View Full Version : Alonso frustrated by lack of support from 'closest friends' in F1

Fernando Alonso has expressed frustration about a lack of praise from those who should be supporting him in Formula 1.
Earlier this week, Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche hailed Alonso as perhaps the top driver in F1.
He told Spanish media: "Alonso is probably the best driver on the Formula 1 grid. Fernando has always proven it - and in uncompetitive cars."
That admiration comes just a few weeks after Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said Alonso was a 'monster' in races.
Speaking ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix about the latest comments from Mercedes, Alonso said he welcomed such talk, but said it was weird that others who should also be backing him did not do so.
"It's always welcome when people see your job in a good way, and respect what you try to achieve," he said.
"It's sometimes strange to see good comments and compliments from people from outside, and the opposite from people who are supposed to be close to you.
"It's motivating for me and good to see good comments, and funny when you see the opposite in your closest friends."
Although some have viewed Alonso's cryptic remarks as an attack on his own team, it is understood he was referring to criticisms he has faced in sections of the media about his performances at Ferrari.

Don't see where he's referring to the team?
The article even mentioned that he was referring to the media who have been critical of him.

His performances at Ferrari have been stellar in a second/thirds best car on the grid.

The italian media has been really unkind to him in recent years, but you really can't expect anything from the media. And he says "It's motivating for me and good to see good comments, and funny when you see the opposite in your closest friends." It's either his very personal peers or the team. My bet is that he is referring to the team.

It's a translation from Spanish, you can't take every word on a literal level.

It looks like is aimed to Italian Media, it seems that Autosprint had another explosive article "pro-Kimi, anti-Alonso" early this week.

It's hard to read into what he is hinting at. Maybe he thinks LDM is favouring Kimi ;-)

... how great it would be if we would have a car that might fight for win ... instead of Alonso might do this, Alonso said that and we think he means it this way ...
Fact: Mercedes has two (prime) cars on the grid
Fact: Mercedes has two drivers for their two (prime) cars on the grid
Fact: Both performing quiet well with no big difference between them as double podium is standard
Fact: if you have a car like that you don't need a driver like Alonso ... for which reason? RedBull managed to get 4times champion with Vettel ...
And as long as Mercedes isn't dropping one of his top drivers (by which reason? also super mega PR disaster) Alonso isn't doing anything at Merc ... maybe buying one for his girlfriend ...
P.S: maybe go on facebook and write him: I support you ... #ForzaFerrari #Vamos #ForzaFernando

Alonso doesn't need to think that way. He is outperforming Raikkonen.

Montezemolo: Alonso ‘the best driver in the world’ :-D
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has praised Fernando Alonso as “the best driver in the world” following some cryptic comments from his driver.
Alonso was asked during a media session on Wednesday about comments from Mercedes chairman Dieter Zetsche which praised him, and responded with some strange words about a lack of support.
“It's always welcome when people see your job in a good way and respect what you try to do and what you try to achieve,” Alonso said. “It's sometimes strange to see good comments and compliments from people from outside, and from the other side that are supposed to be close to you there are the opposite comments.
“So that's motivating. That's motivating for me and it's good to receive good comments, but it's funny when you see the opposite in your closest friends.”
Following those comments, a Ferrari press release on Thursday morning carried quotes from Montezemolo praising Alonso's talents.
“Fernando is the best driver in the world, who always gives 200% in the races,” Montezemolo said. “He knows how much I count on him, even away from the race track, in terms of his contribution and the impetus he gives to the team. I think it's incredible that there are still some so-called experts who don't understand that and are always looking for a polemical situation that simply doesn't exist”.
With Alonso also having said on Wednesday that he has yet to see any changes made by new team-principal Marco Mattiacci, Montezemolo said his influence will be felt in time.
“The truth is that he and Kimi [Raikkonen], another incredible driver, need a competitive Ferrari and giving them that is our sole objective. We are working very hard, starting with Marco Mattiacci, who knows what needs to be done and who will instigate many changes at a technical and organizational level and in speeding up the decision-making process. That's what I want, as do our drivers and our fans, while all the rest is just idle chat”.

If he wants to leave, LEAVE !!!
Sorry guys, but I'm really tired of his insinuations at every GP.
If you are so unhappy at FERRARI, go to Red Bull or McLaren !!!

Don't be so dramatic. I don't remember any insinuation in every GP that he wants to leave, in fact I don't remember him saying that he wants to leave. This is aimed to the press, even Autosport agree with that and they are far from fans of Fernando.

Sounds to me like Luca DM is referring to the press too, and my guess would be the Italian press. As we know, some "journalist" have gone as far as to claim the team is against Kimi, which could be seen as downplaying Alonso's achievement within the team. That's how low they have gotten.

To be fair, it's really not Alonso who keeps making these insinuations, it's the media.

Happens all the time that a driver gets flamed for something the press made up. Fernando is no exception.

You registered just to say this?
Do you know who Alonso is anyway? He is the guy who thinks a championship with Ferrari is a higher level than just another WDC, he is the guy who always goes on and on and on, no matter what the car is like, he is the guy who has always maintained that Ferrari is his home till he retires.
Yes, he has expressed his frustrations sometimes about the fact that the car isn't what he wished for, but he has always referred to himself and the team as "we".
So think and read before yoy post.

Spot on. How much back licking does Alonso want? Talk about ego.
He needs his head examining if he thinks he's bigger than Ferrari.
Drivers come and go. Ferrari will win another title it doesn't
matter who the drivers will be.

I'm fed up with this kind of media-inspired story appearing again to keep the chins wagging and the critics making outspoken remarks just to gather headlines. I'll believe what I want to believe and try to ignore the stories that emerge with no foundation or taken out of context. We do have the best driver, full stop, he just needs the best car too.

The quote is obviously directed at the team, not the press. To say so is far fetched. How
can the media be described as people close to him?
Alonso expects Ferrari to lick his backside and beg
him to stay like he's divinity.
At every single race he takes the opportunity to take
a dig at the team and whenever something good happens
its always down to him. If he wants to go, then so be
it.

So you believe the part of an article that claims Alonso said something, but you chose not to believe the other part of the same article that claims it was directed towards the media?
That quote was translated from Spanish, and I doubt you understand the language or even know what expression they use in Spanish language. And all of this assuming that the article was even accurate.
The claim that Alonso took a dig at the team at every race is also false, unless you have evidence to back that up?
Seems like Alonso haters just come out of the woods whenever the media report something relating to him.
