Ferrari will conduct a straight-line aerodynamic test at Vairano as they look to bounce back from their disappointing showing at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso's hopes of winning the World Championship during his debut season at Ferrari took a massive blow at Spa. He started a disappointing 10th on the grid and then failed to finish the race following a crash into the barriers late in the race.
The team are hoping to hit back at their home race at Monza in a fortnight and they will use one of their permitted straight-line aerodynamic tests to iron out some problems.
Although in-season testing is banned, teams are allowed to conduct six one-day straight-line aerodynamic tests.
A statement on the Ferrari website read: 'One can never count on new solutions that have never been track-tested before immediately delivering results: that has been the case several times this year for all the teams. On top of that, the changeable weather during Friday's free practice certainly did not make the job any easier for the engineers.
'With this in mind, as well as in order to test the aerodynamic configuration to be used in the Italian Grand Prix, there will an aero test at the Vairano straight over the next few days.'

Hope we've got special here. I'm sick of seeing RB and Mclaren in the podiums.

Ferrari hard at work in Maranello and Vairano
Work in preparation for the Italian Grand Prix is continuing unabated. Yesterday, Felipe Massa was in Maranello for a series of meetings with his engineers, as well as a session on the simulator. Meanwhile, today at Vairano, Giancarlo Fisichella got one of the rare opportunities this season to drive the F10, even if it was just down a straight.
It was probably not the most exciting day for the Roman driver, currently competing in the LMS with the AF Corse team, but it was very useful for the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro engineers, who collected a raft of data to go through with a fine tooth comb. Which is useful not only for the next Grand Prix, but also as a basis for analysing the reasons why things did not work 100% as they should have done last weekend in Belgium.

F1 car is so complex that even a slight change in aero can alter things very drastically down the car. We can see this almost every race with some teams. The only shame is that most of this data will be useless next year...
But Monza is Monza and Ferrari MUST PERFORM at the very top of the pack!
I hope that in 2013 ground effect will make a comeback and some of this diffuser data will be of some use...

the 2013 rule changes are significant and sidepods being moved forward for GE is interesting...but we go back to single diffusers again next year..plus we have KERS etc.the balance is going to be affected quite heavily. I'd doubt if the data from these tests would hardly be used after the Italian GP

Does it say so in the text or you're just assuming from the photo? Because I think it's not the photo from yesterday's testing, Fisichella was behind the wheel and not Massa.

Google said this:
Ferrari back on the straight of the circuit proved Vairano, in the province of Pavia, to make a series of aerodynamic tests in view of the Grand Prix of Italy, on the fast track of Monza. The tests will see the F10 straight working on 2 thousand meters, which is provided at the ends of two roundabouts details that allowed him to become straight with the car already launched.

That is what I mean. I see this kind of attitude from FIA as one of the biggest spend costs these last few years. We had KERS, spend a lot of money, didn't use it this year, have it back the next... The same thing with F-DUCKT, DDD, ground effect,... It seems we are going forward just to go back again... what a waste of time and money... :furious
And if you want to be competitive you have to spend huge $$$ just to be on par with the rest. And that is for one year only! There is no more evolution of the car (in space of few years), there is just one year / one make cars left... No wonder new (and some old) teams are having a hard time to be competitive. There was a time teams asked the FIA for stability of the rules... Guess the teams and the FIA don't see this as a problem in this financially hard times... :-??

Well FOTA agreed to ban KERS this year and they want it next year.Same with the Fduct..Next year they want to ban driver operated F duct...but trust me, Newey will come up with an automated version of it and all teams wil spend $$ to get it working
Luca di M wanted stable rules till 2012 with the new concorde..however innovations old and new being applied will increase costs for other teams..

Then it would probably be considered a moveable aero device if automated, and thus illegal
