Ferrari have declared their delight at Sergio Perez’s podium finish in Canada, after admitting they felt the Sauber driver - a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy - had been too aggressive behind the wheel at recent Grands Prix.
After securing an excellent second place at round two in Malaysia, where he came close to beating Ferrari’s own Fernando Alonso, Perez failed to score in the subsequent four races, prior to his resurgence at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
“After Monaco, we had a discussion with Sergio,” revealed Luca Baldisserri, head of the Ferrari Driver Academy. “We wanted to find out why recent results had not lived up to expectations after the Malaysian Grand Prix.
“Perez is undoubtedly talented, but he often lets himself down by being too aggressive which, especially in Formula One, does not deliver results. The Montreal race was a great response, a race in which Sergio not only ran at a great pace, but also managed his race very well, managing to stay on track for 50 laps on the same set of tyres.”
After his Malaysia showing, the media were tipping Perez as a potential mid-season replacement at Ferrari for the then-ailing Felipe Massa. However, such a possibility was quickly ruled out by both parties and Massa’s results have also improved significantly since then.
Perez now lies ninth in the 2012 drivers’ standings on 37 points, two places and 16 points clear of team mate Kamui Kobayashi. Massa is 14th with 11 points, nine of those 11 scored in the last two races.
