I hope I'm wrong, but RBR looks quite unreachable to us (no big surprise tho!)... It looks like we'll have to fight with McLaren, but hopefully we're faster than them. I say Alonso getting the 3rd spot in quali would be a perfect result, then hopefully taking one of the RBR's at the start... and during the race, well, many things might happen to them... :-)

Something might have changed on Alonso's car since yesterday, I wonder if someone more technical than me might have an idea why? The car looks more unstable than it did yesterday.

Compared to yesterday's FP2, today the track looked pretty wet all around, so that might have something to do with it. Hopefully it is not going to rain anymore today and we'll have a much drier track for the quali. I doubt the car's apparent nervousness has something to do with the removed F-duct, if anything, the car should be more stable... you'd think!

Even if say we qualify 2nd or 3rd, I doubt the start finish straight is long enough to pull of an overtake, unless the guy in front has a really really bad start. Also wasn't Alonso saying yesterday that he'd most probably use the f-duct today?

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Singapore: "Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson is in Singapore for the Grand Prix and is hanging out at the far end of the paddock at the home of the team his company sponsors. Branson was cagey about just what level of sponsorship he would commit to in 2011 but he says he will continue to be involved with the fledging Virgin Racing team. He also revealed the team's technical chief Nick Wirth is staying at home to work on next season's car for the next five races, adding that he hasn't been disappointed by this season's performance, which in its infancy was blighted by reliability problems. Branson also had some ideas about the future of Formula 1. He wants to give the elbow to the blue flags, that are waved to encourage backmarkers to get out of the way, but he is keen on introducing trackside sprinklers to create artificial wet-running during the race."

It's a great circuit and that was a superb wrap from Brundle. Turn one is something of an accident hotspot but if the drivers get through the opening few opening few corners they can pick up speed from Turns four to seven. Turn seven is the best overtaking spot it's is particularly tricky due to the bumpy nature of the track. Turn eight is another potential overtaking spot but then comes the dreaded Turn ten chicane. Very tight with high and harsh kerbs, the 'Singapore Sling' will punish you if you don't treat it with care. Turns 11 and 12 are fairly fast but the drivers slow right down into Turn 13. There's a long straight down to Turn 14 and Turn 15 can be taken at around 140mph before you slow down for Turn 16. Turn 17 was where Nelson Piquet infamously crashed out of the 2008 and the corners that follow it under the grandstand are also low-to-mid speed. As the lap finishes, the drivers find their way through the long final corner, with its short apex that makes Turns 22 and 23, before hitting full throttle down the start/finish straight.
BBC F1 pundit David Coulthard: "It's a shame that they have not been able to come up with a better solution for Turn 10, because the rest of the track is brilliant. The problem with it is that you arrive there so fast and it's completely flat - you can't see it until you've started braking. That's why it's so difficult. Without doubt there will be an incident there this weekend."

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali: "With Felipe we had a problem with the gearbox. With Fernando in the (engine) programming we were not sure what we did. We pulled him in, fixed it first time. It is good to see the car going well, but it is a shame to have one car first when the other is last. The start is a crucial moment as we have seen - we need to concentrate on that at the moment."
BBC F1 analyst David Coulthard: "I think we've seen something very special today. The Red Bull had been fastest through all the practice sessions, Fernando has been keeping this up his sleeve. This was not an easy qualifying session but he has pulled it out when it matters."
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner: "It was as slightly frustrating Q3 for us. Unfortunately Sebastian got held up by Michael (Schumacher) who was just so slow on his first run. Then on his final lap he touched the barrier on the exit of Turn 12 and lost a couple of tenths and that was the difference today. And Mark just didn't get a good lap together. We underperformed - we should have two or three 10ths up the road. But we're on the front row and this is a long, hard race."

BBC Radio 5 Live sports extra commentator David Croft on Twitter: "Wow, brilliant qualy session. Set's things up beautifully for a cracking race tomorrow. I had a feeling that Alonso might surprise Red Bull."
Pole-sitter Fernando Alonso: "Obviously, as you saw, it was not an easy qualifying session. We had very little time to race in dry conditions, it seemed to remain damp here throughout. We were not 100% confident on some of the corners in practice, but by the time Q3 came about, I could push harder and both my tyres worked really well. I was quite happy with my lap, I didn't know if it was good enough for pole but we got 100% out of the car today. We had a problem in Q2 with the mapping in the car but we changed it, and by Q3 it was ok and I got the time."
Lewis Hamilton: "It was not such a bad qualifying session, I can't really complain. I am on the right side of the grid, the car is working well and hopefully that continues into tomorrow and puts us in a good position."
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel: "It was a pretty messy qualifying for us. I never really got into the rhythm. I got a little bit of traffic, just didn't get it into one lap as I did in qualifying. In the first run I misjudged the gap to the car ahead. After four or five corners I was already in the back of Michael. Second run, I had a good lap, in sector two turns 11, 12, 13 I slightly hit the wall in that section and lost some time. I could make it up in sector three, but not enough. I think we had the car to be on pole. But we are on the front row and have a quick car and we should have a strong race. Fernando got the maximum out and this is what we did not do, so we are second."
1629: Coming into this weekend a Red Bull had started on pole at 12 of the season's 14 grands prix. Hamilton denied them in Canada, Alonso in Italy and the Spaniard's done it again today. Are the FIA's new regulations on flexible bodywork starting to be felt?

Big difference at Monza was that Jenson had a high downforce car, Fernando didn't. I think the downforce bits start to kick in at about 60Klms (can anyone give an exact answer here?), that's why Jenson was able to get a bit of jump. That's not the case here in Singapore. Plus we are better under brakes, so I'd expect Fernando, with an average start will lead into turn 1. The Red Bulls are the cars under threat, they have been having serious start problems.

Nope, F-Duct works to take away downforce, by stalling the rear wing. At the start you want downforce for traction.

In the second session, Alonso radioed in that his engine didn’t feel right and asked the team to check the data being transmitted from his car. He was on a hot lap when they radioed him back to tell him to pit so they could reprogramme his car. He pointed out calmly that as he was nearly at the end of a good lap he should finish it first then pit. The team agreed with him.
This was an example of a driver leading a team, precisely the kind of thing Ferrari hired him for.

Indeed is better for the start without the F-duct, Alonso will have the downforce he lacked in Monza. Without the duct, the rear wing´s surfaces are all working whereas the f-duct removes some of the surface. At this track teams put high downforce wings and with no real long straights the f-duct gives no advantage in lap time, in Spa and Monza did. I think Red Bull and Mclaren have put the duct. Big question why. At Monaco no one put the duct, if im not wrong.

I'm a bit worried for the start, both Vettel and Hamilton wear the F-duct and Alonso could be at the mercy of them in the firs laps until he can open a gap. :-s
Alonso needs a clean start and a very strong pace at the start. :pray

I think the guys behind will be so preoccupied with each other and staying in the race that Fernando may just get lucky and fly off- hope so. Am just wondering what position Webbo will be in after lap 1.......he usually goes backwards at the start........
