How the heck did Alonso lose so much time in the last 20-25 laps? Was it a bad set of tyres or does the Ferrari still become unstable as the fuel burns like last year???

I think we were managing the tires and fuel. We knew we couldn't keep Rosberg behind so we protected against Ricciardo. When Alonso had to push with about 10 laps to go he picked up 0.8/lap. We had pace in the bag, just conserving the car and making sure we got it to the flag.

Well, that was definitely much better than two weeks ago! It's clear that we have made a positive step forward. Great drive by Fernando and a pretty good steady drive from Kimi as well. Considering where we were two weeks ago, this result is simply fantastic. If we can make an even bigger step forward in Spain then we could even bring the fight to the Mercs. Let's hope so. Our car certainly looked more stable and much faster throughout this weekend, so there's no doubt that we have made some significant progress. May this upcurve in form long continue!!!

Oh and btw, that girlfriend of Alonso's brings him good luck, mark my words. Every time when she's there in the pits then Alonso gets at least a podium place. So Fernando should definitely bring her along more often. ;-)

If Vettel did not hold back Ric before the second stop i am not sure if Alonso would finish 3rd... Rocky was very confident that they will fight back.... red fools were 20km slower than mercs on the straights. I still dont believe that we have the second best car in the grid considering Kimis performance.... Its all about Alonsos driving skills.

Alonso is making Kimi look like Massa. I wonder if he will finally be given credit or everyone will just make excuses again? Kimi is not comfortable which usually means being a few tenths slower than a normal driver but against Alonso that means 1 second a lap. Nice progress by the team the car seems quite decent although how much of that is Alonso doing miracles again? Just compare Kimi's pace in the Lotus when he returned to F1, with no experience with new tyres cars, he was fighting at the front, not midfield.

I believe that we do have the second best car, or at least very close to it. Kimi had some mechanical problems throughout this weekend so it's natural that he struggled quite a bit in the race.

Something is weird tho, if you check Kimi's fastest lap it was on part with Fernando's and it was much sooner with heavier load,it happen right on when he was fighting with perez.
The thing is, either he got some problems with balance issue on different stages or the lack of running on Friday and Saturday was too much for his racing setup. He only managed to run FP 2 ,while missing FP1 and doing 1 lap on FP 3 while being wet.

Im not worried tho, give it some time and Kimi will get more comfortable in general and then we will get even better results.

Better showing from Ferrari (well Alonso) but it's going to take a massive effort to overhaul Mercedes now. Well done to the team though on making a decent step forward just as they said they would in China (even though the doom and gloom members told us we would make no gains after the Bahrain test.) Hopefully Kimi can perform a little bit better as currently he is not even close to matching Alonso, who would have thought it!

In the last stint fernando was not in pushing mode in the beginning because he was nursing his tyre to get them longer ...so his best time was not relevant.Fernando is a great racer , kimi was looking like massa...but kimi needs to have a car in the right spot to compete with fernando .China is not his favorite track.Clear picture of everyone will be Barcelona .I still think we are behind redbull but with the best driver of the grid we can compete with them.
We improve a lot the engine , drivability was way better for fernando.

MArk Hughes of Autosport in the Columns "The Title fight that turned on tyre failures " has written "Essentially the car's downforce enabled it to go through fast corners at a speed that overwhelmed the 2013 tyre. If they wanted to get competitive stint lengths its drivers had to use only a fraction of its performance through the fast turns. To an extent this was true of most cars - but much more so with the RB9.
Pirelli, which was seeing the loads generated by every car, estimated in Malaysia for the second GP that on proper, all-out performance tyres capable of transferring the aero loads, the Red Bull could be winning races by a lap...".." such was the genius of Adrain Newey !!

We definitely made a step forward, although it is always difficult to judge how good - or bad - a car is with Fernando behind the wheel. The result was good, the best there was to achieve today.
What really starts to worry me though is the difference between our drivers.
Both Mercedes drivers, both RB drivers were relatively close together, but there was almost a minute between both Ferrari drivers. That's not normal and certainly not good for the WCC points.
To this moment I haven't heard of any technical problems during the race for Kimi.
I know Rosberg had no telemetry which made it difficult for him at times, but still he finished within reasonable distance of Lewis.
Now we can say it is all new to Kimi , the car , the team and so on, but the cars are new to everyone.....and the team, well he already knew the team didn't he?
Besides that, doesn't the same go for Ricciardo?
I don't know what the problem is, but it has to be solved very quickly if it's technical. If it's Kimi, he has to up his game from this moment on, because it is in no way possible that Fernando is so much faster.

Great race from Alonso. He is the man!!!! Great to see Ferrari made a good step forward!!!! Kimi needs to up his game and i'm sure he will.

Massa vs alonso at the start had my heart in my mouth Alonso super brave to keep his foot in. Sorry to say but massa was out of order. Not for going for the gap which was risky to say the least (moving five car widths across the circuit with such aggression when lots of cars fighting for space is kind of asking for trouble) but for insisting it was Alonso's fault (Alonso cast no blame on Felipe as he had not seen the replay). It is also of note that when the accident took place massa didn't keep his foot in and backed bottas into rosberg initiating a further collision. But hey its racing no hard feelings just observations.

Alonso's race craft was good, not defending against rosberg to maximise his ability to defend 3rd from ric was a good move.

I think 3 stops would of been a faster way but has to be teamed with good performance on the straights to make the strategy work think FI and williams missed a trick there.

The under-cut to get past vet was a good call think RB left RIC out too long in first stint. Vet not being able to pass Alonso and vet being out-classed by ric made was fun to watch.

Great way to start the day it nearly takes the edge off having to go into the lab today, at least I will be smiling while experimenting!!!

Happy easter everyone and Forza Ferrari :ferrarifl :pass :ferrarifl :dance

Watching the replay I would say Massa kept his line nicely. They touched because Alonso moved to the inside, it has nothing to do with Massa previously repositioning himself because the car in front closed the door. It is very clear from the onboard footage of Rosberg's car.

I have seen lots of footage. It is a right hand corner taken at much lower speed than on normal lap. Alonso was always going to move right as its the racing line so massa should of been aware and not positioned himself in the middle of two cars. Like I said in my post I have no problem with massa's move he went for a gap although risky. I just didn't like the blame game he played. It was the pit-stop (due to tyers being wrong i.e. left hand tyer on the right and vice versa) that cost him not the 1st corner.

Vettel being shown up for the here by Ricciardo. The longer this continues the more Alonso is proven right regarding Vettel's over reliance on a fast car.

Didn't turn in just took up the racing line (taking a shallow diagonal to the appex) following vet in front and covering Ric. Massa put him self in Alonso's blind spot and left himself no room to move. Like I said he could of been more aware. Also I don't see why you are arguing with me about this: I say again I did not have a problem with massa going for a risky gap but rather the blame game. Great bounce back from Ferrari!Congrats to all the guys from Maranello to the Pit crews and a very nice welcome for Marco and a nice send off for Stefano!I was crossing my fingers that maybe with some stroke of good luck for us, Rosber's Merc would encounter some issues due to absence of telemetry etc and in effect would give Nando 2nd place...but 3rd is very much a welcome considering where were at in the previous race.

I love Vettel's reaction when a Caterham (was it Ericcson?) overtook him, it's as if he was very surprised though his race engineer advised him that the Caterham (lapped car I guess) is on fresher tires and come 2 to 3 laps it'll all be worn out:lol. Ricciardo is now the "Alpha Bull" performance wise, he's making Vettel look like an ordinary racer:-D.

I agree, but looks as if Massa had a different idea about whom to blame. Yes of course.......you feel a bang and the first thing you think: someone hit me! (you never think: I hit someone when you are a racingdriver :lol )

Yeah, Lewis wasn't hallucinating. I thought at first he was joking, but the announcers saw it as well.

Funny, I have seen some Red Bull fans claim it robbed Ricciardio of the position. They could still be running and he wasn't getting past Alonso.

Looks to me like Ric and Alonso raced till lap 56 anyway so it wouldn't have made any difference. Wonder what they saw that suggest the drivers wasn't racing anymore, lol

Podium..Glad for that...Still cant see why we cannot get 2 cars running at the same level, but thats the way it is right now.
We def needed a good showing. Good job by the team, lets move it up another notch.

The racing line is on the left side of the track near the 50m board and doesn't even apply at the start.

The right side is the racing (preferred) line off the start because the speed is a lot lower than a normal lap. Going deep into turn one and going the long way round i.e. the left side means being hung out to dry. Don't pretend to not understand.

There are a lot of complaints about this years F1 by fans, but we must not forget the one thing that has improved the sport very much:
we don't see The Finger anymore.........:nana

Yeah now we get to see "The Haircut". :-)

Great gains shown by the team; cautiously optimistic about the European leg but very hopeful we can sustain the improvement. Improvement in traction and downforce should be good for Catalunya but tyre performance--as usual--is the wildcard.

One of the most satisfying things is hearing 'Sebastian let Daniel overtake' messages. Great stuff. So much for the best driver ever. Bit ridiculous really, but he never was dominant over a teammate till the exhaust blowing gizmo was un and running. Remember him asking for a new chassis after he was flogged by webbo in Monaco 2010. No disrespect to Dan, but he hasn't been toweling up his previous teammates. If he can do this then what would Alonso or Hamilton be doing to him.

Nice shot Nando, little "shocker" for the cameraman, love those behind the scenes glimpses!
EDIT: Just noticed it was on live broadcast as well, no chance for anyone to edit it out! :haha:

Nice job & good work by the whole team, I just want to say thank you as well to Stefano Domenicalli since initiatives started under his direction were likely what gave the gains we saw today (just a little sad to see him go I guess! :-s ).

Anyhow a great drive by Alonso & still some work to do to get Kimi on pace, but that will come soon, can't believe reporter's are even questioning his lack of "motivation" as the cause for finishing behind Alonso, ridiculous! A statistic some may have missed... Fernando improved 2 places over his grid position & Kimi improved 3 places over his grid position, so I am happy with both of our driver's performances!

I think Ferrari will be making steady gains, the only question is how much & how those gains compare to the other teams.

The race has brightened my outlook for the rest of this season & I hope Marco adds an improved focus & does everything he can to better the chances for the team to succeed.

Doesnt he always! lol..

In all fairness, he was just trying a brave move and it didnt pan out. The likes of FA, SV, LH dont scare easily and he got the short end of the stick. Happens in racing!
