On 5th April 2003, qualifying took place for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Pole position, for the first time in his home race, went to Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello, born right there in Sao Paulo. The Brazilian beat David Coulthard in the McLaren by just 11 thousandths of a second, Mark Webber in the Jaguar by 44 and Kimi Raikkonen in the other McLaren by 59.
It rained in the race and things went much less well for Rubens, who had to retire while leading because of a fuel supply problem on his F2002 . Michael Schumacher also retired, after he aquaplaned off the track. The surprise winner was Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan, but he had to wait for his trophy.
The race was stopped before the end because of two accidents involving Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso, which saw the race director hang out the red flag. It was chaos when it came to deciding the finishing order. In fact, Raikkonen was declared the winner, ahead of Fisichella, while Fernando didn’t even make it to the podium for his third place. A week later, the FIA announced there had been a mistake, as Fisichella had passed Raikkonen before the line and was therefore the real winner. On Friday in Imola, the drivers swapped trophies in an informal ceremony.
