Fernando Alonso has described his second-place finish in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix as ‘a fantastic result’ for his Ferrari team, with the Maranello-based outfit enjoying a much stronger start to the Formula 1 season than 12 months ago.

The Spaniard, who leapfrogged team-mate Felipe Massa and Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel during a frantic second pit-stop phase, took the first chequered flag of the year just over 12 seconds behind race-winner Kimi Räikkönen.

"It was a fantastic race for us, fighting for the win," said Alonso. "I’m a little bit sad not to win the race but Kimi was fantastic today and the Lotus team as well. We need to congratulate them for a fantastic race.

"It was not easy and there was some tricky traffic with backmarkers, but we’re extremely happy after a very difficult start last year. Now the situation is very different; we’re optimistic, the car is handling well and we have an extremely interesting season ahead of us."

Alonso approaches next weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang with a seven-point deficit to Räikkönen in the early championship standings, while Red Bull rival and current title holder Sebastian Vettel sits three points further back.

That's what I like about Alonso, he gives credit where credit is due and he doesn't complain about things he can't change!
He states the facts in pretty clinical terms, which is what he needs to stay focussed on the prize: both titles for Ferrari!!!

it went much better than I expected. No tyre wear issues. Car is fast through the race. And Red Bull aint light years ahead, in fact it's slower than us. Now it's just a matter of keeping up with the development and away from Groesjan at the starts

Perhaps he should credit the team a bit more.
Massa had to fight all the way thanks to the team letting him hang out there for some extra laps and Alonso got it served.

As has been clarified, Alonso/Stella made a last minute decision to come in early.
Massa/Smedley chose to stay true to the original plan...

Knew I could Count on you Greg :rotfl
To correct you, I never said he took all the credit for him self. and it my opinion and that is not trolling. I guess your opinion is that I am, so I'll let you believe that :)

So why was the team not given enough credit for your liking?

We have started out better than even I expected. Who would trade this year for last year? Didn't think so. :-D

Forza Ferrari!
