Alonso favourite whatever the weather (Singapore Grand Prix pre-race analysis)

Can Fernando Alonso convert his second pole position in a row into his second win in a row?

Lewis Hamilton romped to victory from pole position last year and he could be the biggest threat to the Ferrari driver at the start – even though he lines up behind Sebastian Vettel.

The start

Alonso may have lost his last pole position to Jenson Button at the start of the race but don’t expect the same to happen in Singapore.

With the benefit of starting on the clean side of a dusty track and a short run to the first corner, Alonso would have a good chance of getting to the first corner first whoever was alongside him.

His chances are amplified because the car occupying the number two position is, for the second year in a row in Singapore, Sebastian Vettel. And the Red Bulls have been sluggish off the line in recent races:

Lap 1 position change Sebastian Vettel Mark Webber

Germany -2 -1
Hungary 0 -1
Belgium +1 -5
Italy -1 -5

Vettel lost second place to Nico Rosberg at the start last year and then had to fend off Alonso, who started fifth. But he thinks it could go differently this year:

It’s the bad side of the grid with probably less grip, we will find out tomorrow.

But I think judging around the track and also the pit exit, obviously they have a new cleaning machine here for the asphalt which helped a lot throughout the weekend. OK, the water doesn’t disappear, but in terms of dust, I think it’s much better than it used to be for the last two years, so it should be fine.

I think there’s a picture right outside here where you can’t even see the last five cars starting into the first corner because there was so much dust. It will be similar tomorrow but probably not as bad which should give us a good chance and we hope for a good start, see what we can do.

- Sebastian Vettel

Lewis Hamilton, third on the grid, fancies his chances of taking Vettel:

I am on the clean side of the grid and we have had the best starts for quite some time now, so fingers crossed that will continue tomorrow and it puts us in a good position.

- Lewis Hamilton

With overtaking so difficult on the tight street circuit we saw drivers fighting especially hard for position on the first lap here last year.

Mark Webber tried to pass Alonso around the outside of turn seven and succeeded, though Alonso ran wide forcing both off the track. Webber was later penalised after he was deemed to have taken the position illegally – useful knowledge for any driver who finds themselves defending into turn seven.

Alonso is clearly in a strong position ahead of the start of the race. He is running without an F-duct on his car, but don’t expect his lower straight-line speed be a significant vulnerability: he was only 2.6kph slower than Vettel and 3.2kph slower than Hamilton through the speed trap in qualifying.

Massa’s comeback drive

While Alonso has no cars in front of him on the grid, Felipe Massa will start the race with the rest of the 23-car field in front of him.

Expect him to start on the super-soft tyres in the hope of a first-lap safety car deployment allowing him to get his mandatory tyre change out of the way. These tactics worked like a dream for Alonso in Monaco, because once he’d worked his way past the new teams the leaders had to pit to cover him, allowing him to finish sixth.

Whatever happens, it’s likely that at some point Massa is going to have to fight his way through traffic. How quickly he can do that will determine whether he can salvage anything from this weekend.

As we also saw with Alonso at Monaco, much time could be lost fighting with the new teams’ cars should any of those drivers choose to put up a fight. Just three laps behind Lucas di Grassi at Monaco cost Alonso around ten seconds.

If Massa fancies a spot of record-breaking, the lowest position on the starting grid a race has ever been won from is 22nd. That happened on a street circuit, when John Watson won for McLaren at Long Beach in 1983.
Strategy and weather

Should the race start on a damp track – as the first F1 sessions on Friday and Saturday did – remember that any driver who chooses to start the race on intermediate tyres (or full wets) does not have to satisfy the requirement to use both types of dry weather tyre during the race.

The wet running this weekend has shown that the track takes a long time to dry out – contrary to expectations that the warm ambient temperatures would encourage rapid drying. The more sheltered parts of the track, such as turn five, take even longer than the rest.

Assuming the race starts on a sufficiently dry track all the drivers in the top ten will be starting on the super-soft tyres they qualified on.

Whatever the weather does it’s hard to make a convincing case for anyone other than Alonso winning this one. As the man himself somewhat acknowledged:

There are no big worries for tomorrow. The start is OK, the pace is OK, the car is OK and the weather is OK, both conditions.

- Fernando Alonso

The start may be complicated for Alonso. McLarens have been very good on this matter and Hamilton is very aggressive. Vettel seems less dangerous, he is on the dirty side and RBs have been a bit sluggish at starts.

A good start on his side, a non-suicidal one from Vettel and Hamilton, and good luck with the SCs before his pit-stop... It sounds too much for me, I don't think that my poor heart can take it, I doubt I will be able to watch this GP live until lap 60 (and that only if we are still in front).

hopefully Ramilton will be a bit more cautious after what happened in Monza.
I also hope Vettel won't hit Alonso, if the RB is quick enough he could attempt an overtake.

I know how you feel! I had to walk up and down outside for Q3 yesterday:-)

I think the team worked brillliantly as a whole yesterday, and not for the first time this year, not despite but almost because of Felipe's disaster. The calls on set up and actions passed between the pit bench, garage and driver seamlessly, without argument. It was calm, concentrated and respectful, even when there were problems. I believe we have one hell of a team evolving here - Forza Ferrari:ferrarifl

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Singapore: "Championship leader Mark Webber has gone backwards on the opening lap from his starting position in the last two races. The team have pinned the blame on the slower starts on clutch problems but because the Red Bull has quite a forward-biased weight distribution it also struggles for traction. Webber is protecting a slim five-point lead in the championship and does not want to lose ground from fifth on the grid. He says: '[The start] is something which there is a bit of focus on from the team at the moment. Our procedure plan is going to be pretty normal off the line but let's hope I can do a better job. I will do the start I can and then after that we need to get into the rhythm and see how it goes.'"

BBC F1 commentator Jonathan Legard on Twitter: "Just learnt that Webber has had new chassis this weekend. Still not happy with it. Might explain qualifying performance."

Renault on Twitter: "No rain overnight or this morning, beautiful sunshine, the track is dry."

Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoigne on Twitter: "Weather dry and skies look clear, should be a dry race."

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali: "Yesterday he (Fernando) performed very well considering. We had a little problem (with the engine) and he felt it straight away, we fixed it and then he did an incredible job yesterday. In the next two races we have a little bit to come in terms of updates and then in the last two I do not think we will have any major updates. I think now it is important to have a consistent car that is reliable and not to make mistakes."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Singapore: "McLaren's title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button line up together on the second row and the team say the successive world champions are free to race. Hamilton, who starts in third, is 22 points ahead of Button in the standings, but the team say there is no favouritism even at this critical stage in the season. 'I guarantee they will race each other,' said McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale. 'Jenson is no less hungry than Lewis is for this win. We do not have to win the race in the first lap. We need to keep the pressure on, try and keep Mark Webber behind us and [pole-sitter] Fernando Alonso has to worry about what's coming up behind him.' Neale also said the McLaren drivers are not on different strategies. 'There are no tactics,' he said. 'Jenson has been more aggressive here because it's a street circuit and Lewis has got the car well hooked-up underneath him. So we're looking forward to this one.'"

1228: Pole-sitter Fernando Alonso of Ferrari has been speaking with Lee McKenzie on BBC One. The Spaniard believes experience could be key to this title race and, as a two-time world champion, he has more experience than any of his rivals. Red Bull driver Webber has been in F1 for nine years but is yet to win a title, McLaren pair Lewis Hamilton and defending champion Jenson Button have one apiece and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull is another seeking his first.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Singapore: "Thoughts for the race? Well, in theory, the front pack of title contenders - Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Mark Webber - should pull clear of the chasing group led by Williams's Rubens Barrichello. Vettel's pace looks to be slightly faster than Alonso's so he will be pushing the Ferrari hard off the line and through the first lap. Alonso will want to stay out in front as long as possible to try to stop Vettel jumping him in the pits. Tyre degradation isn't expected to be a problem in Singapore but educated guesses have it that the teams will come in from lap 15 onwards. But the safety car often makes an appearance around the tight, wall-lined Singapore track, and with 61 laps for the drivers to negotiate in hot, humid conditions it could well appear to squeeze the pack back up and create some extra drama."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Singapore: "Darkness is descending in Singapore. The event's organisers say that there are a growing number of F1 fans in Singapore - and that this weekend is a sell-out with 244,000 tickets sold. For stats fans, I can also tell you that 50,000 sticks of satay were sold last year and there were 55 grid girls glamming it up. The event is set to stay on the calendar until 2012 with an option of extending that deal with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone for a further two years. The Marina Bay area of the city locks down for the event just four days before the cars take to the track for Friday practice but construction work actually begins in May. There are no plans to move the race away from its current location even though a track is being built on the eastern side of Singapore in Changi. The plan for the new purpose-built track, which aims to be ready by 2012, is for it to host FIA-sanctioned Grade 2 races."

1243: "Statistically, Ferrari have been better starters than us but we have done so homework and hopefully we'll get Fernando at the start," Vettel tells Brundle on BBC One. "It's a long race, very humid and quite hot, There is no room for mistakes, one of the most difficult races of the year. We are up there and that's what counts. We wanted pole but second is not a disaster - the points are awarded on Sunday, not Saturday."
