Can't find anything yet, but Buxton just retweeted it. JRM Racing announces Stepney was killed in a car accident.

RIP

Where do you get that from?

I hate to hear this, despite what he did. He was an integral part of Schumi's run.

RIP Nigel.

The circumstances point to it potentially being suicide.

He got out of his car and stepped into the middle of the road straight into an on-coming semi. Not generally something that happens accidentally.

Ah, ok, the way I read the story I thought he had pulled out in front of the truck in his car.

Sad to think that his career with Ferrari ended under such a cloud, hope that this didn't contribute to his untimely death by causing recurring thoughts of disloyalty. And to think that he and Michael must have both been fighting their own battles at the same time. RIP Nigel.:-s

This is a very difficult thread to comment on, you are totally correct wisepie Nigel did leave Ferrari under a cloud, never the less this is a very sad situation, R.I.P Nigel.

Well there's no denying that what he did in 2007 was really nasty and dirty, and I don't know if I can ever fully forgive him for that, but certainly nobody would've wanted him to end up like this. Tragic.

R.I.P - NS and my deepest condolences to his family.

He will be remembered for what he should not have done, not the great work he achieved prior to then. RIP

Understandably, most people may not have heard of him until Spygate happened. However for us Ferrari fans who knew who he was, I hope we'll remember him for his contributions to the team. The info we lost was probably useful for only a couple of years (and he had faced the consequence of his mistake), but the Schumi-era achievement he contributed to is something that is permanent in Ferrari's history.

Very sad news .... and very mysterious it seems to what is known so far ... not much to read about it here in Austria ... noticed first here ...

I don't know... that may have been true a few years ago, but there are other guilty parties associated with spygate that have been forgiven, when I think of Stepney my first thought is always when he was on the refuelling rig and Schumi left the pits taking Stepney with him, think it was 2000 but can't remember where, really hope history will remember him for the years of great work he did at Maranello, and not the momentary brain holiday he had...
Yeah he made a mistake, but ultimately I still think of him as one of the good guys...

Agree with Tobes, our no1 driver seems to be forgiven for his part in it :-)

I am thinking it was at Barcelona with the fuel rig.

Yes, you're quite right, all of us Tifosi should try to remember him for all the good things he did for Ferrari prior to 2007, but it's really hard to ignore that awful "Spygate" saga. In my opinion there's just no excuse for what he did, and I'm not only talking about "Spygate"...as I remember there were also rumors about him sabotaging our cars with some sort of white powder that he poured into the fuel tanks. :-?? What he did was completely inexcusable and it was NO "mistake", it was a conscious and deliberate act, unless of course he was under the influence of some substance at the time and didn't know what he was doing, which I doubt. He himself chose to go down this cheating path and ruin his good name in the process. Even though he's dead now and I'm aware of his contributions to our success in 1999-2004, I still will probably never be able to fully forgive him for what he did. But, I certainly hope he can find peace in the afterlife.

I don't think it's any of our places to forgive anything, to be honest. Nor is it anyone's place to suggest he was under the influence. His family have a lost a loved one and that is more important that the fact he may have done something against a sports team we all happen to support -not that anyone will probably ever know the full story or who did what in 2007.

In the grand scheme of things what does it matter. Do you think his loved ones care whether some Ferrari fans on the internet will ever forgive him? Very much doubt it.
