Maranello, 16 December –James Allison’s first term as technical director of Scuderia Ferrari is coming to a close. However, unlike school, there are no report cards to be awaited with trepidation, although it’s still a good opportunity to have a quick chat with James and get his first impressions at the start of what is his second stint at Ferrari, coming at a time that is particularly challenging for all Formula 1 engineers.

“I definitely haven’t spent time going into the details of the design of the new car, as it wouldn’t make any sense at this stage,” James told www.ferrari.com. “Rather, I concentrated on trying to direct adequate resources and on putting the best people in the right places to optimise attention to detail. Actually, when you tackle a regulation change like this one, it’s not something you only start thinking about six months beforehand. When I arrived in Maranello, work on the project had been on going for two years. I tried to immerse myself in its philosophy and adapt to the team as quickly as possible. Having said that, what you could call my active role in the design of the car involves working identifying the areas on which maybe we should push harder and concentrate more effort.”

As from 2014, the engine will once again play an important role in establishing a hierarchy among the teams, as was the case up until 2006. “It’s true that the influence of the power unit on overall performance of the car will be much greater than in the recent past,” continued the engineer from Lincolnshire. “From when, in 2007, the freeze on engine development took hold and performance levels converged, it’s clear that its influence on the pecking order got ever smaller, while aerodynamics grew in importance. In the years leading up to that point, that wasn’t the case: I can well remember how important the engine was in terms of Ferrari’s successes in the first half of the Noughties. Now we will witness a re-balancing, although aerodynamics will still be a key factor.”

In fact on this front, Ferrari has invested heavily in terms of manpower and technical resources, as Allison recognises. “Aerodynamics remains the lifeblood of a modern Formula 1 car,” he explains. “It’s impossible to be competitive without having the right tools and adequate resources: now we can say we have moved on from being maybe the fourth or fifth team in terms of the tools we have, to once again being at the cutting edge and everything is in place to open up a new Ferrari era.”

i really hope James is right and Ferrari DO HAVE all the tools and man power and talent to ONCE again be at the FRONT in the thick of the action..

common Ferrari, we can do it...let's show those Red Fools Drink's company what a REAL TEAM is made of!! we've been on the down low for TOO LONG NOW....NOW, more then EVER is time for us to move to the TOP!!!

i want to see our team taht thrives on success, and WIPES the floor clean with red bull, HOLDS it's head HIGH as we've done in the golden years/era (2000-2004) and last but not least show NEWEY that we dont' need him, taht we have enough man power and talent to take the fight to him....

having said that, i want us to be competitive from the start and see a BUNCH of 1-2 finishes throughout the year..

FORZA FERRARI!!!

We couldn't do it when it was all up to aerodynamics.
Now the engine is going to play a much bigger role again.
If we can't succeed on enginepower too, I'm going to be very sad.....

But that's not going to happen!:xmascool:

Hope we are not going to fly high on great PR talks before the season start, just to hit hard concrete reality when season starts.

What "great PR talks"? I haven't heard any great PR talks from our guys so far, the only one that's been doing PR talks is Merc. We are just keeping our heads down and concentrate on the most important thing, which is making a good car...quietly.

As far as performance goes, aero is still the dominant factor. The engine designs will be more restricted than ever, and add limited fuel to that, any performance difference between the engines will be minor.

The important role the engine would play is its reliability, how long they last, what their fuel consumption will be.

If we want engine to play a big role in performance, IMO we'll have to go back to unrestricted engine designs (V12, V10, take your pick, no rules to limit your choice) which will never happen.

Obviously I wasn't talking about this season, but for previous season.
"next year we are going to have a car capable of fighting straight from the first race"
Sound familiar?

Well at the start of the 2013 season we did have a car capable of fighting for the wins straight from the first race, so that was pure truth not just a "PR talk", but then in the middle of the season we faded away unfortunately, for various reasons.
The mechanics and engineers working 24/7 in Maranello will always try to make a car that would be capable of fighting for the wins straight from the first race, no doubt about it.

Oh btw, remember Macca's great PR talk before the 2013 season when Button said: "This year's car best ever made by Mclaren." ...now THAT'S what you call a "great PR talk". :rotfl

I certainly hope Macca will continue making such "best ever cars" every year as they did this year. ;-)

Oh just wait for January 2014. Then all the PR BS will really start flying.

I just really hope RBR has a similar season to what Mclaren has had this year.

Let's agree that it will be best if we keep quiet and win races and championship?! :-)

It's such a relief to hear engineers talking about the facts and the reality of the situation - and the sport - as opposedf to the gossip and misinformation we get served up from the media and even those who really should know better, all in the belief that fans have to be jollied along with a load of driver - centred fantasy and tosh.
I'm looking forward to March with calmness as well as interest after listening to JAmes Allison. (Won't last of course!).

What won't last? The calmness and interest or James Allison?
