On 23rd January 1977, the Brazilian Grand Prix, the second round of the Formula 1 World Championship, took place in Sao Paulo. After coming third in his home race two weeks earlier, the Argentinian Carlos Reutemann took the win in a 312 T2. He started from the front row, having been second fastest in qualifying, just seven hundredths off Hunt’s pole time. Reutemann went into the lead on lap 23 of 40 and kept it to the chequered flag, with a lead of almost 11 seconds over the second placed reigning world champion and his McLaren. Niki Lauda also made it to the podium, even though he started way back in thirteenth spot. The Austrian made the most of the numerous retirements, which were down to reliability problems and several off-track excursions, which were partly down to the track surface which was disintegrating in the very hot conditions. Only seven cars made it to the flag and only the first three went the full distance.

Scary thought that I was in my prime back then and got to see Lauda win in a 312T2 at Brands Hatch, makes me feel very old but still a loyal tifoso! I like these 'it happened' threads, grazie mille Rob!
