GV is my no.1 absolute hero in F1. There just aren't enough superlatives to describe him and his driving. I love Ferrari, but if my mind ever imagines a Ferrari F1 car with a driver in it, it will be Gilles that I will picture.

Ferrari had to force him out the car, he wanted a new wheel and to get going :-D

Whenever I watch a documentary or read a book about him I still get tears in my eyes. I have this short clip that I would like to share with you:

I like the comment. In today's F1 overtaking doesn't happen because the drivers are too rich and too worried about their hairstyles.

That was just awesome. :clap
Thank you for posting and reminding me what real wheel to wheel was all about! None of that DRS and KERS nonsence.
Great to hear a positive review about about Ferrari from Clarkson.:-)
The poster asked what was so special about Gilles passion, fire and commitment ---a man who just loved to be in a Ferrari! ;-)
So far removed from his son!

Couldn't they change front wings back then?

Couldn't they change front wings back then?

They were not so important, Gilles even started his last race without a front wing.

So far removed from his son!

Jacques seemed to blame Ferrari for the death of his father, which was sad, but nothing we could do about it. I remember reading how Luca Di tried to make him welcome in F1 and he shunned him, so I guess if he felt that sort of thing towards us then so be it, which was a shame in a way.

Try to get the hardcover (the black book), I'm not sure if the paperback version has those beautiful pictures in it.

Can anyone tell me which race it was Gilles was driving with a front broken nose? I'ld love to watch that race from the start. Thanks

I wasn't born when Gilles was around, but I've seen just about everything there is of him on the internet, and have read the books that my Dad has. Our house is named after him.

If I lived 40 years ago, I surely would have been at Zandvoort for that race. Thanks for the book recommendation. I recently read Jackie Stewart's biography, also very interesting. I've become more interested in the history of the sport.

I love this pic, every time I look at it, it reminds me what I thought of him when I watched him race - to me he was indestructible. I wish it had stayed true.

There is a memorial stone on the place where he landed. I cycle the track every week and often take a look at it. By the flowers I can tell you he isn't forgotten.

Also I don't know if it's coincidence but Circuit Zolder has highway exit number 27.

he was unbeleivable, even if you weren't a ferrari fan, the fact that gilles would be in the race would be enough reason for people to watch, because they knew he would do something amazing, he was never boring to watch.

I was lucky to seen Gilles race on my hometrack on Zandvoort in the Netherlands, and giving up was not an option in his eyes.
Never i have seen a driver taking a car to the limit and sometime's over it, and still get away with the whole thing.
Unfortunaly that also cost him his life.....like Senna, driving an F1 car was like being between earth & heaven for both of them.
To bad we lost both of them but at least they were doing what they loved the most "Driving an F1 car"
