Ferrari Challenge Europe - Sakhir, a jewel in the dunes
Sakhir, 14 Feb 2019 - The Ferrari Challenge will be paying its first visit to the Bahrain International Circuit, which has also hosted a Formula 1 World Championship race since 2004. Designed by architect Hermann Tilke, the 5.412 km track is on the outskirts of the capital Manama. A special resin is periodically used to treat the areas around the circuit, built among the desert dunes, to prevent sand from blowing onto the asphalt surface and compromising its grip.

Abrasive asphalt. The track’s layout makes it interesting to drive, both due to the variety of turns and to the height differences that work the chassis and tyres. The latter are also put to the test by the somewhat abrasive asphalt that, combined with the ambient temperature, only partly mitigated by the evening start, makes tyre management challenging.

495 light poles. The first part of the track sees long straights and lots of overtaking points, which test the brakes. In the second part, the most challenging, a sequence of differently sized turns gives a chance for the most technically gifted drivers to make a difference. The third and final part, offers a mix of the previous ones, with straights and technical turns that can provide or create opportunities for overtaking. Since its inauguration, the Bahrain International Circuit has stood out for its high quality modern facilities. The lighting system, for example, uses 4500 lamps on 495 light poles connected to over 500 kilometres of wiring.

Anonymous turns. Unusually, this track’s curves don’t have official names, except for Turn 1, the hairpin at the end of the main straight, dedicated to Michael Schumacher since 2014.

    – SMEETH TAKES FIRST POLE OF 2019 IN TROFEO PIRELLI
    ferrari-media

Sakhir, 16 Feb 2019 – Sam Smeeth was the fastest of the Trofeo Pirelli drivers in the first qualifying session of the 2019 Ferrari Challenge. The Baron Motorsport driver received the Motegi Golden Wheel, traditionally awarded to polemen.

By a whisker. At the end of the thirty-minute session, the British driver stopped the clock at 2:02.893, just 53 thousandths of a second in front of rookie Thomas Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage) and 126 thousandths of a second ahead of Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa), also making his debut in the 488 Challenge.

Surprise in the Pirelli Am. The rookie Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (Rossocorsa) was fastest in the Pirelli Am category, finishing an excellent qualifying session in fourth place overall, just 386 thousandths of a second behind the poleman. The third row will see Louis Prette (Formula Racing) who finished four-tenths of a second behind Smeeth, and Alessandro Bonacini (Kessel Racing). Behind them were two Pirelli Am category drivers, Jack Brown (Graypaul Nottingham) with the seventh fastest time and Manuela Gostner (Ineco – MP Racing), the quickest of the Ladies. David Gostner (Ineco – MP Racing) and Kent Chen (Formula Racing) complete the top ten.

    WINNING DEBUT FOR SCHIRÒ
    ferrari-media

Sakhir, 16 Feb 2019 – Niccolò Schirò won the first race of the 2019 Ferrari Challenge Europe, which counts towards the Trofeo Pirelli. On his series debut, the Rossocorsa driver enjoyed a perfect race, handling each stage with skill.
The first start of the season went off without a hitch with Schirò immediately taking the lead ahead of Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage) and poleman Smeeth (Baron Motorsport). However, in the middle of the group, Manuela Gostner (Ineco – MP Racing) suffered a contact that broke the front left suspension, forcing her to retire. Behind Schirò, who pushed the pace of the race hard, Smeeth passed Neubauer and set off after the Italian. In his wake Bonacini (Kessel Racing) and Louis Prette (Formula Racing) fought for fourth position, followed at a short distance by Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (Rossocorsa) first in the Pirelli AM category.

Prette unstoppable. The duel between Prette and Bonacini was lively and exciting with continual passes and counter-passes. The former eventually prevailed when the Kessel Racing driver went slightly long at the last corner on Lap 6. However, not content with fourth place, Prette set off on the heels of Neubauer. In the Pirelli AM category, Tabacchi held a comfortable lead over his nearest pursuers, Christian Overgaard (Forza Racing) and Jack Brown (Graypaul Nottingham) who enjoyed a private battle. An exciting duel also took place behind them, with Kent Chen (Formula Racing), Ali Kamyab (HR Owen), Martin Nelson (Scuderia Autoropa) and the 17-year-old Frederik Espersen (Forza Racing), bunched within a few tenths of a second of each other.
At the halfway point, Prette was in Neubauer’s wake and began to threaten, forcing the Frenchman into defensive trajectories that slowed down the pace of both drivers. This favoured Tabacchi who, in the meantime, had overtaken Bonacini. After 10 laps Schirò was in first, Smeeth 5 seconds behind him, Neubauer 11.7 seconds further back in third, Prette fourth, 12.3 seconds off first place, and Tabacchi fifth overall, 15.6 seconds behind the leader and first among the Pirelli AM drivers.

Top ten fight. Prette successfully concluded his climb to third place a lap later when he overtook Neubauer after a spectacular duel. However, the French rookie wasn’t entirely out of the woods, as Tabacchi seemed intent on imitating the manoeuvre performed by the Italian of Formula Racing. The positions behind the leaders also saw plenty of tussling for position. Brown took second place in the Pirelli AM after overtaking Overgaard who enjoyed a reassuring advantage over Dhillon. The British driver, on the other hand, was exposed to the attacks of a large group of drivers behind him, with Chen and Kamyab the most aggressive.
The closing stages saw several interesting manoeuvres that didn’t yield any changes of position, so Niccolò Schirò crossed the chequered flag to celebrate his first win in the series ahead of Sam Smeeth and Louis Prette. Thomas Neubauer, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (first in the Pirelli AM category) and Alessandro Bonacini finished next after an exciting race. Then came Jack Brown and Christian Overgaard, respectively second and third in Pirelli AM, followed by Dhillon, Chen and Kamyab.

The second Trofeo Pirelli race starts on Sunday at 7 pm local time (5 pm CET).

WINS FOR PRETTE, TABACCHI, HANNA AND CHRISTENSEN
    ferrari-media

Sakhir, 17 Feb 2019 – Louis Prette, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi, Tani Hanna and Peter Christensen all won in the first round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe held at the Sakhir circuit.

Trofeo Pirelli. The race, held under artificial light, was very hard-fought with lots of overtaking, in part due to the grid handicaps based on the results of Race-1. Louis Prette (Formula Racing) won ahead of Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa) who passed Thomas Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage) in the final stages after completing a formidable comeback from fourteenth on the grid. The race was only decided at the last, when Prette performed a spectacular manoeuvre to pass Neubauer and when Alessandro Bonacini (Kessel Racing), in second position a few seconds before the chequered flag, lost his podium place after a heavy contact with a kerb that damaged a suspension arm. After crossing the line in fifth, the Italian driver ended up in fourth due to the five-second penalty levied on Sam Smeeth (Baron Motorsport) for a contact with Manuela Gostner.

Pirelli AM. Emanuele Maria Tabacchi pulled off an encore in the Pirelli AM category, having to recover from the back of the field due to the grid handicaps. The Rossocorsa driver moved into the lead halfway at the halfway point, also taking advantage of the many duels that kept the group bunched up. He then controlled the pace all the way to the chequered flag. Behind him came Jack Brown (Ferrari GB – Graypaul Nottingham), repeating his result in Race 1, and the Swede Martin Nelson (Scuderia Autoropa). Fourth position went to Manuela Gostner (Ineco – MP Racing) who played a leading role in the race. After finishing third in Race-1, Christian Overgaard (Forza Racing) was fifth under the flag, ahead of John Dhillon (Ferrari GB – Graypaul Nottingham).

Coppa Shell. In the race held at dusk, Lebanon’s Tani Hanna (Formula Racing) enjoyed an authoritative win ahead of Christian Kinch (Gohm Motorsport) and Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport). By lap 8, the runner-up in Race 1 had used his faster pace to complete a fightback from seventh place. The race saw the entry of the Safety Car due to some contacts in the middle of the group and offered a thrilling finale with five drivers battling for the podium. At the chequered flag, Kinch reaped the rewards for his steadiness and Kirchmayr for his tenacity, having beaten off the attacks of Ken Abe (Formula Racing) and Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing). After Saturday’s accident, the Dutchman, rose from last position, thanks to a consistently face pace. US driver James Weiland (Rossocorsa), the winner of Race 1, retired.

Shell AM. Only two drivers made it to the line in the Shell AM category. In a real knockout race, Peter Christensen (Formula Racing) won ahead of Laurent De Meeus (Ferrari GB – HR Owen), who after an early collision only made it back on track and to the finish line thanks to his mechanics. Collisions knocked the other drivers out before the chequered flag.

Rankings and upcoming events. In the Trofeo Pirelli. Niccolò Schirò (37), Louis Prette (35), Sam Smeeth (27); in the : Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (44), Jack Brown (32), Christian Overgaard (21); in the Coppa Shell: Tani Hanna (38), Christian Kinch (28), James Weiland (23); Coppa Shell AM: Laurent De Meeus (32), Agata Smolka (23), Peter Christensen (21); Coppa Team: Rossocorsa (123), Formula Racing (110), Baron Motorsport (44).

The next round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe takes place on 29-31 March in Valencia, Spain.

Those 488GTEs look fantastic in their differing liveries, I like red ones best but these are at least different and very smart.

RETURN TO EUROPE FOR THE FERRARI CHALLENGE

Challenge Europe - Return to Europe for the Ferrari Challenge

Maranello, 27 Mar 2019 – After opening with the Bahrain night race in February, the second round of the 2019 Ferrari Challenge Europe season takes place this weekend at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit.

The championship thus returns to Europe after thrilling races in the dunes of the Sakhir desert that delivered the leadership of the various classes to Niccolò Schirò, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi, Tani Hanna and Laurent De Meeus.

Trofeo Pirelli. In this class, Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa) leads Louis Prette (Formula Racing) by just two points and Sam Smeeth (Baron Motorsport) by ten. The identity of the winner is now even less predictable due to the return of Bjorn Grossmann (Octane 126), fresh from second place in the opening round of the VLN and three times Trofeo Pirelli Europe champion, in 2006, 2015 and 2016. Maximilian Mayer (Gohm Motorsport) will make his debut alongside him. The German driver has experience in the ADAC Formel Masters and the ADAC GT Masters.

Trofeo Pirelli AM. After a perfect weekend, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (Rossocorsa) could also be the man to beat in Valencia. The most serious threat to him, along with the rivals already faced in Bahrain such as Jack Brown (Ferrari UK – Graypaul Nottingham), could come from an old acquaintance of the Challenge, Alessandro Vezzoni (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing) winner of the European title in the Trofeo Pirelli-AM, as well as the 2015 Finali Mondiali. Fabienne Wohlwend (Octane 126) also returns to the championship. In 2018 she finished second in this class and won the world title in the class at Monza, while German driver Oliver Plassmann (Autohaus Ulrich) and the Slovak Marian Sufliarsky (MERTEL Italo Cars Nürnberg) will make their debuts at the wheel of the 488 Challenge.

Coppa Shell. The class leader, the Lebanese Tani Hanna (Formula Racing), will try to consolidate his ten-point advantage over his nearest rival, the Swede Christian Kinch (Gohm Motorsport). After taking part in the opening round of the Challenge North America at COTA and the Challenge Asia Pacific in Melbourne, James Weiland (Rossocorsa) will not start in Valencia and could, as a result, lose his third position in the standings.

Coppa Shell AM. The great start by Laurent De Meeus (Ferrari UK – HR Owen), who made the most of two incredible races in Bahrain, is also looking to repeat the feat on the Spanish circuit. His most feared opponents are Agata Smolka (Rossocorsa), winner of Race 1 at Sakhir, the returning Dusan Palcr (Scuderia Praha), fifth in 2018, and Giuseppe Ramelli (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing), who also drove some excellent races last year.

Programme and TV. This track, always much appreciated by drivers and fans who can view the cars most of the way around due to its natural amphitheatre shape, will host an intense programme beginning on Thursday with the test sessions, ahead of the first time trials with the free practice on Friday. On both Saturday and Sunday, qualifying will be in the morning and the race in the early afternoon. The qualifying session and the races will be visible at https://races.ferrari.com/en/corse-clienti/live/.

GRIDS ARE SET FOR RACE 1 AT SEBRING
    ferrari-media

Sebring, 6 April 2019 - Ferrari Challenge has returned to the bumps and undulations at Sebring International Raceway after a 20 year absence, with the field setting qualifying times in the cooler morning hours before getting ready for races this afternoon.

Trofeo Pirelli. Benjamin Hites (The Collection) claimed pole position, pipping Cooper MacNeil (Scuderia Corsa Ferrari of Westlake) by just over one tenth of a second. It was an excellent result for the young Chilean driver having trailed Cooper by nearly half a second in yesterday’s practice sessions. New arrivals to the Trofeo Pirelli category, Thomas Tippl (Scuderia Corsa, Ferrari of Beverly Hills) and Martin Burrowes (Ferrari of Ft Lauderdale) put on a great performance to qualify so close to their more experienced competitors. Ultimately, Martin took the third position, 1.5 seconds off of Cooper, but less than a tenth of a second ahead of Thomas Tippl, who sits fourth.

Trofeo Pirelli AM. Neil Gehani (Continental AutoSports) claimed pole position ahead of Brent Holden (Scuderia CAVA Ferrari of Newport Beach) and Chris Carel (Scuderia Corsa Ferrari of Silicon Valley). The trio were able to put together similar times to some of the Trofeo Pirelli drivers and were all in a clump of eight drivers who were within a single second of each other.

Coppa Shell. Danny Baker (Ferrari of Palm Beach) was able to put it all together and claim pole position again in the Coppa Shell category with a 2:06.768. His lap left no question who was the fastest Coppa Shell driver of the day, as he was the only driver to crack the 2 minute, 7 second barrier. He qualified ahead of Mark Issa (Ferrari of Atlanta) and Claude Senhoreti (Ferrari of Ft Lauderdale).

Coppa Shell AM. Brian Davis (Ferrari of Palm Beach) took pole position in Coppa Shell AM over Jay Schreibman (Cauley Ferrari of Detroit) and Lisa Clark (Scuderia Corsa, Ferrari of Beverly Hills). It was a remarkable qualifying performance for Brian as he separated himself from the rest of the Coppa Shell AM field by over a second. Lisa Clark also put in a strong performance with her best qualifying performance in the series.

Snetterton, second round of Ferrari Challenge UK

Snetterton | 21 June 2019 - After its big debut at Brands Hatch, the Ferrari Challenge UK returns to the track at Snetterton, in its 300 configuration, which makes it the second longest circuit in the UK at 4779 metres. Initially used as a Royal Air Force base during the Second World War, the track has undergone many mutations down to the current design where technically demanding bends alternate with straights that offer excellent opportunities for passing.

Trofeo Pirelli. After dominating the opening round, Jason Baker (**** Lovett Swindon) starts as the favourite, although Jamie Clarke (Stratstone Manchester) plans on resuming the splendid battle they began at Brands Hatch. While Baker won and took pole in both races, Clarke responded with the two fastest laps and two second places that leave him just 10 points behind in the standings. The two are well ahead of their rivals, the closest of which is Jon Wood (Carrs Ferrari), 24 points behind the leader, who has benefitted from consistency while both Wayne Marrs (**** Lovett Swindon) and Paul Hogarth (Stratstone Manchester) failed to replicate the third places achieved respectively in Race-1 and Race-2.

Coppa Shell. In the gentleman drivers’ category, Toby Flannagan (Maranello Sales) leads a table in which the top three are all within seven points of each other. After two second places, one pole and one fastest lap, Flannagan is two points ahead of the winner of Race-2, Stuart Willson (Graypaul Nottingham), and seven in front of Mark MacAllister (Lancaster Ferrari Colchester), the star of Race-1 and author of pole and the fastest lap. Behind them come the other drivers seeking to join the fight for the title, such as Alex Moss, on the lowest step of the podium on the Saturday at Brands Hatch.

Programme. The Ferrari Challenge UK will concentrate all its activities into Saturday and Sunday. The free practice session kicks offat 9:50 am local time on Saturday, followed by qualifying at 12:30 pm. Race-1 is out of the blocks at 4:10 pm and lasts for 30 minutes. On Sunday, qualifying for Race-2 begins at 10:45 am, with the green light signalling the start of the race at 2:50 pm.

Challenge Europe - Carroll wins, while Prette extends lead in standings

Le Mans, 15 June 2019 – Adam Carroll won the fourth round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe held today at Le Mans, ahead of the 24 Hours. At the end of a race full of twists and turns, the British driver finished ahead of new standings leader Louis Prette, and Sam Smeeth. The Italian Emanuele Maria Tabacchi, the American James Weiland and the Belgian Laurent De Meeus all won in the other classes.

Trofeo Pirelli. After a pile-up on the first lap that knocked out some of the class favourites such as standings leader Niccolò Schirò (Rossocorsa), Bjorn Grossmann (Octane 126) and Thomas Neubauer (Charles Pozzi – Courage), the race became a duel between Louis Prette and Adam Carroll. The pair were locked in a battle for the entire 35 minutes of the race. In the final stages, the British driver got better of the new championship leader. Behind the two came Sam Smeeth (Baron Motorsport), who crossed the line ahead of John Wartique (Rossocorsa).

Trofeo Pirelli Am. At the end of a great comeback, Emanuele Maria Tabacchi (Rossocorsa) won the class, took fifth place overall and regain the championship leadership. He finished ahead of Jan Danis (Scuderia Praha) who held the class lead at times. Third place went to the Briton Jack Brown (Graypaul Nottingham) who failed to get into the fight for victory.

Coppa Shell. James Weiland took the top step of the podium in the second most important event of the season after the Finali Mondiali. The American of Rossocorsa finished ahead of a brilliant Fons Scheltema (Kessel Racing) and the Austrian Ernst Kirchmayr (Baron Motorsport), in a race where Tani Hanna (Formula Racing) and Thomas Tippl (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing) were both competitive. Tippl is one of the many drivers who usually compete in the Ferrari Challenge North America.

Coppa Shell Am. Laurent De Meeus (HR Owen) bolstered his leadership in the standings with a win after an exciting race. However, many drivers were in the spotlight, such as Mark Fuller (Rossocorsa – Pellin Racing), second over the line, and Alexander Nussbaumer (Scuderia Gohm). Agata Smolka and Henrik Jansen, De Meeus’s closest rivals in the standings, both had unlucky races.

Programme. The fifth round of the Ferrari Challenge Europe takes place on another legendary circuit, the Nürburgring, from 4 to 7 July, as part of the Ferrari Racing Days.

    Baker, three in a row

Snetterton, 22 June 2019 - Jason Baker proved to be the man to beat at the Ferrari Challenge UK, clinching the first of this weekend’s scheduled races at Snetterton. In the Coppa Shell, at the end of a bitterly-contested thirty minutes, Richard Guy climbed onto the top of the podium.

Trofeo Pirelli. Likewise on this occasion Baker was the man to catch. The driver from the **** Lovett Swindon team took command from the outset and handled the near two second-advantage gained during the opening laps to fend off Jamie Clarke, second across the finish line. The pair had, even on this track, managed to create an important margin over the pursuers who had, elsewhere, been involved in constant battles throughout the entire thirty-minute race. Among the most active drivers were Wayne Marrs, third past the chequered flag and Henry Simmons protagonist of some fine overtaking manoeuvres that took the driver into seventh final position. The struggle for the Trofeo Pirelli, which featured Jon Wood and Martin Smith, thrilled the spectators present at the track as the Carrs Ferrari driver took the honours.

Coppa Shell. An action-packed and enthralling scene played out in the Coppa Shell producing a third different winner in the three events disputed. This time round, it was Richard Guy who grabbed the glory ahead of Gary Redman and Toby Flannagan. The three, along with Mark McAllister, brought the leader board to life with continual changes in the rankings, with overtaking and counter-attacks, which, in the end, saw Charles Hurst take the prize. Also on this occasion, as had happened at Brands Hatch, the duels were both intense but sporting too, the entertainment turning out to be the true winner.

NÜRBURGRING RETURN FOR FERRARI CHALLENGE EUROPE
    ferrari--media

The Ferrari Challenge Europe is entering the second half of the season after the excitement of its 4th round at Le Mans. The battle resumes this week at the Nürburgring Circuit between the stars of the world’s most famous one-make championship. Although the Prancing Horse series has visited this circuit since its inception – when the Challenge Europe was still geographically divided into subgroups – Maranello’s cars haven’t been back to the 5,148-metre (3.198-mile) German track since 2008.

Trofeo Pirelli. After the Le Mans race, Louis Prette leads the class ranking on 92 points. The Italian driver is over 55 points ahead of Sam Smith, his closest rival in the fight for the title. The 2016 champion has been very competitive so far and in France won a podium place after some very unlucky outings.

One man who seems to be laboring under a curse is Niccolò Schirò. A real star at the start of the season, he was forced to retire at Le Mans and has a haul of just nine points from the last three races, putting him in third place in the standings, 18 points behind Prette. Finally, all eyes are on Adam Carroll who has won every race since his series debut. Although he is 39 points behind Prette, he still hopes to pull something off, at least as long as it is mathematically possible. We should also not underestimate Bjorn Grossmann, a true connoisseur of the Nürburgring, Thomas Neubauer, seeking compensation after an accident on the first lap at Le Mans that knocked him out of the running, and the rookie Lennart Marioneck.

Trofeo Pirelli Am. Nine drivers, including the rookie Walter Ben Doerenberg, will start in a class where just two points separate Emanuele Maria Tabacchi and Jack Brown. The pair are over 50 points in front of Jan Danis in third on 52. The absence of the Scuderia Praha driver and Fredrik Espersen gives Christian Overgaard the chance to make up significant ground in the standings.

Coppa Shell. Tani Hanna and Ernst Kirchmayr are set to continue the heated battle raging since the opening round in Bahrain. The two, separated by 11 points with the Lebanese driver in front, have a clear margin separating them from Eric Cheung and James Weiland in joint third. Fons Scheltema, Ken Abe and Christian Kinch are also still mathematically in with a chance, although Hanna has around 200 metres to make up. Holger Harmsen and Werner Genter are also aiming to create some space for themselves as competitors in their debut at the Nürburgring.

Coppa Shell Am. Eleven drivers are due to start in the class currently led by Laurent De Meeus. After his victory at Le Mans, the Belgian has a comfortable 32-point advantage over Henrik Jansen, the closest of his pursuers. After an unfortunate Le Mans, Agata Smolka will try to gain at least one position in the standings.

Ferrari Challenge UK To Race At Croft

Croft, 17 July 2019 – The Ferrari Challenge UK is visiting the Croft circuit for the third round of the series, which this year made its debut in the richly diverse British car scene. The stars of the championship take to the North Yorkshire track after battling at Brands Hatch and Snetterton, rewarding the fans with some exciting and hard-fought races. Everyone wants to see how the Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell drivers will navigate this testing but enjoyable track with its highly challenging and technical turns, alternating with fast stretches and the chance to overtake despite the road being quite narrow at times. Croft requires high concentration and a good setup to record a fast lap.

Trofeo Pirelli. Jason Baker has won the four Trofeo Pirelli races held so far although Jamie Clarke pushed him all the way, always finishing on his tail. Baker has 88 points, with Clarke on 64, still mathematically in with a chance of the title, a dream also kept alive by Jon Wood, third in the standings on 38 points.

Coppa Shell. In the Coppa Shell, on the other hand, everything is up for grabs, with four different winners in the four races run so far. Toby Flannagan on 61 points, the only perennial on the podium, leads a group of five drivers separated by just 19 points, with Gary Redman in second, followed by Mark McAllister, Richard Guy, and Alex Moss.

Excellent anecdotes, the truth is that I am a super fan of the Ferraris although I have not been able to drive one, I remember a movie that I saw an Enzo and I said this is the best car you can see and I still keep this idea!
