Renault reckons it is just 10 per cent away from a full recovery after its challenging start to the season.
The French manufacturer has made steady gains since its performance and reliability issues in pre-season testing, with Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel finishing as best of the rest in Spain.
Although the brand still trails, Renault Head of Track Operations Rémi Taffin is pleased with its position.
"Overall we've made good progress with energy and fuel management here, and the driveability of the Power Unit has been improved," commented Taffin, reflecting on the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
"I'd say we are about 90 per cent of the way on our recovery now, with final refinements to come. We'll test these [at the post-race gathering] and are confident we'll introduce another step forward for Monaco."
Taffin added that claiming the final podium spot is the best Renault can hope for at the moment.
"A podium for Daniel and a strong fourth for Sebastian are as much as we could have hoped for here. The Mercedes have a very good package and are out in front, but there is very little between the next four teams.
"This shows that the engine race is a lot closer than at previous races and there is everything to play for."
