Mad Brazil’s president declares Grand Prix is moving to Rio in 2020

Yes i know there is a news/rumour thread. But this thought needed its own.

The Brazilian Grand Prix will move next year to a new purpose-built circuit in Rio de Janeiro that could be named after Ayrton Senna, the country’s president revealed on Wednesday.

Amid uncertainty over the long-term future of the current event at Interlagos in Sao Paulo, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro said that a switch of venues would happen in 2020 when the event moves to Rio. At a press conference, he announced that a deal had been signed with Rio’s governor Wilson Witzel and mayor Marcelo Crivella for the construction of a new track in the western Deodoro district.

The plan is for the circuit’s construction to be finished before the end of this year, and it will be financed entirely with private money.

Speaking to reporters, the president said: “The management of F1 has decided to maintain a grand prix in Brazil, but Sao Paulo has become impractical because of the event’s public financial support and the debt that exists over there.

“The new racetrack will be built in six or seven months. The hotel sector will be happy, the state economy as well since it will be six of seven thousands jobs generation. It is good for both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.”

In a tweet, the president stated: “After our victory in the elections, Formula 1, which would leave Brazil, decided not only to remain, but also to build a new race track in RJ [City of Rio de Janeiro], which will have the name of the idol Ayrton Senna. With this, thousands of jobs will be created, benefiting the economy and the population of the state.”

The former home of the Brazilian Grand Prix in Rio, the Jacarepagua circuit, was demolished as it gave way to the Olympic Park in 2016.

The new Deodoro circuit will be built on land that has been given up by the army and is set to be designed by Hermann Tilke. It is also targeting a MotoGP event as well.

Liberty has a strained relationship with the city of Sao Paulo and the race promoters. The event is the least lucrative flyaway race in terms of the fee paid to the F1 organisation, but Sao Paulo insists that it has a contract with F1 until 2020 to keep the race at Interlagos.

Hopefully the locals at Rio don't become like the locals at Interlagos. Teams having to hire their own security.

The Olympics were held at Rio in 2016 and tourists kept getting their cell phones stolen in broad daylight. Crime is rampant in Brazil.
It's not how start but how you finish.

Another Tilke-drome, great... So they are going to name a circuit in Rio de Janeiro after Ayrton Senna? He was born in Sao Paulo. These clowns are clueless. Funny.

He's Brazilian national hero, why can't they name circuits after him anywhere in Brazil?

Because it's not normal to name a circuit after someone not born in the city where it's located. In 1985 when they changed the official name from Interlagos to Autódromo José Carlos Pace it was because Pace was born in Sao Paulo. But since Senna was just starting out no one knew how good he would become. Since the only successful driver born in Rio de Janiero is Nelson Piquet, and the Jacarepaguá circuit was named after him in 1987 (Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet), the "new Jacarepaguá" should obviously still be named after him as he's just as successful as Senna was. Otherwise it will be shambolic.

They have named things after Schumacher that are not all in his birth place why is a circuit any different to recognise a national hero?

Is there a circuit named after Michael Schumacher, somewhere? I think not. Besides, are you aware of the rivalry, in all walks of life, between cariocas and paulistas?

Very well said ! Senna is a Brasilian and F-1 national hero . He lost his life driving F-1. Just think about the pole wins he had. No one ever did that many in the same time that he did them.

The proposed circuit in Rio is not going to be named after Ayrton Senna afterall. Good, they came to their senses.

New Rio track layout revealed but no F1 race to be held before 2021

It is not being named after Ayrton Senna as was indicated when Bolsonaro first announced the new venue's F1 aspirations earlier this month.

There has to be a few F-1 fans esp. in Brasil that recognize the name Senna, the GOAT F-1 driver. Rio is the heart of tourism in Brasil. Just the word "Rio" is enough to know where you are describing. Ayrton died racing F-1 ! Even the future GOAT Lewis recognizes the name and idolizes him. How many F-1 fans will reach that track and say, who's Ayrton Senna? O K , outside of Modena; most Italians will not recognize the name Ferrari. But that's not the same thing . Enzo who?

Having read some of the Brazilian president's opinions during his election campaign this is probably one of least offensive things he's said

Paris France is far more dangerous than Rio or even Sao Paulo. Forget team security , the military in force is needed at the GP. Worrying about a cell phone is the least of a fans worries.
