say that the Mercedes is 1s behind Ferrari in the worst case. However in the good stages the Mercedes is only 0.1/0.2s behind Ferrari.

[AMuS] Mercedes engineers: "It depends on the temperature, the tyres and the circumstances."

One thing is certain: the aero update was a significant step forward. The Mercedes (base model) seen in the first week of testing was really just a midfield car.

    Bottas: Ferrari still ahead
While this flurry of fast times took place on the track, Valtteri Bottas was conducting Mercedes' first media briefing of the week. Highlights from his chat:

    - He thinks Ferrari are still ahead, with Mercedes and Red Bull closely-matched

    - Mercedes still have underlying balance issues with new package

    - But Bottas says the car will be much-changed when it gets to Melbourne

    - Mercedes will start their "shorter runs", so more towards a qualifying sim, on the final day of testing tomorrow

word from one of mercedes Major rivals (red bull or Ferrari) they believe the cars these two weeks mercedes have brought are not upgrades but complete different configurations that are going to be used track dependent(this week is heavy DF, last week had very minimal DF)

so like with parts trickling into the configurations to get optimize performances depending on track layouts

everytime these guys say ferrari is ahead just makes me second guess it, with their track record, Bottas better be speaking that honest truth

. @Charles_Leclerc : "Difficult to say where Mercedes is. But we are happy with the work we are doing.

Should I bet my own money on Ferrari being the fastest car?

    *Charles thinks*

At the moment I'm happy, so yes."

The only concern/mystery for me after 6.5 days of testing is our race pace , still can't get a read on our deg .. On face value race pace seems hindered by severe deg , but as we all know there's nothing "face value" about testing..

As far as our single lap pace is concerned , I'm fairly confident we'll be locking out the front row come Melbourne.

We surely struggled a bit with tires. But whatever problems we had, they are nothing compared to Merc. They have very big problems to sort out with their tires...

Last year Lewis did 1:16.173 in Q3 to get the pole on the supersofts. Since there are no supersofts this season (there's a gap) it will be hard to say for sure. This year C3 are the softs and C4 the ultrasofts (or thereabout). So the supersofts from last year could be labled C3.5 or close. Pirelli hasn't announced the compounds for the spanish GP yet but they will bring the C2, C3 and C4 to Australia, China and Azerbaijan. They will bring the C1, C2 and C3 to Bahrain. So Spain will be similar and the C5 will not be used. If C3 will be the softest then pole will probably in the 1:17. If C4 will be the softest then a mid to high 1:16 will probably be enough. Obviously in dry conditions.

16:04 Mercedes and Ferrari are the easiest two to compare at the moment on these long runs as they're both on the C2s.

Leclerc seems to have found a pretty consistent level in the Ferrari, in the low-to-mid 1m23s, but Bottas has been supreme on his set. He's just completed his 17th lap on the compound and is yet to drop out of the 1m22s.

Lol Gasly is nowhere near Charle's long run pace. If both have similar fuel load... then boy o boy I have some bad news for you Mr. Horner

    Bottas and Gasly get fresh tires. First, the second stint of the Mercedes driver on the C2 tires: Outlap (2: 25.8) - 1: 22.7 - 1: 22.2 - 1: 22.3 - 1: 22.4 - 1: 22.6 - 1: 22.5 - 1: 22.5 - 1 : 22.3 - 1: 22.1 - 1: 22.1 - 1: 22.5 - 1: 22.5 - 1: 22.8 - 1: 22.9 - 1: 22.7 - 1: 22.9 - 1: 22.8 - 1: 22.8 - 1: 23.0 - 1: 23.1 - Inlap
    Gasly got back on track right behind Leclerc and grabbed the Ferrari immediately with new tires. Overview of Gasly's first part of the race simulation: Outlap - 1: 23.4 - 1: 23.7 - 1: 23.6 - 1: 24.0 - 1: 25.5 (traffic) - 1: 24.0 - 1: 23.8 - 1: 24.1 - 1: 24.4 - 1: 24.8 - 1: 25.0 - 1: 25.1 - 1: 25.4 - Inlap (tires: C3).

Apples and Oranges. Bottas was significantly lighter on fuel given he started his race sim an hour early and already did 48 laps. Geniuses @Autosport should compare Charle's time with Gasly, both started their race sim at same time and the "mighty" Red Bull is nowhere near Ferrari's pace.

God bless F1's current safety standards. If it was 20-25 years ago, Gasly would've been either seriously injured or dead.
