On 8th February 1932, Henry Clifford Allison was born in Brough in England. His career as a driver began relatively late, when at the age of 20, he acquired a Formula 3 Cooper-Norton. His performances in the first three years of racing attracted the attention of Colin Chapman, who chose him along with Graham Hill to debut his Lotus cars in the highest level of motor sport, in the 1958 Formula 1 World Championship. In Monaco, Allison started off with a sixth place, a result he repeated in the Netherlands at the following race, before going two better in Belgium. At the end of the season, this and other good results in Formula 2 led to him getting the call from Maranello, where the Scuderia was preparing to tackle a year with a team that had changed by necessity after the retirement of World Champion Hawthorn and the tragic deaths of Musso and Collins.

Allison took part in five Grands Prix with Ferrari in 1959, with a best result of a fifth in Monza. 1960 got off to the best possible start with a win in the Buenos Aires 1000 Kilometres, teamed with Phil Hill and a second place in the Argentinian Grand Prix. But in Monaco, a serious accident in free practice, which left with him with several fractures and in a coma for 16 days, put him out for the rest of the season.

When the British driver had recovered, Ferrari offered him the job of test driver, but he chose to try and make a comeback with Lotus. Another accident, this time in Spa, ended his racing career for good. Allison died on 7th April 2005.

Makes you wonder what some drivers would have achieved if it weren't for their accidents in or outside of F1 or even worse death. Drivers of such racing cars will always be heroes to me regardless of their achievements especially the ones of previous generations where safety was often overlooked.
