Testing Day 2: Speed and Sector Analysis

I was going to put this in the testing thread, but there are 12 different conversations going on at one time. This is to specifically talk about findings from data recorded (see below link)

    https://pastebin.com/tB3ZaueJ

I've been analyzing a few things and will continue to do so. Mostly speed trap data. For those that are unsure, there are 4 speed trap data points. The first is the speed trap (top speed), the second is speed at S1, third is speed at S2, and 4th is speed at start finish line. Speed trap is a DRS zone, and so is S2. Start/finish line does fall inside the DRS zone but is minimally affected as it is so early inside that zone. The speed differences are primarily from power, fuel loads, and the possibility of drivers lifting through the last corner.

    Albon, Red Bull Racing

    22.013 29.123 27.229 1:18.365 312 287 291 281 - 2nd lap of a 13 lap stint
    21.937 29.184 27.090 1:18.211 317 286 298 283 - 2nd lap of a 12 lap stint
    22.668 29.943 27.622 1:20.233 295 280 268 276 - 7th lap of a 17 lap stint

Notes: Fast times appear to be with DRS and relatively high engine modes. I can only assume heavy fuel loads. 20.2 time has engine turned down a lot.

    Bottas, Mercedes AMG

    22.710 30.440 28.096 1:21.246 312 276 285 277 - 5th lap of a 15 lap stint (last 7 laps crawling laps)
    22.107 29.835 27.365 1:19.307 311 265 275 272 - 4th lap of a 12 lap stint
    23.474 30.416 27.503 1:21.393 282 269 274 264 - 24th lap of a 50 lap stint

Notes: 21.2 appears to be with DRS and engine mode at highest during the day, but I assume a very heavy fuel load. 21.3 done mid way through a long stint, worn tires, and engine mode turned way down.

    Gasly, Alpha Tauri

    22.080 29.187 27.138 1:18.405 310 286 304 278 - 1st lap of a 5 lap stint
    23.393 30.823 28.115 1:22.331 288 269 271 270 - 4th lap of a 15 lap stint

Notes: fast time appears to be with DRS used in both zones. Engine mode turned up reflected by 286 and 278 sector speeds.

    Grosjean, HAAS

    22.401 29.215 27.564 1:19.180 305 277 288 276 - 1st lap of a 9 lap stint
    23.266 30.890 28.518 1:22.674 295 266 275 269 - 16th lap of 44 lap stint
    23.163 30.393 28.111 1:21.667 294 269 260 269 - 33rd lap of 44 lap stint (same stint)

Notes: Long run times don't appear to be with DRS, the 266 and 269 kph s1 speed suggest low engine mode, or the car has poor high speed corner grip

    Perez, Racing Point

    22.123 29.403 27.789 1:19.315 312 282 294 282 - 4th lap of 8 lap stint
    23.212 30.566 28.108 1:21.886 296 267 238 275 - 2nd lap of 8 lap stint
    23.197 30.685 28.400 1:22.282 296 273 251 271 - 13th lap of 22 lap stint

Notes: DRS used on fast lap. I suspect similar engine mode used to Kimi but much heavier fuel load. 238 and 251 kph s2 speed trap suggests major lift off throttle.

    Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo

    21.931 29.018 26.828 1:17.777 317 282 290 282 - 2nd lap of 6 lap stint
    22.355 30.318 27.990 1:20.663 317 280 283 280 - 6th lap of 12 lap stint

Notes: DRS used for both laps on main straight. Didn't do long runs. 12 lap stints were with heavy fuel loads but engine modes turned up much higher than competition.

    Vettel, Ferrari

    22.342 28.996 27.059 1:18.397 304 275 294 275 - 1st lap of 15 lap stint
    22.996 29.756 27.624 1:20.376 288 277 282 270 - 8th lap of 15 lap stint (same stint)
    22.463 29.708 27.328 1:19.499 309 273 288 276 - 2nd lap of 11 lap stint
    23.137 30.198 28.083 1:21.418 290 273 277 270 - 7th lap of 11 lap stint (same stint)

Notes: No long runs, no low fuel runs. 1:18 and 1:19 appear to be done with DRS and a slightly more powerful engine mode. Could also be reflective of new tire grip (unknown).

    COMPARATIVE NOTES:

HAAS and Racing point seem to be pretty close with fuel and power modes, but Racing Point was heavily sand bagging at the s2 point. To run a 30.566 with a 238 kph speed is dropping tenths. Compare that to the 30.393 sector at 260 kph for the HAAS.

Alfa Romeo may be running lighter than others, but they appear to be running much higher engine modes. They were running high speed traps all day compared to everyone else. With that in mind, their times don't seem to be very impressive.

Alpha Tauri I think were running quite heavy. Gasly posted the highest s2 speeds that I saw, which means they were hauling down the second straight with power and DRS open. If you compare similar speeds on longer runs (race pace), they seem to be about 2 seconds slower than Ferrari's race pace.

Red Bull is either running heavy fuel and higher engine modes, or they aren't very impressive.

Ferrari are clearly running low engine modes. 309 was as fast as Vettel got on a run with heavy fuel. I think most of that comes down to battery deployment at higher speeds. I think they are hiding their top speeds on purpose. Definitely nothing to worry about yet, Ferrari is keeping their straightline speed and lap times under wraps so far.

Mercedes are heavily sand bagging too. Which is scary. A 50 lap run gave them likely the best tire wear data over anyone. Being able to do low 1:21s with the engine turned WAY down on tires that had at least 24 laps on them, on a fuel load that I suspect started at pretty much a full tank.

Thanks! Let's hope that Mattia is trying to put sand in the eyes of our competition and the media. It would be a a master stroke!

Yeah, and it's Kubica. It's a nice gesture towards Kubica from the team to let him set a blistering time on a good set of tires. I bet he's still hoping to get some sponsors to drive as a racing driver again. I am afraid it won't happen. But I like the fact that Alfa Romeo gave him that opportunity to shine and get some headlines. I like Kubica. And it's terrible thing that happened to him. He had the talent to drive good races and perhaps become a WC. But his knowledge certainly will bring something to the team and hopefully Gio can profit from it as well. He has Kimi and Kubica to learn from. It's great to see there's a lot of love for Alfa Romeo on this forum. For me it brings an extra zing to Formula 1. Just another team to support alongside Ferrari! Okay, I am a bit biased, I drive an Alfa as a daily driver. Brilliant car though. Forza Alfa!

Interesting data, but it is very hard to read. Besides engine power used, teams have tires programme, where the single focus is tire degradation; fuel programme; battery programme; qualy; race; track limits; drs testing etc. We might compare the laps from different programmes and not know it. Teams might understand times better, because all of them have about the same agenda, on different points, but it is very tricky for them to understand too. For example Wolf said Ferrari are sandbagging because of same engine team(Alfa) getting better speed traps and faster times, but he doesnt know exactly by what extent. For me Mercedes look like monsters and Racing Point look ready to seriously challenge for 4th. Anyway thanks for the data and predictions!

Well said on all counts, having Alfa as a second team to support if and when Ferrari drop the ball is important to me too, I have a passion and respect for most things Italian and would love to see the country and its people return to the glory days of the past. I am not Italian but an attempt to dethrone the likes of Lewis and Merc would be most welcome!

Yeah, I always get a bit ****** off when some silly f1 says that Ferrari is too Italian to achieve anything. Always referring to the Brawn and Todt days. Italian car manufacturers have always been and continue to be innovative in the car industry. And let's not forget Passion!
