Eh..? :-??
Hardly fighting midfield, Fernando is comfortably 5th and nearest threat is Nico who has done one less stop and Kimi has had a nightmare race so far, but not his own doing, we're third fastest at the moment, not ideal, but not embarrassing, Lewis and Seb didn't even finish last race, we're still there or there abouts, it's not over yet....
Add to this that we don't even know if RBR still cheat or not..

SilverSpeed
30th March 2014, 10:31
Wait a minute how fubar is this?
Daniel has a 10 sec stop and go but doesn't do it, so after the race he get's +10sec time added.
But when he does that in the race he loses also the time travelling through the pits so he loses at least 35 sec.
IS this rule new to 2014? Stupid you can save up all your penalty's and then get them at the end of the race when you lose 60% less then when you're in a race.

Pretty good lap times if you ignore Merc but seems when Ferrari get stuck behind slower cars they just cannot get by. Power looked telling at the start when their normally great starts were not evident when out dragged by both RedBulls.
On a bright note they are closer this race using Rosberg as a reference. Last race with 30 or so laps after a safety car they were 34 seconds down but this time 19 seconds to Rosberg over a full 56 laps.

Great drive from Fernando, a job well done for Kimi as he wasn't responsible at all for that puncture the idiot Magnussen caused. The team on the other hand really needs to sort out the straightline speed issue, we have huge problems of overtaking anyone.

Without tyres giving you the grip the rest is pretty much useless, you wont be able to stay behind the front car and accelerate after the turns, you gonna get slower high speed because of tyres not working optimal. So no, having a good tyre conditions is probably the most important thing to have when you want to overtake.

He could get the power down Grieg, that's how Kimi caught Grosjean and was using DRS for the last 3 laps. Even then he couldn't overtake Grosjean. Look at Alonso vs Hulk, same problem... Caught up at blistering pace but couldn't overtake using DRS on the straight due to the PU deficit.

Looks like our PU is massively underpowered. You just have to look at the way we weren't able to overtake on the straights with the DRS on or the way we were consistently eaten alive at the exit of turn 2 to see something's wrong. Plus our tire degradation rate is higher than Merc's and Red Bull's. I think we are in for a very long year.

I agree with vcs316, tbh. We obviously lacked any kind of decent top speed. Alonso was catching the Hulk by 1.2-2.0 s/lap and the best he could do was to pull alongside him coming into T1. It was a "traction overtake", it was very obvious we are not reaching the speed we need.
And Kimi didn't exactly overtake Ericsson, Chilton and Grosjean (well, he didn't overtake him at all) with ease. Just like Australia, we couldn't overtake on the straight.
mark p
30th March 2014, 11:06
Of all this and that said about the car it appears if there is 1 major issue it's straightline speed. Same for RedBull but appears more so for Ferrari. Most cars used 90 % fuel so all carried 10 kg or at least 5kg too much fuel if you allow margin for error. I found this the most interesting thing. RedBull used more fuel than Ferrari so possible Ferrari can burn a bit more fuel to make up small gap to RedBull? Merc will take much longer to catch, probably.

So in agreeing you therefore agree with worn tyres you lose out on traction out of the corners as seen with Hulk, therefore agree that Kimi with his worn tyres could not overtake due to losing out on traction which was my point.

Speed gain mid corner under higher aero load. No advantage possible disadvantage on traction so lose out start of straight and no pu advantage on the straight so faster in clean air but cannot pass when behind a much slower car?

Worn tires mainly affect cornering abilities and traction out of slow corners, not straight line speed.
Doesn't matter how fresh the tires are, if you don't have enough power or if you are hitting the rev limiter too soon you won't get past in a straight line.
alfaromeo
30th March 2014, 11:30
Formula already watching more than 15 years only this, you're two seconds faster per lap and then on the plane with drs can not overtake (Alonso vs Hulk), this is in F1. With these engines is the 1.6-liter Formula One lost the title of Queen of motorsport. But it is painful to admit that Mercedes at the moment certainly drive more than 50 hp as Ferrari. I think that Ferrari has a serious problem with just the weight of the car, which was seen in the first half of the race with a full tank. One thing is for sure that the ferrari greatly improved in aerodynamics, but it seems to have fallen asleep in the development of motor unit.

Right, but from what I saw, it's not like Grosjean had better traction out of the last corner. Kimi had equal traction, but was losing out in sheer speed, even with the DRS open, because there's just not enough power. If tires were the issue, which was not the case because we were faster everywhere else except in the straights, we would have seen Grosjean pulling away right after turn 14 and 15.

Yes, set up his move, not execute his move. A car that is 1.5s/lap faster must be able to breeze past on straight. The fact that Alonso didn't shows that our PU is very lacking. Or maybe the 8th gear is too short or something else but there is a problem, clearly.
