Russian certain Q2 elimination practice and qualifying thread

Should be a horror show around there. We'll even make overtaking happen at Sochi. Positive spirits and all that, but I genuinely believe this track will be as bad for us as Spa. Too high average speeds to even be remotely competitive. If someone (probably Charles) hits an inch-perfect S3 we might sneak into Q3 but will be a laughing stock on Sunday.

I hope the humiliation from this season just makes the men at Maranello work harder for 2022.

We have a shot at P4 in Germany and Portugal and we could in theory reach Q3 every race except the Bahrain sprint, but otherwise yeah this is just a dead end now. I give Charles a 35 % chance and Seb a 5 % chance this weekend of getting into Q3. Mugello was way too flat for us to handle, I had thought the cars would have to lift in the mid in race trim and when they didn't bye bye Ferrari.

Not the elevation, the throttle input

Since the mid was taken flat for the others all through the race, basically that added a second Spa-level straight unexpectedly. That also meant we had to run lower downforce than anticipated which made our tyres fall off.

Russian GP 2020: Practices and Qualifying

This one will be difficult for us since it is cold, high and tyre wear doesn't matter all that much here.

    Long run:

Mercedes as always on different planet, neck-neck between Ricciardo and Verstappen, Gasly looks faster than us (Charles). Ferrari, Mclaren, TP all are doing similar lap times.

Edit: Perez looks like has the pace to challenge Max and Ricciardo, but I'm sure TP will find a way to slow him down. Charles very consistent, similar pace with Stroll and Mclaren. Gasly is still looking faster.

As Seb is still a Ferrari driver, stefa, it's good to see him in a better position than of late in any session. OK it's only FP and we're likely to lose out in quali, I won't see it as I have a prior engagement, so that may be a good omen! To see the Mercs in their usual position is just depressing but only to be expected and isn't doing anything for the sport!

That's probably because Tifoso Svedese has already started a practice and quali thread under another title, unfortunately more akin to reality!

I believe Charles will have a little extra for qualifying over Seb than shown today but in theory in race pace the difference shouldn't be that great between them on this track.

ESPN here in the USA shows no time or channel for the Russian GP 3rd practice or quali to be shown on TV ? Finally ! They showed the times & channel.

Given how wet Sochi is as a humid subtropical climate in between a warm sea and moisture-trapping mountains, it's definitely quite weird that rain always seems to miss the Grand Prix weekends. That climate is essentially one of the rainiest in Europe. For reference, it has twice the precipitation in a year compared to Manchester in England's mud belt.
