Basically as the title reads, FIA is looking into placing roll bars in front of the driver to prevent accidents like the one that happened to Felipe. They wont look to pleasant, but at least they will increase safety for the drivers.

wow, uggggllyyy. If the FIA are determined to protect drivers in this way, they should think about fighter jet canopy style protection and not videos roll bars.

That is just ridiculous looking...

Isn't it kind of disturbing the driver's view?

That's what I assume as well. Aside from being ugly, the bars would obstruct the peripheral vision of the driver. I think the FIA has to post studies like this to show the world that they are being proactive with safety.

lol next stop robots for drivers because clearly vision isn't a priority to these engineers.

That'd work well, especially against something small like a spring :roll

Yes but even if the tire misses the driver's head it will still hit the top of the engine cover. So how is this thing gonna work?

100% agree. But with a transparent cover above the driver like in a jet fighter, wouldn't that dramatically increase the time of exiting the cockpit in a dangerous situation?
Safety has to be increased but this seems to have more drawbacks than pros. Couldn't a small component, in a tremendously unlucky sitation, pass through this device and hit the driver?

Same can be said for the HANS device, you have to detach the part that's connected to the cockpit before you can come out. But the reality is, in most accident situation, drivers are not required to rush out of a car. In fact, if your car is stranded on the circuit, you are to remain in your car until the race is brought to a halt by a safety car. But HANS benefits in ALL crashes, so the advantage is more important.

Cockpit canopy can be quickly ejected too, as in a fighter plane when the pilot ejects, the canopy is blasted off and the pilot clears the plane in less than a second. Of course we don't have to blast off the entire canopy of an F1 car into the air, but just enough to flip it open.

Canopy can certainly provide protection is more situation, compared to a fire situation which is very rare. Canopy protects driver from projectile of nearby accidents, protect driver from side impact that may launch the other car towards the driver's head, protects from flying wheel, and so on.

Why not windshields instead? Then they can have tear-offs for pit stops like they do on their helmet visors.

Yeah, like it would stop a small piece of metal debris getting through. They might as well put a windshield around it.
