Formula 1 plans to overhaul grand prix weekend format for 2016

By Glenn Freeman Thursday, July 2nd 2015, 17:50 GMT

Formula 1's grand prix weekend format could be set for a 2016 overhaul, with changes described as "exciting and innovative" currently being reviewed by the FIA and Formula One Management.

Following this week's Strategy Group meeting at Biggin Hill, motorsport's governing body announced at Silverstone on Thursday that changes could be made to the race weekend format for next season.

In a statement, the FIA said: "Several exciting and innovative changes to the qualifying and race weekend formats have been discussed.

"[These] are being evaluated by FIA and FOM for a 2016 introduction."

FIA president Jean Todt recently told selected media he was interested in making changes to F1 weekends.

"The format of the race weekend could be improved," said Todt.

"Whether we should have the race 10 laps shorter or longer, it's something you can debate.

"Should we do a sprint race on Saturday? Why not?"

Although F1's qualifying format has undergone myriad revisions through the championship's 65-year history, any introduction of a second race per weekend would be breaking new ground.

So a sprint short race on Saturday as qualifications for the actual race?

It's good to see that the sport is finally doing something. I'm particularly interested to see what the new floor design can do, hopefully it will improve the car's ability to follow closely to another car, then maybe we can do away with DRS.

    from another forum:

    AMuS is reporting the following

    Plans for 2016

    - Only one clutch pedal is allowed. With this pedal the driver must control the start. With the 2nd pedal at the moment they are able to control.
    - Louder engines through some modifications on the exhaust pipe and another place for the wastegave valve (what's that?
    - Stil eight-gear transmission
    - More restriction with the radio communication. Driver should receive only safety instrcutions from the box like excessive brake wear or possible engine failer.
    - Tank size should be raised to 110 kg - not final decision yet
    - New teams should been allowed to use 5 engines in the first year. It should also applied for Honda - means the no penalty for engine number six. They received also penalties for the 5th engine.
    - If you use more than engines than allowed - you have to start from the back of the grid
    - The teams are allowed four times per year to change the defined tyres by Pirelli - they hope that each teams will use this joker at different grand prix and not all the same grand prix.
    - 2nd test day after the race in Abu Dabi - Pirelli should give them the opportunity to test the extra super soft tyres - all teams must agree on that
    - Sprint race for the reserve drivers - but they don't know which cars should be used. They need to clarify also how to handle the extra costs
    - FIA will revise about their token system in order to help Renault and Honda to close the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes.

    Plans for 2017

    - The car design should be adapted to the RB-survey, means two meter wide cars- wider rear tyres and side posts with the size of 1.8 m. The ingineers should submit some basic propoals by end of august based on those figures.
    - Costs for engine should be decreased to aroud 10 Mio.
    - New conditions for new teams
    - No refueling pit stops

Good to see cost control being suggested for engines. I would love to see a sprint race for the reserve drivers but the cars should be much less developed than the actual race cars. Sprint race for the actual drivers is a bad idea. It has been a long time since qualifying has changed (maybe that's because people like the new qualifying?)

These "could" be good, some of them...not sure about a sprint race unless they go back to the killer
    Q we used to have.

Agree, I feel the same too.

They just need to make the actual race more exciting. Fans are not asking for gimmicks like sprint race, that's not going to fix the actual race on Sunday.

Having one race on a Sunday has a real sense of occasion to it, and a Saturday race would negate that

Also, it will increase the costs. Imagine they have major crash on the Saturday. All new parts, maybe all new chassis. And if a team, have not got a spare chassis, and will not make it till Sunday, would that be enough time to have total rebuild? then the driver got to have the confidence that it is reliable and feels the same as he drove it on Friday?

In my eyes, it isnt broken, so no need to fix the weekend. Ok, maybe have couple more support races. They not seeing some of the bigger issues that is wrong with this once great sport.

Just bring back the one-hour qualifying format and qualifying tyres on top of that. Also let teams fit whatever compound they want on race day.

+1, and I feel that most fans just want the racing to be more exciting with closer competition, without all the aero/DRS interference, get back to the basics of motor racing and it will thrive again. That in turn would help reduce the costs.
