They looked a lot more of a threat than the Mercs at that point. Unfortunately Charles was slow in his second stint on fresher tires plus he couldn't make them last. I don't think a 1 stop would have been an option for him.
Charles is not only slow in 2nd stint. He struggled in first stint to build a gap among top3.
Vettel was within 2sec range to him, Albon was within 1sec to vettel, Ham was 1-2sec range of Albon.
So Lec clearly struggled to put proper laps on those 1st & 2nd stint. Ferrari gave better race strategy for him looking at his race pace. Without that pit stop error he would have finished P3 at max.
Vettel in the meanwhile managed the race in 1st stint, but his 2nd stint in those hard tyres couldn’t last long for him.

Ferrari is making entering the weekend with a 1-2 advantage into a 2-whatever by the end of Sunday, a fashionable statement. Bunch of losers.

For our part, we tried both strategies; two stops for Charles and one for me and the final result proves that both of them were good.
Thought Seb left the stop for too long. This explains it.

Charles finished +6.3 to Hamilton. Works out to the botched pit stop, what he admits was a poor middle stint, and then that mistake during the final stint.

    Motor racing.

In hindsight Seb should have pitted on the same lap as Hamilton and come out in front of him, as they were before the pit. Charles should have been on the one stop also.

This....that’s why I was screaming at the TV....pit Seb now.....grgrgrggr I guess they did not hear me
That would have been the smart thing to do as we all know track position is always KING....

But Ferrari thought that by keeping Seb longer he would have fresher tires near the end to pass him....well we all seen what happened

I admire Merc, they know we have a strong engine and is hard for them to pass us, so they gambled by bringing Lewis in early and hoping that Ferrari would not cover him think that the tires would not last to the end...

I wish we had strategists as the Merc do.....taking some risks....especially now that the championships are spoken for
So 2023 started off bad, but managed to claw back some lap time come end of the year. Lets hope SF24 will give us tifosi something to smile about.

Nah, our strategy is world class! Doesn't matter if we go from P1-P2 to P2-P4, or have horrible pole-win conversion rate, or sacrifice valuable track-position for pre-determined plan A,B,C,D...etc etc...
Main problem is the random forum members here, some of us complaining about the brain-fade strategy is the main problem...not our world class strategy department and their obvious mistakes with the strategy!

And Binotto said some nice PR words after the race, so all is well!

We know mercs do fake stops.
When vettel comes in, ham stays out. Ham still had the pace in those medium tyres.
If vettel pitted next lap of Ham pit stop, by that time ham already had purple middle sector n was on course purple final sector too.
What Ham did is, he didn’t push enough on those Hard tyres at early stages. He just kept the pace on, in order to protect them in final laps.
As we know Mercs do like Hard tyres among all, they can do next race too with those tyres.

Charles was leading the race you never pit the race leader to put him on a 2 stop strategy .Albion did not need to be covered at all.Another bad strategy call this is how Ferrari handed mercedes victory again. How many races have Ferrari thrown away? far to many they can win every race with the right strategy this is the weakest part of Ferrari compared to mercedes and red bull.Scout the globe and start hiring for that gun.

Yes it seems Ferrari worry too much about covering other cars' pit stops.
Mercedes on the other hand are more confident in their own race strategy.
In Austin I think Max will be a threat, he was 2nd last year IIRC.

I think you guys are forgetting that we weren't the quickest car in the race and Charles couldn't make his tires last like the Mercs. If he tried a 1 stop I think he would have been a sitting duck at the end of the race. He lost the race when he couldn't make up time with his new mediums. Plus the bad pitstop didn't help.

    Albon - Verstappen 58-39

    And he is a rookie.

Born in London but racing under the flag of Thailand, Alexander Albon’s first word was in fact Italian – and that word was Ferrari.

Agreed re: Seb, on the fence about Charles. The keyword is hindsight.

RBR had the pace to win this race, Albon finished 5th. He is doing better than Gasly but still way off. That's why a guy like Daniel was so important to a team like RBR, when Max had a bad day or even when he didn't, Daniel was there to win if the car had the best pace.

Leclerc isn't a rookie. It's his 2nd year and is light years ahead of those two. Albon and Norris are average at best.

Norris is a top class driver, love his humility, humour and has that pace. He was very unlucky this year.

Sainz is beating him comfortably. Last year Hulk beat Sainz, and Hulk can't find a decent seat. Maybe Norris will grow, but at the moment that is what he is, average at best. Stop using top class randomly.

Well said! Lewis isn't recognized here as a top driver yet, it's all the car.

I think that most users rate him as a top driver. What some of them maybe disagree with, is the idea of some people that Lewis is in a class of his own. An idea with which I disagree as well. He is a top driver, who unlike the other top drivers, is lucky to be in the best car. Beating Bottas year after year with somewhat ease, is not an easy thing. Bottas is not such a bad driver himself.

Just the idea that Lewis has to race against his team mate every race does put him in a class of his own. That was and seems to be even now something Ferrari doesn't go along with. Just think about it, Max's crashing had him in a class of his own !! But all's well that ends well. 4 more points and Lewis will have his 6th. WDC.
