...ummmm, hello. You hired him to drive for you at the highest levels of auto racing. Why would you need to protect him? Shouldn't he be ready for all this?

Quite a surprise for me when McLaren chose to bring in someone with absolutely no experience. Top team's investment in young talent usually involve drivers like Ric who at least have some experience in F1.

Apparently Magnussen is a talented driver and giving him a seat in F1 is not enough. The team needs to protect him and help him to progress more. IMO it is a good move to choose Magnussen. Especially when their 2014 season won't be their best as they are preparing for 2015 season. So Magnussen will gain one year experience to prepare for 2015.
